Woodridge boys basketball outlasts Tallmadge in wild opener

For Tallmadge boys basketball, it was the start of new era. For Woodridge, it was about showing their experience could overcome a lack of height.

Saturday at the Joe Siegfurth Basketball Classic, both teams showed they can be successful this season.

Tallmadge nearly rallied twice from double-digit deficits, but Woodridge held its nerve down the stretch to win 69-66 at Akron Firestone High School. The game was the season opener from both squads.

Woodridge got nine or more points from five different players, as Bulldogs coach Ric Blevins was generally happy with his team.

Ellet’s high-octane offense spoils Tallmadge boys basketball’s home opener

It has a tendency to make them more vulnerable on defense.

It can lead to a number of balls heading toward the spectators or worse yet, in their opponents’ hands.

But first-year Tallmadge head boys basketball coach Bill Johnson isn’t going to apologize for the way his players perform their duties on various 50-foot courts.

Whether their critics like it or not, the Blue Devils will play at three speeds this winter.

Fast, faster and fastest.

Good team win and good bounce back game. Coach did an excellent job of working all the bench players into this game for extended minutes. Better get ready though....schedule is about to get real.

Tallmadge 64
Copley 63

Huge Suburban League win. It’s been awhile since Tallmadge beat Copley in basketball. Great win, but disappointing that it came down to the final play. Tallmadge was running Copley out of the gym, up 24 with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd. From there, things unraveled quickly. Copley actually took the lead late in the 4th before Nick Hussing was fouled attempting the game winner. With the score 63-63 with 1.1 seconds showing on the clock, Hussing sunk the 2nd of 2 free throws to seal the win. I believe Tallmadge is alone atop the SLA at 3-0.

Berlin Hiland 68
Tallmadge 58

Tallmadge 3-5 (3-0) tried to overcome one of the worst officiated games I’ve ever witnessed, but in the end it was just too much to overcome. Game was tied at half, and Tallmadge led heading into 4th quarter. Then the refs imposed their will. Turned a great game into a laugher. Hussing had 18, Heigelmann 16 and Seeker 10. Not taking anything away from Berlin Hiland, as they were a very good, disciplined team, but another game that got away.

Much needed win. This team has talent and could make a big run at the end of the season. Need to keep the confidence and build after each game.

Revere was on fire in the 1st and 3rd. Tallmadge really struggled in both those periods, especially the 1st. Thought Revere had the best defensive effort I had seen this season against the Devils.
