Article: Newark Catholic Green Wave dominate Whitehall
Lat night Newark Catholic traveled to Gahanna to battle to Whitehall Rams in a game that ended with the Green Wave easily defeating the Rams,41-6. The Rams came into this one in the heels of a 24-6 victory over the Lakewood Lancers. Newark Catholic came in riding a six game winning streak, including a 25-9 win over Licking Valley last week
Kevin(LIGHTSOUT) Bourne took the opening kickoff to the forty-one-yard line as the night got off to a promising start for the visitors. #67 from Whitehall got Bourne for a three-yard-loss with 11:42 showing on the opening quarter clock. There was 9:43 remaining in the opening quarter when Chayce(THE PROJECT)Crouch had a receiver wide opened but he opted to take off and he would come up short of the chains forcing the Green Wave to punt the ball away.
Crouch would hit a big fifty-five-yard punt as the young punter continues on his punting in a big way.
The Green Wave defense would make fast work in getting the ball back to its offense as it held the Rams to four-yards on their first drive,
There was 5:30 left in the quarter when Ryan(The Surgeon)Fitzgerald got way behind the Rams secondary but the pass by Crouch was over thrown by five-yards. Fitzgerald would take the snap from center and take off on a fine seventeen-yard touchdown run to put the Green Wave up,6-0, with 4:35 showing on the clock. The point after attempt by Sam Bell was blocked. The drive totaled eight plays and went for fifty-eight-yards.
The Rams would go to the ground game with 3:30 left in the first but the Green Wave defense led by Mike Lohr got to #3 for a four-yard-loss. Then with 2:17 showing on the clock the Rams got the ball to #88, but he would be held short of the chains when Hunter Nance brought him down.
Fitzgerald would pick up a big gain with 50.9 seconds left as he used his speed to get down to the Rams thirty-two-yard-line. The Rams defense would come up with a sack of Crouch when #27 got to the quarterback for a six-yard-loss. The quarter came to a close with a seven-yard run by Aaron Jurden.
Newark Catholic would close out the seven-play seventy-six-yard drive when Crouch threw nice looking pass to Mitch (SWISH) Cox, good for a thirty-one-yard touchdown. The Green Wave would bring out their fourth kicker to attempt a extra point this season and the kick by Lohr would split the uprights GIVING Newark Catholic a, 13-0 lead, with 11:46 left in the half.
Crouch would use a nice ball fake allowing him to run for six-yards, with 7:35 left in the first half. Crouch would throw a nice ball that Drew Buchanan came down with to pick up another first down, with 6:56 left in the half. From there Newark Catholic used some nice blocking by the offensive line to allow D.J. Devito to use his speed to pick up another first down. With 5:50 left on the clock Crouch threw a long bomb that landed in the arms of Jurden who easily scored on the play. Lohr hit his second point after kick to increase the lead to,20-0. The drive took five plays and went for eighty yards.
The Rams fumbled the ensuing kickoff and after the pile was cleared the Green Wave was awarded the football, with 5:41 left. The Rams would get another sack on Crouch this one came from #63 and it went for a eight-yard loss.
Crouch would connect with Bourne, who used a nice move on his way to a sixteen-yard pickup, with 4:50 left in the half.. Crouch would use another nice ball fake that lead him to score from four-yards out. Lohr again hit the point after kick and with 4:23 left in the half Newark Catholic had, 27-0 lead.
The Rams would force a Newark Catholic punt with 56.4 left on the clock but another special teams mistake, a fumble allowed Newark Catholic to get the ball back on the Rams twenty.
Newark Catholic would scores two-plays later. The score came on a twenty-yard run by Fitzgerald.. Lohr would make the point after to give the Green Wave a,34-0 lead at the half.
The second half would be a very strange one. White Hall would run thirty eight plays, while Newark Catholic would run only eight, but out score the Rams, 7-6.
With the Rams driving Bourne would come up huge again for Newark Catholic, This time he picked off a pass and take it to the house from about sixty-five-yards out. Bell would be called on to kick the point after and did so to increase the lead to,41-0, with 7:09 left in the third.
With just 3:43 left in the fast moving third quarter Erik (THE GHOST) Lensink got to #7 of the Rams for a seven-yard loss. Brian Shumaker would record a sack on the Rams quarterback, with 1:35 left in the third that totaled a three-yard-loss. Bourne would pick off another pass to close out the third quarter keeping the Rams off of the board again.
The Green Wave starters were on the bench and the Rams starting unit took advantage of that as they drove down to the four-yard-line. From there the Rams quarterback took it to close out the scoring.
