Keeping Up with Comets at Dayton 2010

Here's a single thread to keep up with the three former Comets who ply their football skills in the NCAA Div.1 FCS Pioneer Football League for the University of Dayton. I'll post any news about them here and invite fans and parents to add on.

If history continues, Jake Voigt will probably be red-shirted and not play or travel with the team. His importance will be each week at practice on the Scout Team and we look forward to hearing about his success in preparing the older players for the upcoming opponent.

Joe Janasek will see more time this year, continuing his work on special teams and more series at LB.

Steve Valentino will be able to play QB for a second year in a row, something he never did before. Ten offensive starters return. More than half are 5th year players who banded together for their one last chance at football in their life. With his buddies running routes again, maybe Steve can be the first player in league history to be 1st team All-PFL three times and at two different positions.

The first post on this thread should appropriately show Phil Steele's Preseason PFL 1st Team picks. Six are Flyers.

No matter, the medics want me at my high school weight, 155 lbs. They put me on a diet. Just get me my Vernor's and I'm fine. Go Flyers! And Steve, Joe, and Jake. :crush:

Tino on Payton Watch List

Dayton's QB joins ten other QB's on the updated Walter Payton Watch List for the top FCS football honor.

This is a nice achievement for Steve Valentino to be named and we wish him the best in the 2010 campaign. The non-scholarship group in the FCS is always fighting for recognition, so the bigger football powers may have fans that have trouble accepting this choice, but it does show that somebody is watching!!!

Wowee! Nice picture, fine write-up about Steve, great honor. I don't believe for one minute Steve could play left tackle. But he would probably prove me wrong, he will be a coach on and off the field this season though. Along with more nationwide honors. Thanks Gramps.

Buchanen Award Watchlist

This is not about a former Comet, but it speaks volumes about what is going on with University of Dayton football.

A defensive player, James J. Vercammen, who plays the "Flyer" position which is like a strong safety at times and linebacker at times, was named to the FCS "Buck" Buchanen Award watchlist. Never has a Flyer been named to this defensive award list. Never had a Flyer been named to the Walter Payton watchlist until Steve Valentino. The fans are are going crazy about just being mentioned along with all those larger FCS football programs. What a recruiting year 2006 turned out to be! Nearly incredible!

J.J.Vercammen, #38, is a 5th year senior from Bloomfield Hills, MI. For sure Comets going down to Dayton are amongst some pretty good athletes. Read some of his stats on this link:

Checking numbers...

Uniform numbers for 2010 Flyers:

Steve Valentino #7
Joe Janasek #20
Jake Voigt #9

Newly named recruits also come from St.Ignatius (Pat Dowd, DT), St.Edwards (Brian Horansky, TE), Walsh Jesuit (Matt Bennett-P/K), West Geauga (Andy Powers, WR) & North Royalton (Clay Craft, LB) in addition to Hudson (Tim Pallay, OG).

Miami Hurricanes just signed home & home with Univ. of Toledo. Should have been with the Univ. of Dayton. The Flyers are flying high.

FLYER FOOTBALL PRESEASON CAMP OPENS AUGUST 9

08/05/2010 11:41 AM

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton head coach Rick Chamberlin and his staff will welcome 110 players back to campus Monday, August 9 as the Flyers prepare for the 2010 football season. Chamberlin is back for his third season as UD’s head coach and returns 15 starters (10 offense, three defense, two specialists), from the team that went 9-2 and won a share of the 2009 Pioneer Football League title.

Among the returnees are defensive back James Vercammen and quarterback Steve Valentino. Vercammen, who plays the hybrid safety/linebacker position known as “Flyer”, is a preseason All-American and a member of the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. Valentino is one of 20 players on the Walter Payton Award Watch List.

The Buchanan Award goes to the top defensive player in FCS football, while the Payton Award goes to the top player. Both honors are awarded by The Sports Network. This is the first time in program history a UD player appears on either watch list.

Vercammen was third in FCS football last season in tackles with a PFL record 134. Valentino was the 2009 Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year and is the only player in league history to be named First Team All-PFL at two different positions (WR in 2008, QB in 2009).
Chamberlin has guided UD to nine wins in his first two seasons, going 9-3 in 2008 and 9-2 last year.

The Flyers will be led by captains Tyler Friedrich, Joe Reis and Valentino. All three are redshirt seniors, members of two PFL championship teams in their careers and were named First Team All-PFL in 2009.
Friedrich is an offensive guard from Dublin, Ohio. A versatile player who has also played tight end and tackle in his career, Friedrich started all 11 games last season. Ries is a linebacker from Cincinnati. As a junior, he was second on the team in tackles (70), and led in interceptions (3) and fumbles forced (2). Valentino is just the fourth two-time captain in school history. The Solon, Ohio native moved from wideout to quarterback after the season opener, and led the Flyers to their 10th PFL title in 15 years.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Flyers are continuing “Tuesday Night Lights”, the free program where pee wee football teams take the field for a practice with the University of Dayton football players. For nine Tuesdays in September and October, teams that sign up in advance will get a pre practice talk from Chamberlin, take the field to warm up with the UD football team, and then observe practice until their evening is over at 8:15 p.m.

Dayton will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 4 at home against Robert Morris. Game time will be 1:00 p.m. ET. The Flyers’ PFL opener will be Saturday, Sept. 18 at home against Morehead State. Other Pioneer Football League teams visiting Welcome Stadium in 2010 are Valparaiso (Oct. 2), Campbell (Oct. 23) and Drake (Nov. 6). Dayton will also play a rare Saturday night home game when Central State visits Welcome Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 25 for a 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
After reporting, attending meetings, getting their equipment and undergoing physicals Monday, the team will undergo fitness tests Tuesday morning. First practice for the 2010 Flyers will be Tuesday afternoon, August 10, at 2:30 p.m. Practices will be conducted at Welcome Stadium and the Jerry Von Mohr practice field adjacent to Welcome Stadium.

The Flyers will hold their first preseason scrimmage Saturday, August 21 at 6:45 p.m. ET as part of the University’s New Student Orientation Program.

Good News Worth Repeating...The Flyers enter the season with the second best winning percentage (.791, 87-23) in FCS football since 2000 AND have produced the most football Academic All-Americans (19) at any level of competition in the same time frame.
Stay Tuned...The annual PFL coaches’ poll will be announced on Monday, August 9.

All-PFL Performers Return...Dayton returns five 2009 First Team All-PFL performers – OG Tyler Friedrich, LB Joe Ries, QB Steve Valentino, F James Vercammen and DE Brandon Wingeier. In addition, UD also returns WR Justin Watkins (second team) and C Justin Griffis (honorable mention).
Tino Tales...Senior quarterback Steve Valentino is the first Dayton player to be named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. The Payton Award goes to the player of the year in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision and is presented by the Sports Network. A First Team All-PFL wide receiver in 2008, he became Dayton's starting quarterback in the 2009 season's second week due to injuries. He promptly led the Flyers to seven consecutive victories and finished the regular season with a league-best 281.6 yards total offense and led all quarterbacks in rushing, averaging 65.6 yards per game to rank fourth among the league's rushers. Valentino also ranked second among the league's quarterbacks in passing yardage (216.0 ypg) and pass efficiency rating (139.8). He completed 170 of 286 passes (.590). Just the fourth Flyer to be a two-time football captain, he is the first position player in PFL history to be named first-team all-league at two different positions.

All-Americammen...Senior James Vercammen was named to the Sports Network’s Preseason All-America First Team in July. Playing the hybrid safety/linebacker position know as “Flyer,” he is the only player from the PFL on the first team and one of four from the league on any of the Sports Network preseason teams. Vercammen is also the only player from the PFL who has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The Buchanan Award is given to FCS football’s best defensive player. Vercammen is the first UD player to be named to the Buchanan Watch List. As a redshirt junior, Vercammen’s 134 tackles set a new single-season record in the PFL and was third in the FCS. His season earned him a spot on the Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision All-American Second Team and All-PFL First Team. He posted eight games of double-digit tackles, including a 19-tackle, 1.5 tackle for loss and one pass breakup game against conference foe San Diego.

Quality Vs. Quantity...Dayton only returns three starters from last year’s defense that led the PFL in scoring defense (13.6) and total defense (242.5), but they were the three most productive Dayton players on that side of the ball. Flyer James Vercammen led the PFL and was third in the nation in tackles (134). Linebacker Joe Ries was second on the team in tackles (70), and led in interceptions (3) and fumbles forced (2). Defensive end Brandon Wingeier led the team in sacks (6.5) and fumbles recovered (2).
Speaking Of Wingeier...Brandon Wingeier is a two-time ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American. A mechanical engineering major, he has started 23 straight games for the Flyers. Last year he led UD in sacks (6.5). He also had 39 tackles, 11.5 hits in the backfield, two fumbles recovered, two QB hurries, a fumble forced, a pass batted down and an interception he returned 57 yards for a touchdown.
Quality And Quantity...UD returns 10 of 11 starters on offense (and that does not include center Blake Saul who started all 12 games in 2008 and was limited with a back injury in 2009). Every player who scored is back, as are 13 of the players who caught a pass, and the team’s top four rushers.
The Good Hands People...Last season’s top receiver, Justin Watkins, returns after finishing second in the PFL in receiving yardage per game (84.3) and first in yards per catch. Watkins led UD in receptions (47) TD catches (7) and was second in yards per catch (19.7). Five returnees caught at least 10 passes in 2009 – Nick Collins (27 for 358 yards), Justin Millio (22 for 203), Anthony Papp (19 for 213) and Luke Bellman (14 for 279). Although he was banged up last year, two seasons ago Millio caught a UD single-season record 67 passes. Bellman led the Flyers in yards per catch (19.9), and would have led the PFL if he had enough receptions to qualify.

Can't go wrong when a UD student/athlete

The three Solon footballers who are on the Dayton campus know about the new (improved) Academic Center for the athletes. This is for Comets still in high school, their parents and those interested in education of athletes. How do UD athletes carry a combined 3.227 grade point average? How are 56 football players earning 3-point averages?

The center for athletics is the Frericks Center, on campus, not at the gym or stadium. The second floor houses the Anthony A. Riggs Academic Center. The kids don't have far to go for help. here's the link:
http://www.daytonflyers.com/mens/football/news/index.html?article_id=6818

The Solon schools' website has a writeup on the former Comets now in the UD football program. There's a photo of Steve Valentino, Joe Janasek and Jake Voigt. Standing with them is former Comet RB/LB Kevin McCoy (class of '03), who is now a Flyer assistant coach. Everybody is all smiles.

It's a really nice photo but there's something about those red-and white uniforms that make me uneasy. They look too much like Mentor Cardinals' gear. :(

Oh, well.

Pregame for Game 1...Robert Morris

daytonflyers.com: News
DAYTON OPENS 2010 SEASON AT HOME
VS. NEC FOE ROBERT MORRIS

The 103rd season of University of Dayton football begins Saturday when the
Flyers host Robert Morris. Game time at Welcome Stadium is 1:00 p.m. ET.
Rick Chamberlin is back for his third season as UD’s head coach and returns 15
starters (10 offense, three defense, two specialists), from the team that went 9-2
and won a share of the 2009 Pioneer Football League title.
Among the returnees are defensive back James Vercammen and quarterback
Steve Valentino. Vercammen, who plays the hybrid safety/linebacker position
known as “Flyer”, is a preseason All-American and a member of the Buck
Buchanan Award Watch List. Valentino is one of 20 players on the Walter
Payton Award Watch List. This is the first time in program history a UD player appears
on either watch list.
Vercammen was third in FCS football last season in tackles with a PFL record
134. Valentino was the 2009 Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the
Year and is the only player in league history to be named First Team All-PFL
at two different positions (WR in 2008, QB in 2009)..

ALL CAPTAINS ALL PFL
The Flyers will be led by captains Tyler Friedrich, Joe Reis and Steve
Valentino. All three are redshirt seniors, members of two PFL championship
teams in their careers and were named First Team All-PFL in 2009. Friedrich
is an offensive guard from Dublin, Ohio. A versatile player who has also
played tight end and tackle in his career, Friedrich started all 11 games last
season. Ries is a linebacker from Cincinnati. As a junior, he was second on
the team in tackles (70), and led in interceptions (3) and fumbles forced (2).
Valentino is just the fourth two-time captain in school history. The Solon,
Ohio native moved from wideout to quarterback after the season opener, and
led the Flyers to their 10th PFL title in 15 years.

SERIES STUFF
Dayton leads the series with Robert Morris 10-2, and has won the last seven
meetings. Last year’s 21-14 win on Joe Walton Field was the starting debut of
Steve Valentino. Injuries in the season opener decimated what was left of the
Flyer QB corps, forcing Valentino to start at quarterback. His day began on a
sour note, when his third pass of the day was batted into the air at the line of
scrimmage and intercepted deep in RMU territory. But his day ended with a
critical third-and-10 run around left end for a first down that clinched UD’s 21-
14 win.
THE EYES OF THE NATION
The Flyer football program received more national attention this summer than
perhaps ever, when quarterback Steve Valentino and Flyer James Vercammen
were named to the Walter Payton Award and Buck Buchanan Award Watch
Lists. UD is also receiving votes (as is Robert Morris) in the 2010 Sports
Network/Fathead.com FCS poll.

GOOD NEWS WORTH REPEATING
The Flyers enter the season with the second best winning percentage (.791, 87-
23) in FCS football since 2000 AND have produced the most football
Academic All-Americans (19) at any level of competition in the decade.

TINO TALES
Senior quarterback Steve Valentino is the first Dayton player to be named to
the Walter Payton Award Watch List. The Payton Award goes to the player of
the year in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision and is presented
by the Sports Network. A First Team All-PFL wide receiver in 2008, he
became Dayton’s starting quarterback in the 2009 season’s second week due to
injuries. He promptly led the Flyers to seven consecutive victories and finished
the regular season with a league-best 281.6 yards total offense and led all
quarterbacks in rushing, averaging 65.6 yards per game to rank fourth among
the league’s rushers. Valentino also ranked second among the league’s
quarterbacks in passing yardage (216.0 ypg) and pass efficiency rating (139.8).
He completed 170 of 286 passes (.590). Just the fourth Flyer to be a two-time
football captain, he is the first position player in PFL history to be named firstteam
all-league at two different positions.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND
An interesting fact about reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year Steve
Valentino returning to quarterback for the Flyers in 2010is this is the first time
since he has began organized football that he is a starting quarterback two years
in a row. He started at quarterback as a senior at Solon High School, and then
redshirted and was a third-string QB in his first two years at UD. He moved to
receiver in 2008, and then came to the rescue and returned to QB last year.

STILL AT QB, STILL A CAPTAIN, BUT...
There are a lot of attributes attached to Steve Valentino (captain, Payton
candidate, PFL Player of the Year, etc.) but he no longer holds the title of
“Fastest Player on the Team.” That honor now goes to freshman cornerback
Gary Hunter, who ran a 4.32 in the preseason. Valentino runs a 4.44.

ALL-AMERICAMMEN
Senior James Vercammen was named to the Sports Network’s Preseason All-
America First Team in July. Playing the hybrid safety/linebacker position
know as “Flyer,” he is the only player from the PFL on the first team and one
of four from the league on any of the Sports Network preseason teams.
Vercammen is also the only player from the PFL who has been named to the
Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The Buchanan Award is given to FCS
football’s best defensive player. Vercammen is the first UD player to be named
to the Buchanan Watch List. As a redshirt junior, Vercammen’s 134 tackles set
a new single-season record in the PFL and was third in the FCS. His season
earned him a spot on the Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision
All-American Second Team and All-PFL First Team. He posted eight games of
double-digit tackles, including a 19-tackle, 1.5 tackle for loss and one pass
breakup game against conference foe San Diego.

QUALITY VS. QUANTITY
Dayton only returns three starters from last year’s defense that led the PFL in
scoring defense (13.6) and total defense (242.5), but they were the three most
productive Dayton players on that side of the ball. Flyer James Vercammen led
the PFL and was third in the nation in tackles (134). Linebacker Joe Ries was
second on the team in tackles (70), and led in interceptions (3) and fumbles
forced (2). Defensive end Brandon Wingeier led the team in sacks (6.5) and
fumbles recovered (2).

SPEAKING OF WINGEIER
Brandon Wingeier is a two-time ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic
All-American. A mechanical engineering major, he has started 23 straight
games for the Flyers. Last year he led UD in sacks (6.5). He also had 39
tackles, 11.5 hits in the backfield, two fumbles recovered, two QB hurries, a
fumble forced, a pass batted down and an interception he returned 57 yards for
a touchdown.

QUALITY & QUANTITY
UD returns 10 of 11 starters on offense (and that does not include center Blake
Saul who started all 12 games in 2008 and was limited with a back injury in
2009). Every player who scored is back, as are 13 of the players who caught a
pass, and the team’s top four rushers.

THE GOOD HANDS PEOPLE
Last season’s top receiver, Justin Watkins, returns after finishing second in the
PFL in receiving yardage per game (84.3) and first in yards per catch (19.7).
Watkins also led UD in receptions (47) and TD catches (7). Five returnees had
at least 10 passes in 2009 – Nick Collins (27 for 358 yards), Justin Millio (22
for 203), Anthony Papp (19 for 213) and Luke Bellman (14 for 279). Although
he was hurt last year, Millio caught a UD single-season record 67 passes in
2008.

DAYTON D
Last season, UD led FCS football in pass efficiency defense (96.71) and was
second in pass defense yardage (140.1), third in total defense (242.6.10), first in
(128.20) and fifth in scoring defense (13.6). UD also led the PFL in first downs
allowed (11.8), opponent third down conversions (25.2%), lowest penalty
yardage assessed (36.9) and time of possession (33:13 per game).

HALFTIME ADJUSTMENT
The Flyers outscored their opponents 89-16 in the third quarter last year.

Team travels to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne next week

Dayton wins opener

Valentino leads Dayton over Robert Morris 28-14

The Associated Press 4:40 PM Saturday, September 4, 2010
DAYTON, Ohio. — Steve Valentino passed for two second-quarter touchdowns and had 317 total yards to lead Dayton over Robert Morris 28-14 in both teams' opener on Saturday.
Valentino hit Justin Watkins for a 24-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-10, giving the Flyers of the Pioneer League a 14-0 lead with 8:26 left in the first half. The play, which followed a timeout, capped a 94-yard, 13-play drive.
After holding the Colonials of the Northeast Conference to a three-and-out, Dayton scored again as Valentino connected with Nick Collins for a 4-yard TD.
Valentino rushed for 106 yards and was 19-for-37 passing for 211 yards and two interceptions for the Flyers, who held possession for 37 minutes.
Watkins made eight catches for 95 yards.
Robert Morris quarterback Jeff Sinclair was 14-for-29 for 146 yards, including a 33-yard third-quarter score to Anthony Coleman.

Another great game for Tino and the Flyers. Question: did the Flyers play Jacksonville St. at all in Steve's years at Dayton? They were amazing today vs. Ole Miss. Congratulations as always to Steve, the Flyers, and the Grandpa's.

Dayton loses shootout 31-35

We're still unwinding after a day in Pittsburgh and a day at Mountaineer Park sandwiched between two days of driving. It was a great time, our first ride since December, but all the walking at the game strained a calf muscle so I spent Sunday night watching MNF instead of at the horse track!

It looked like Steve pulled a win out of the bag with an 11 play, 80 yard, 4:35 drive and 26 yard TD pass with 1:24 to play. But Duquesne's Patterson pulled another TD pass out of the bag in 8 plays, 66 yards and a trick play where the rollout side tight end goes down on one knee and after his defender gives up, he drifts the opposite direction and is WIDE OPEN for a short lob and trot into the end zone with 20 seconds remaining! It was a play they saw Dayton pull on Albany in the Gridiron Bowl three years ago.

It was a hot, hard fought battle with both teams leaving it on the field. UD has had trouble beating the Dukes at Rooney field. Valentino's 248 yards passing have moved him into 10th place in Flyer Passing Yardage and combined with running and receiving, 5th place in Total Offense. Here's the schools writeup:
http://www.daytonflyers.com/mens/football/news/index.html?article_id=6926

Hang on for 34-28 Win

Dayton hung on again but this time they had enough points to win against Morehead State. These close games have prevented some younger players from getting PT although I think that Jake Voigt will be reshirted anyway. Joe Janasek nursed rib problems early and has not seen any action yet. Last week at Bill Petraiulo from Mayfield dislocated his ankle, had surgery and was in a lower leg cast yesterday. Tyler Shutz from Mentor is the long snapper. Steve Wirkus from Brecksville made some nice plays yesterday and Sean Belanger from Rocky River saw action. Next Saturday is a night game against Central State who by the way plays some home games at Welcome Stadium but will be the visitors this time.

Steve Valentino continues climbing the All-Time UD records and is now 4th place in Total Offense and 7th in Passing.

Dayton holds off Morehead State 34-28
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Steve Valentino threw for one touchdown and rushed for another score as Dayton held off Morehead State's late rally in a 34-28 win on Saturday.
The Flyers (2-1, 1-0 Pioneer League) took a 24-0 lead on Dan Jacob's 12-yard run with 1:26 left in second quarter.
Morehead State quarterback Zach Lewis connected with Andre Williams on a 35-yard touchdown, cutting Dayton's lead to 27-14 in the fourth quarter. Valentino threw a 50-yard touchdown to Luke Bellman to put the Flyers ahead by 20 points.
Lewis answered with touchdown passes of 69 and 49 yards, trimming the margin to 34-28 with 4:21 left in the game for the Eagles (1-2, 0-1). But Dayton held Morehead State scoreless the rest of the way.
Valentino, who threw for 243 yards, also ran for 81 yards on 21 carries for Dayton.
Lewis had 349 yards passing, two more scoring passes and an interception for Morehead State.

Flyers coast to 45-13 win

T'was a brief night for starters on UD, Steve was done after 4-1/2 minutes of the 2nd qtr. In their first night game since 2004, the Flyers shut the lights on Central State quick, allowing them one play over midfield in the first half while they put up points from great field position.

Joe (Janasek) got major PT both as LB and on KO teams.

Valparaiso comes to Dayton- Big mistake Valpo

UD RESUMES PFL PLAY AT WELCOME STADIUM WITH VALPARAISO SATURDAY AT 1 PM

Head coach Rick Chamberlin has been a part of 315 UD football wins as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

PDF Game Notes

With non-conference football out of the way, the University of Dayton will get back into Pioneer Football League action Saturday when the Flyers host the Valparaiso Crusaders at Welcome Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET.
UD is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the PFL. Dayton’s 1-0 conference mark places the Flyers in first place with Drake, Jacksonville and San Diego.
Valparaiso is 0-4 in its first season under new coach Dale Carlson, but the Crusaders’ lone league loss is a narrow 21-19 decision last week against Drake.
Head coach Rick Chamberlin has guided UD to 9-3 and 9-2 records in his first two seasons.

Steve Valentino is third in career total offense with 4,337 yards. Next on the list is Kelly Spiker (5,138). Valentino is also sixth in career yards passing (3,195). In his sights are Dan Sharley (3,229) and Kevin Johns (3,572). Valentino is now third in career pass completions (257). Steve Keller is second at 273.

PFL MEANS PIONEER FOOTBALL LEADERS
UD leads the PFL in scoring offense (34.5), rushing offense (189.0), rushing defense (60.5), first downs (22.2), opponent first downs (16.2), kickoff returns (26.6), punt returns (15.4), sacks (2.75, tied with USD and VU), 4th down conversions (85.7%, 6-7), opponent 3rd down conversions (32.1%, 17-53) and time of possession (34:34). Flyers now 4-1

Dayton had a bust-out 3rd qtr in a 48-14 win against Valparaiso. Lot of scoring on the ground including one by Steve Valentino who also moved into 3rd place in UD career Total Offense.

Joe Janasek got playing time & I hope he makes the travel squad for San Diego this week.

Valentino lunges for another 1st down against Valparaiso

Two outstanding performances acknowledged by the league: Senior James Vercammen was named defensive player of the week and freshman Gary Hunter was the special teams player of the week in the Pioneer Football League after helping the University of Dayton to a 48-14 win over Valparaiso on Saturday.
Vercammen, who plays the linebacker/safety position known as “Flyer,” led UD with 12 tackles (five solo), including a sack, and recovered a fumble.
Hunter, a cornerback from Detroit, became the first freshman in the 105-year history of UD football to return a kickoff for a touchdown. He gave the Flyers the lead in the first quarter with an 82-yard return.
Dayton (4-1, 2-0) plays at San Diego on Saturday.

T'was a brutal game as well with the last scoreless 12 minutes belonging to each team's DEFENSE. Finally, after two 4th down stops by Valentino's housemate, Joe Reis, the victory formation for the last snap belonged to the Flyers.

You Comet fans would have really enjoyed the trick play - the one we've waited 5 years for. Less than 2 minutes in the first half with a 7-7 tie score and UD was thrown for a loss from the 3 back to the 6 yard line. U of San Diego calls a T.O. to set the second down defense & get a breath in the brutally hot sun. This gives the UD staff time to think & think & think they did! Valentino takes the shotgun snap at the 6 yard line & after a step or two, pitches to the RB headed to the right and the line flow is that direction. Steve slips out to the left into the end zone. After the game, my photographer friend behind the end zone with lens following the play when out of the corner of his eye he sees Tino. "That's too long of a fake for him so I turned my camera and I think I got it", he said. Anyway, when Taylor Harris got near the hash marks he stopped and lofted a pass back to a wide open Flyer in the end zone. It required Steve to change his momentum and reach back for the ball, but he pulled it into his body, rolled over & jumped to his feet. 14-7 Dayton!
