All-Time Lists Update - UPDATED 4 November - Boys' 4x1,2,4,8 added

Javman's attachment is where I got my information. In the first article it indicates King "authored" an alltime Ohio record (column 2, paragraph 6).
Great minds think alike.

I actually have a hard copy of that issue buried in my personal HS files.

Javman - is there any local library that has OTFN on microfiche or digitized or whatever the kids are calling it these days? It looks like it started in 1965. Thanks.

That's an EXCELLENT question and request. NONE that I'm aware of. That publication is now several decades in the past. The only thing I can think of is someone who knew those who published it. Contacting those families might prove fruitful.

In the Cincinnati area, the archives of Don Connoly (spelling?) would be of prime interest. He had his own newsletter back in the 1970s, and he produced untold numbers of meet results every year in both track & XC. I can only pray he has plans to pass those along or will them to a public institution, which is one of the things I plan to do with my data when the day comes.

Update on top-50 lists:

Boys Field Events (outdoor only - known thru July 2023)
  • High Jump - 57 athletes @ 6' 11" or better, 40 @ 7' 0" or better
  • Pole Vault - 55 athletes @ 16' or better
  • Long Jump - 50 athletes @ 23' 11" or better with recognized legal jumps (either with wind-legal gauge reading or recognized by T&F News as wind-legal due to their reporting network)
  • Triple Jump - due to lack of triple jump opportunities in Ohio over the decades, the list is thin with wind-legal marks. I'm working towards a way to produce a decent listing - probably down to the 45 foot level.
  • Shot Put - 50 athletes @ 63' 0 1/2" or better, 147 athletes @ 60' or better
  • Discus Throw - 50 athletes @ 189' 6" or better, 12 @ 200' or better
  • Hammer Throw - 50 athletes @ 176' 6" or better, 20 @ 200' or better
  • Javelin Throw - 25 athletes @ 140' 0" or better, 10 @ 164' (50m) or better. This is another event that needs A LOT MORE boys attempting it. Note: This list includes post-1986 javelins. I have separate lists under development for the pre-1986 metal javelins, and before those, wooden-shaft/metal-tip era that existed prior to the 1950s. OHSAA eliminated the javelin from their program subsequent to the 1937 school year.
My lists actually go deeper than what I've listed. Trying to go min. 100 deep, but those are longer-term projects.

Targeting late August release of complete initial top-50 lists for the boys side. Targeting late October for the girls' side.

Still on target for late August release of the boys' top-50 lists. Tightening up the 8/16/32 lists, and working on consistent formatting across each of the events for pertinent information.

Additional work has been going into my research into the entire history of the State meets from 1908 forward (including the pre-State meets of 1905-07). I just bagged the entire set of field event marks for the 1950-59 state meets for each of the two classes this weekend. I'm planning on an initial release of the 1908-1920 meets by the end of this year (I have some more on-site research at certain libraries to do), and then the 1921-1970 period by the end of 2024. I'll continue to add winners' lists per event & classification to the other thread as I complete them.

Do you use any of the newspaper archives on https://directory.advantage-preservation.com/SiteDirectory? Luckily my hometown newspaper had all their archives on there and so do a couple of the others towns in the area. Makes it a lot easier to find old results and times. Although some of them are clearly incorrect/typo'd.

Not as yet, but thank you for that link! I do use newspaper archives however. Unfortunately, there's still a whole lot of data that will never make it on to online repositories and can only be dugout in local libraries, assuming the information still exists. I've already got 5-6 thousand hours put into research & compilations over the last 14 years, and I expect to hit 10k hours by time I'm done, assuming I'm still around and functioning by then. Thank you for that info!

OK, I'm updating all the individual events for both boys & girls through the state meets currently. As it stands now, I think I'll be able to put out whole batch of top 50 (where known) for individual events by the end of August. This compilation is 5 years in the making in its current form, but the genesis of it for me goes back to the late 1980s when I first started paying attention to the subject. I hope that this effort will help coaches out there to either spot mistakes or missing information from my compilations, but also to provide information on athletes that may have been missed on your own lists.

After that, it'll most likely take me a year to get the standard 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, and 4x8 lists together along with individual updates in the 2023-24 season. Hope to have the whole package ready for a yearly update for August releases after the Junior Olympic meets are completed.

I'm also working towards the same end for the indoor events. Top 30 in those.

Thank you for your patience.
Hi Javman83, I haven't been on this site in awhile. Love to s these lists your coming up with. Where would we find these lists? Girls and boys? Thank you

I only publish these here, currently. I intend on publishing the boys' lists later this month. Here's the current cutoffs for the throwing events on the boys' side:

Top 50
Shot - 63' 0 1/2"
Discus - 189' 6"
Hammer - 176' 6"

Top 25
Javelin - 140' 9"

Here's the first set of Boys' All-Time Top 50 performers for the field events and the cut-off standards (sans the Triple Jump - still under development) of:

High Jump (6' 11")
Pole Vault (16' 0")
Long Jump (23' 11 1/4")
Shot Put (63' 0 1/2")
Discus Throw (189' 6")
Hammer Throw (176' 6")
Javelin Throw (140' cut-off - 27 boys over using the 1986 Javelin model)

So, at long last, here's the first set. Sorry for the delay, but the running events are being printed out this week and should release next weekend.

The D3 200m record would Josh Verhoff's 21.39
Thank you. Another item I have to flag OHSAA about that they've got wrong on their official records lists that they gave to Finishtiming, from where I got the info. I've got other marks to flag Finishtiming about (not their fault - purely OHSAA's). My first priority is getting these massive lists done.

OHSAA had the OHSAA D3 record as the 21.50; however, they had the State meet D3 record as the 21.39. The list was put out earlier this year, so obviously, they don't have cross-checkers like we have here. :)

Thanks again.

Working on finalizing the 400/800 lists the next few days. Cut-offs in those events are around the 47.4 / 1:51+ marks

The 1600/3200 cut-offs are in the 4:11 / 9:08 range.

Boys' All-Time 400m - Top 50

Top 50 cut-off marks:
400m - 47.46 seconds

Also, the 200m has been updated after the stunning movement of Mateo Medina into the #3 all-time position with his massive improvement over the summer from 21.35 to 20.87 at the USATF JO nationals!

A couple additions to the 800M list(sub 1:51.8):

Brannon Kidder (Lancaster) also ran 1:51.09 in the 2012 State Championship, 6/2/2012
Stephen Sparks (Lancaster) ran 1:51.23 at the 2014 Pickerington Regional, 5/30/14 and 1:51.59 in the 2014 State Championship, 6/7/14

Thank you so much. The database has been updated. The 1:51.59 by Sparks at State in '14 doesn't show in the top 50 performances; however, as with all the lists I produce, the actual database is much deeper. I'm taking the non-seen database out to sub-1:52.50 for the 800m, and the eventual 880 yard list out to sub-1:53.0. The same process will happen with other events as time allows and research continues.

1600m/3200m boys lists will be out this weekend. Wrapping up missing info on both lists this week. Currently, the top-50 cut-offs are 4:11.23 & 9:08.53. These are 1600m/3200m times, not converted, but converted mile/2-mile performances will be show concurrently as a historical reference for comparison.

The 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, and 4x8 relays will be out by the end of October. Most of that work is already done.

The girls' lists I'm looking to have out by the end of '23. Then onto the indoor season!

As a short follow-up before posting the 16/32 lists this weekend, I note the #18 ranked combined 16/miler of Ohio history hanging tough after 54 years - Reggie McAfee (Cincy Courter Tech) with his 4:08.5 MT mile at the '69 Class AA meet. That was an all-time Ohio record by 4.8 seconds, breaking McAfee's own 4:13.3 from several weeks before the state meet. He also followed that Ohio record with another Ohio record of 1:52.5 in the 880, breaking the old record by 1.3 seconds.

Dude was a stud.

I would still think this goes down as one of the greatest if not the greatest distance double. He obliterated existing state/all-time records. The girls meet had not started, so it was just the boys. If the AA and A meets were run separately, Reg would have had very little time between events.

I don't have a '69 program in front of me, but I've got access to one from the '66 year. The basic order of events has been very much like today's since the 1920s with minor variations. I think it would've run something like this:

Class AA - Mile
Class A - Mile

Class AA - 440 yard
Class A - 440 yard

Class AA - 180 yard LH
Class A - 180 yard LH

Class AA - 880 yard
Class A - 880 yard

Given that, I'm thinking he had at most 40 minutes between events. As you said, one of the all-time great doubles. Especially given the shoes of that era and the early, hard synthetic surfaces common of that era.

The Scott Fry double where he broke the mile and two mile record at the 1985 Class AA may be the only one to top it. The two mile record still stands.
