There should be high expectations in Mentor this season as the Cougars look to have another great regular season and hopefully a long playoff run in 2012. The inexperienced Cougars from last season surprised many fans including myself by finishing 9-1 with big victories against Ursuline, Mooney, and Avon. LC does graduate some skilled players on the offensive side of the ball, however QB Mark Baniewicz and some of the key lineman anchored by Evan Grosel will return to lead the offense. The Cougars have some nice returning players on the defensive side of the ball as well. Leading the way for the defense will be DE John Stepec who had a great season last year and should have many Division I offers by this time next year. Also, LC has a strong Freshman class coming in which should make the next 4 years very fun to be a Cougar Fan.
The schedule is not 100% complete, but here is what I do know...
Weeks 6, 7, and 8 may flip flop a bit, but everything else is accurate I do believe. Week 2 is still open as of now, but it won't be for long. There is one of two teams the Cougars are lined up to play, but I won't disclose until 100% confirmed. And unfortunatly...it's not the Mentor Cardinals who last time I checked was still open week 2.
Grosel...attended Ignatius for his first two years of high school. Certainly didn't leave because the o-line competition was too stiff. Anyone know the story?
lchs fire me a PM about week 2. You obviously know I can keep secrets from our past discussions. I too have heard that LC/Mentor aren't considering each other despite the mutual opening. A million rumors on our end though and not a 1 or 2 team discussion.
Good looking schedule as usual. Scheduling is pretty routine for the 2 Mentor schools though. Lake Catholic has the 5 NCL games plus Mooney/Ursuline every season. Mentor has the 7 NOC games plus Ignatius/Euclid every year. Always good to have 7 or 8 games lined up without even trying and these 2 schools have that.

How could he play as a Junior for LC then? If he was at Iggy for two years OHSAA rules would say he would have to sit out his Junior year.
lchsman: How have you been? Look forward to seeing you in Week 5. Hopefully, the Mooney family will see you before that.
Doing well mother_goose. I took in the LC - Chanel boys hoops game last night at LC. The Cougars knocked off the #1 ranked team in Division III last night. LC is now 11-2 and ranked 14th in the state in Division II. I can't remember the last time our hoops team was ever state ranked.

I could be wrong Auggie, but I think if you transfer private to private you don't have to sit out a year. And I just say this as I'm sure the coaching staff would've looked into this when he did decide to transfer.

Well, Avon is full for 2012, but a lot of people have a good feeling about last year's game with LC, and how valuable it was to get Avon ready for the playoffs.
Avon's schedule in 2013 (and beyond) is a bit uncertain, but it looks as though the West Shore Conference and Southwestern Conference will both have seven teams in 2013, and are looking at filling each other's Week 4-10 open dates in 2013 and beyond. For Avon, I suspect that will wind up being Avon Lake...and probably in Week 10, which will be awesome for both communities. Since AL/Avon has been a season opener the past few years, Avon would need a Week 1 and Week 2 in 2013. Lake Catholic would be a very nice opener for Avon. Have the LC AD make the call. Can't help you in 2012, though, but I hope LC has a great season!

You would have to sit out transferring private to private! The only way you can become eligible is to transfer back to your (Home) School where you reside!

Well I do believe he and his family reside in Mentor. Maybe that was the reason he transferred back to his (Home) school. Iggy is not exactly a close drive.

Lots of people do it every day. The western terminus of the Laketran Route 13 (aka "The Wickliffe/Willoughby Hills Park-n-Ride") bus that goes to downtown Cleveland is not The Terminal Tower, or West 9th Street. It's St. Ignatius High School. One boring morning about a year or two ago, I watched the kids getting off the Laketran bus. I counted 20-25 kids. That's just the kids from Lake County who ride that bus.

Not true. Padua had two players transfer from Holy Name after their Sophomore seasons and played their Junior year (2010/2011).
I'm going to predict here that LC will take the NCL title and advance to the State Semis (much more confident about the NCL part).
Look forward to coming out to Mentor in October to see Padua/LC.

Actually, the OHSAA Bylaws state the following:
Quote:
4-7-7 If a student transfers to a high school located within the jurisdiction of a non-public multiple high school system (e.g., Catholic Conference of Ohio, Ohio Association of Independent Schools, Association of Christian Schools International or other category as denoted by the State Department of Education) from another high school within that same system, the student may have his/her eligibility restored by the Commissioner’s office provided the following conditions have been met:
1) The student has been reassigned to the high school by the superintendent or other administrative authority of that school system as a result of a specific change of academic program; or a material change in economic circumstances so as to create a hardship; or a material change in transportation circumstances so as to create a hardship; and
2) The transfer takes place prior to the beginning of the school year; and
3) The superintendent or other administrative authority of the system petitions the Commissioner’s office for the restoration of eligibility for the student verifying in detail the specific reason for the transfer in accordance with item #1 and certifying that the transfer is not for athletic reasons no later than 15 school days after the beginning of the school year; and
4) The student is ineligible until ruled eligible by the Commissioner’s office.
STVM returns most of the skills and a very athletic Junior (Defense) Class
Benedictine will continue to improve
Lake Catholic fits in the top 3 of the region
Chagrin Falls will be in the mix
Very tough region

Although LC would be favored most years, isn't it about time these two schools begin playing one another?
I wondered that myself BuckNut. Before last season in the playoffs, you have to go all the way back to 1991 since these two schools have played. And that was also a playoff game. The last time Akron St. Vincent and LC has played a regular season game was 1981.
