Jackson-South-Norton Scrimmage

Stopped over at Jackson tonight to check out this scrimmage... all three teams showed good sides and areas needing improvement. I didn't keep track of scores/who beat who, but if I were to guess, South won the most quarters, Jackson second, and Norton third.

South: People aren't giving this team and their staff enough credit/they're under-estimating them but I'm sure they're ok with that. They've got basically everyone back and they still don't have any seniors I don't think? The taller light-skinned wing (#21) is tough, and the whole team played hard the entire night. Heard their best post player didn't play tonight because of recent wisdom tooth work. Their coach is fun to watch too, he really gets into the game

Jackson: No Duffy tonight, and I'd imagine they have a couple kids on the state-found VB team. Played scrappy and a couple of younger kids did relatively very well for them tonight, especially in the post. They've got pretty good ball-handling in the starters, but not sure beyond that. They'll struggle against the top tier Fed teams obviously, but if they can find a way to handle other team's bigs inside, they can hang with the other teams in the league imho.

Norton: They struggled tonight, but you can tell the makings of a very good team are there. Cook is fun to watch play, and their left-handed point guard had some stand out moments in my memory. The other stocky built blond guard did well also. Typical Miller-coached team, fundamentally solid, pressure the ball, etc... surprised though at how weak they played at times. His teams are know for being physical/strong. Could just be a one night thing... I'm sure they'll be fine

McGal,

Wow... we agree!!! I too saw the scrimmage. Actually only stayed for about a little over half of it with my good friend watching his daughter. South looked GOOD!!! I think the light skin girl you are talking about is their only senior, or maybe they have one other senior. Either way, South looked really good last night. I know 2-3 soph. play and alot of Jrs. I know that staff/team has put in alot of time, hoping it pays off. Yeah, I agree, coach is fun to watch.

Norton, I know very little about. I was not too impressed but I think they will come around. I agree... I think Jackson had some girls playing volleyball. If they had some girls playing volleyball, and are decent post players, they may make some noise. I like their guard play. I thought they had some good penetraters, and decent outside shooters. You add some perimeter players, I think they will be OK in the FL. I just don't see them beating Hoover, Mck, or Lake for sure. But I think they will be competitive with GO, Perry, and Boardman.

I am pretty sure that South has at least one senior, Morgan Jeter.

MCGal, how did the Grace girl look for Jackson?

Ask and you shall receive..........

They are in TROUBLE without Duffy. The 2 post are not very athletic. The point guard thinks she is Dwayne Wade (but is not) just like the last years senior point guard. PG's that drive into defenses and turn the ball over double digit times are doomed for failure. This years senior guard needs to learn how to play defense.

All in all they looked like a Gomer Pyle coached team and will be battling Boardman for the bottom of the Federal League.

Did some research on South. They have 2 seniors. McGal...Jeter is a Sr. and the really tall girl off the bench is a Sr. that is it. I was also told the player that was out sitting in street clothes on the bench is a Soph. that starts and will be an even bigger help to the wildcats. I was also told the JV wildcats ran the table vs. Norton/Jackson in the other gym. Present and Future could be bright.

Ok that's the girls name I couldn't remember... if she's a senior, that'll be a big loss for them after this year. She's long, plays smooth, and has a nice touch on her shot.

thewho, the big girl's good for size, but clearly raw in terms of talent/skill. I also heard the post who was out that night is their best inside player.

Popeye, how many turnovers did that guard that you decided to bash have the other night? I bet you don't even know.

Yeah, I was told the same thing. She played JV last year and sat varsity and got some minutes is what was said to me. I guess she had a very good summer and will probably start. I think the little guard, lefty, she is either a Fr. or soph as well. She played well.

Martin is a Jr. I have watched her the last 2 years. She may be their best player. I know last year (according to the Canton Rep), she led them in scoring as a soph.

I know Jackson is not getting much praise, but I saw alot of fire in their coach, and I don't think they were bad. If they get some volleyball girls, I think they are at least 8-12 win frame. No volleyball girls, playing in the FL, maybe 6-7 win frame. My opinion.

Yep, you weren't there... figured as much. It'd be nice if you didn't extend your hatred for Fisher to ALL of the kids

thewho,

Jeter's a "better" player imho and is significantly improved over the past couple years, but I'd take Martin on my team any day... positive, motivated kid who does a great job of motivating her teammates.

I just can't believe me and you are getting along and agreeing! We will see if this continues when the season starts. As I have said before, I will be taking in alot of boys/girls bball in the NBC and FL, and probably independents. Pac 7, aaaaaa, not sure if I am traveling that far south for a league I know little about. Though I was entertained last year when I saw Manchester, but I am sure they won't be that good again.

I was there. You think you have some insight?????? What is your game? You live in these courts with teenage girls. Your 24/7 obsession with sub 17 year old girls is concerning. You label your obsession as a fan????? If I were the parent of the point guard you are defending, I would be concerned.

Typical of you popeye... when confronted with facts, attack the person. Sad part is you actually think people CARE what you have to say about them (players, coaches, or fans). You're wrong once again.

Grace is only a sophmore and she is a point guard. She has a three point shot mentality and to be nice, isn't a defensive specialist.

BB1, you misread the conversation. I was referring to the Jeter girl from South. I think everyone on here (including good ol' popeye) knows Grace's game well.

Popeye777,

I gotta ask, what is your deal with the girls coach? I saw him coach hard the other night in the scrimmage and it appeared he had the respect of the players. There are some girls coaches who may win 1-2-3 games a year and you don't see people calling for their job. This guy has been around or above 500 I believe in a VERY GOOD LEAGUE (HOOVER-McK.-Lake 6 of your 20 games). I don't know much or really anything about the Jackson girls program, but if he had kids playing volleyball the other night, and are not bad bball players, Jackson may be better then people think. I just don't understand the hatred, but again... I am not a Jackson girls basketball supporter, I guess just curious.

As I said probably 100 posts ago... I have watched alot of boys/girls bball when my kids played, now watching buddies kids, and if I had no person particular to watch, I would still go watch local games. I have seen alot of good players and good coaches in this county, even on bad teams. I just felt the Jackson coach-coached hard and he did nothing out of the ordinary to me!

Check some other threads, I have been calling south as a sleeper team for months now. Glad people are finally coming to my side on this one.

TheBranch, I knew they had talent so I was somewhat on your side before, but their coaches have done a great job getting those kids to play hard and together. Hopefully they'll keep it up through the season

Thewho, look back through popeye's posts.. you'll figure him out pretty quick.

McGal, I will check out the previous posts on Mr. Popeye.

McGal/The Branch, I agree... south could be someone this year. I only worry because they are still young. According to their schedule I viewed, they start off with C. Catholic, Dover, and W. Branch. They could be 0-3 very easily to start. I think they could be better then some of their out of league opponents, and in league games. If they start 1-2 or 0-3, I hope they can keep thier confidence when it comes time for games they should win. I know this much, I would not want to start with those three games to start the season. But either way, I know the coaching staff and kids at South will be ready to go. That is a group of fighters no matter what the odds are against them!

He won't answer, because he'd out himself. No one is good enough for a certain player in his mind, so Fisher was in a no-win situation from the start. Fisher's not perfect, but he's certainly not deserving of the attacks pops and marymary let fly on here regularly.
