At this point it is hard to determine how good Howland will be. They graduated a lot of starters in virtually every area except, QB, RB, and WR. They traditionally have been finding a way to reload, but they have also lost a few assistant coaches to rival Warren Harding. It will be interesting to see how Coach Angle fills the open playing and coaching positions and prepares the team for another season. I still think they will be in the playoff hunt.

I am being overcharged for this internet connection so I might as well use it.
Couldn't think of anything else to say so I'll just copy and paste the 2012 schedule for Uniontown Lake.
The nice thing about this schedule, is that if, no... when Lake makes the playoffs, they never have to face a team that they played earlier in the season.

8/7/2012 Akron St. V Scrimmage Home 1:00pm
8/11/2012 Steubenville Scrimmage Away 10:00am
8/16/2012 Akron Hoban Scrimmage Home 6:00pm

8/24/2012 Green Bulldogs Away 7:00pm
8/31/2012 Hudson Explorers Home 7:00pm
9/7/2012 Olentangy Liberty Home 7:00pm
9/14/2012 Jackson Polar Bears Away 7:00pm
9/21/2012 Canton McKinley Bulldogs Home 7:00pm
9/28/2012 North Canton Hoover Vikings Away 7:00pm
10/5/2012 Perry Panthers Away 7:00pm
10/12/2012 GlenOak Golden Eagles Home 7:00pm
10/19/2012 Austintown Fitch Falcons Away 7:30pm
10/26/2012 Boardman Spartans Home 7:00pm

No need for you to bother looking it up, all the scrimmages are DIII and all the regular season games are DI.

Back when Lake was in R7, they would get enough points to make the playoffs when 7-3, sometimes in at 6-4. 5 & 5 would be tough. About 12 / 15 years ago they made the playoffs at 4-6. Sometimes they run deep, sometimes they don't.

I think that one of the best things about the schedule above is that these kids are not impressed or intimidated by anyone when they get to week 11, 12, 13, or 14. For Lake, every game is a playoff game.

Gotta go, wife will be home any minute.

Later.

They are returning a whole lot of starters for Lake, especially with the "skilled" positions. Bringing back 2 or 3 D linemen and I believe 3 O linemen as well. Could be a very good year. One thing is for sure, Durbin and his staff will not let the team have another season like last year. A lot of close games that they just didn't pull out. These kinds of schedules which Lake has always played (at least 7-8 DI schools per year) will pay dividends next season with the restructure of divisions and the arrival of teams such as McKinley, Massillon, Walsh Jesuit and Glenville in DII

Considering the strength of the teams typically in R5, the strangest stat to me is that the R5 winner has not won a state semi game since Olmsted Falls did it in 2000. I would say the odds should be in R5's favor to break that streak, but R6 is once again blessed with some very good teams.

Two weeks since the last post. Is anyone in R5 still awake?

Aurora will be very good again this year. Week one showdown with Twinsburg should be a heck of a game. Barring injuries, Aurora will make their 8th straight playoff appearance. (3 final fours and a State title over the last 7 years) We will root for a rematch with our friends from Avon! Eagles are high quality program in region 6.

I'm sure the Greenmen will be more than happy to face anyone from R6, because R5 is going to be very tough again. The same goes for Avon in R6. There are some great teams standing in the way of another Avon/Aurora meeting, but I'll definitely be rooting for another round against our friends from Aurora!

Kent Roosevelt should be a top 3 seed with All-State QB back and a defense which according to the coach is supposed to be the best he has ever had. Plus returns 2 starting WR and an up and coming RB along with a big but unproven line.

If Hoban comes flat and sloppy like they did week 1 vs Gonzaga last year..expect a blowout with Kent winning by 20+

Kent will be fired up after last years playoff loss to Walsh. They will be ready and there might be a rematch with Walsh.

I know that everyday in the weight room the QB writes 49-14 score from the Walsh game on the board for everyone to see. I have several of the sophmore football players in my class at Roosevelt and they have said several times that next year to them is a ring or a bust season. I dont know if they are that good or just a little overzealous.

Walsh won't be the only team that could give the Rough Riders fits. Region 5 isnt better than Region 9, but there are some teams in there that might give Kent problems. Aurora, Tallmadge, Lake, and West Geauga come to mind.

How about play one game at a time. Doesn't Trotwood return most of their team? Like two great runningbacks, one with over 2,000 yrds and the other over 1,000?

Better stop dwelling on the loss to Walsh. Who know's if you'll even meet in the playoffs.

I think its more of a reminder to not let yourself fall asleep. Much like they did in th second half agaisnt Walsh.

Wait...a state championship ring or a PTC title? Has Roosevelt ever even won a playoff game?

They won their first one last year I believe. Most of the hype is due to the star QB who everyone see's as one of the best players in the state.

Kent could go 9-1 and not even get a home playoff game.
Stow, Falls, Norton, Coventry, Crestwood and Springfield are all terrible teams. Kent goes 6-0 through them but those 6 teams will probably go 10-50 or worse. Hoban will be better, but with their schedule they'll be lucky to win 3 games.

Field, Ravenna and Streetsboro are decent, but overall this is a very weak schedule. I'd bet Kent goes 9-1 and grabs a 4 or 5 seed.

A month since the last post.

Is R-5 closed for the summer?

Only 48 days till kickoff.

List your prediction (wish list) of the 8 R-5 teams that will be playing on week 11. Go even farther and mark the 4 home teams.

Go for it, it's free!!

Tallmage will be the team to beat this year in 5. Kent will do good but losing 26 seniors and all of the play makers but three. QB,LB, slot r from what I see.
My home team THE SPARTANS return all starters but 3. RB I believe is very good . New recruits .... I mean transfers... all three are players. downside, no seniors.

Kent may have issues with Aurora, Walsh, Lake, Tallmadge, Louisville and Canfield, but I wouldn't take them lightly.

It's going to be hard to pick a team to win the region.

Actually, it's pretty easy to pick the favorite. Aurora returns as much, or more, than anyone else in the region. They won the region last year. Nobody else returns more than Aurora. They are the team to beat. Way back at the beginning of this thread I felt Kent Roosevelt should be favored because Chapman is such an elite player, but I didn't realize they graduated nearly all their 2011 starters. That, to me, made Aurora the no-brainer favorite to win it again. Doesn't mean they will, but I don't see many teams in this region that I think will beat them in a playoff game. Walsh probably being the only one I think can do it, but Aurora seems to have Walsh's number in the playoffs. Tallmadge returns a lot of starters, but not as many as Aurora...and Aurora handled them last year. Still, they play the games for a reason, and as of today it's anyone's region. Aurora is the team to beat (IMO), however.

I was shocked myself the Rough Riders lost a lot as well...they will still be a playoff team and will be ready for Hoban week 1. I wouldn't count out Stark County teams. After week 7, I'll make my call who the team to beat is. Lake returns a lot.

Other than Gotto who does Tallmadge return to make them the favorites? I would guess on paper that Aurora or Walsh is the best team in this region but for sure Tallmadge is in the top 4 or 5.

That sounds like Tallmadge will be great in helping Avon to get ready for the new season, with the jamboree/final scrimmage between Tallmadge and Avon. The Blue Devils are a veteran playoff team with a very real shot at a deep playoff run this season. Avon will be breaking in a new QB and a couple new WR's on offense, and a whole new LB corps on defense. The test from Tallmadge can only help speed their growth.

Tallmadge and Avon would be a great non-conference game, if they both decide to ever do a deal. I know Avon's AD has said he would like to get Aurora back on the non-conference schedule, but Coach Mihalik doesn't want to do it. I don't blame him. He and Avon's coach are pretty good friends, and a lot of times these guys don't want to be in a position to deal each losses if they can avoid any meeting until the playoffs.

Tallmadge staff doesn't like to put major competitors on our schedule either. Our league gives us a lot of computer points, so we really can go after habin cows for our out of league games. Play teams that are consistently 6-4 or 7-3.

As for the scrimmage, we usually don't worry about scoring, we usually worry about being physical.
