Now that the T's have been crossed and the I's have been dotted, how do you all think this wonder staff will do with the available talent. I know the D kept them in many games, and the O was pathetic, but do they really have players back? I looked up the D3, AAC, and Trumbull County all star teams and all I read was about the offense. What Gives? Was that just Yeager covering his own butt, because he was O coordinator, or was the O underrrated? Can they compete?
If Niles has a good QB to step in this year I believe they will be solid. The offense has been pretty bad during the last few years. I would give last years offense an average rating, nothing spectacular. It wasn't an offense that could carry a team to victories by itself. In the past, Niles has had good teams that didn't score a ton of points. The difference is that those teams pounded the ball and ate the clock while playing great defense.
I don’t know it would be nice if Coach Shaner could come here and turn the program around on a dime but I have reservations. No question he is off on the right foot putting together a respectable staff and I am confident given the time and a free hand he’ll bring Niles back to a competitive mode.
Right now I see Niles going 4-6 or 5-5 to 6-4 at best. To go 6-4 this coming season would be a God send and what a turn around that would be. I just feel Poland, Howland, Canfield, Hubbard and Girard are so far ahead of Niles in development that it would take a crow bar to open the lid to victory and one of those five has to fall in order to go 6-4.
The ego nuts in Niles first have to resign themselves to the fact they have to get out of the way and let the coach’s coach. Let Coach Shaner run the whole program as he sees fit. WOW would that be an accomplishment in itself.
I would hope that Coach Shaner take a good look at improving on scrimmages looking for competition more fitting.
No matter what they do this coming season will be an improvement!!!!!!!!!!!!
The problem for Niles is and has been the schedule. This isn't a top program anymore and hasn't been for decades. The city lacks athletes. They should be playing a dumbed down schedule if you want results as in the "glory days". Some of the AAC teams can be had because they are badly over rated ( cough,cough.. Howland ) or weak ( Beaver Local). Play a weaker schedule, get a couple of wins against AAC schools and have winning seasons. Thats the best you should expect.

Niles doesn't lack athletes, the problem is their best athletes leave Niles and play elsewhere(Harding, JFK, Mooney, Howland, Ursuline). The new coaching staff has to establish building the program from the Middle school on up in order to secure those kids. If the new coaches can do that they can be successful.
Somebody is just out to start something. By saying Niles doesn't produce athletes you may as well rip Ursuline and the other schools mentioned too. If Niles athletes are good enough to start for the listed teams but Niles has no athletes, every team in the valley is lacks athletes.
Name a "star", not a player who played for another team other than Niles who was from Niles LAST SEASON. Don't talk about yesteryear and only talk about "stars", not players. Its been a long time since Niles produced position player D-I college athletes. And the schedule needs to be softer. Win against lesser teams and then build up.

Paladin1aa please seak attention elsewhere! You obviously do not know what you are talking about! And you are not worth the time!
Hopefully! with this new Coaching Staff coming an interest in playing football will pick back up and more will show up for lifting in a couple of weeks. Is is a fact in the past few years alot quit or didn't even bother due to who the present coach was. And it doesn't help that Yeager DID NOT look forward AT ALL to when Bailey was gone at QB. The few that are returning are good solid players and with good leadership will only get better! Coach Shaner will have his work cut out for him. And as long as the PowersThatBe leave him ALONE he can turn this thing around..might take a year or 2 but it will turn around! It it is TIME, Niles needs this BADLY!

Ursuline... Mooney!? If you are going to make a bold claim like that, you best be able to back it up.
I will give you a week to provide everyone with a list of student-athletes that currently live in Niles or previously lived in Niles that currently or have played at Ursuline or Mooney respectively.

Thank You.
To start off two of your starting offensive lineman went to Niles Middle schools, the Vasquez-Atkins twins.

Yes, I knew a couple went to Ursuline but who left for Mooney? People need to realize that Mooney is Mooney and Ursuline is Ursuline. We are not one school but we are always bunched together Mooney-Ursuline, I don't think their move was bad, 3 state titles and probably D1 offers. If it is as bad their as many say with politics, how can you blame kids or parents for leaving. Ursuline is by far a better choice than Howland and Harding right now.
With that said, Good Luck this year. I thought Shaner did the best he could do with everything he had to deal with. You all will be happy with him.

People asked for names, names were given, that's how it works. We didn't say they SHOULD have stayed in Niles, just answered somebody's question.
Also, there is a good lineman at Harding that is a Niles boy. I can't give you names but it was brought to my attention by solid sources.
For another question somebody asked... Niles isn't banging out the D-1 position player athletes like they used to but that is not necessary to be good. Niles can still produce some so you're wrong in saying they don't. Jared Sears and Nate Ganyard are recent position players that fit that mold. Jared went to a MAC school and although it all didn't work out for Nate, he had tons of D-1 interest.
this team has a lot back actually. the biggest loss will be dillon palmer. he played both ways for this team last year. barrett was a really good linebacker. bailey threw it better this year but lacked any leadership skills at all. those two will be easily replaced, but palmer?
Without question the best football player on the 2011 squad hands down Pat Barrett. Why will it be tough to replace Bailey - mainly because no one else got any snaps that amounted to anything and inexperience at that position could be a problem.
No running game this past season to speak of that offensive line has got to show a lot of improvement.
Who actually is coming back that saw some decent playing time? I know Saban, Duffy, Kramer, who else? Who will fill the QB slot?
That's what I was wondering. The QB slot will be a huge determining factor for how well the team may do next year. With the new and improved coaching staff I expect to see the line and Duffy do better. There is potential for a potent running attack.

dont include linemen as a strength right now, they received some high praise but it was yeager praise. and we know he was not a talent evaluator. i think two of the top three tacklers are returning on d, and am sure sanchez, a soph, lettered atthat inside backer. yuhas and paden will survive at qb. if you ask most nilesfans, any qb other than stepson bailey will be an upgrade
Many people believed the line had potential and good size. A lot of what I heard is that the lineman's technique was poor. Maybe a new coaching staff will get these guys blocking well and our running game can thrive. Quarterback is probably the toughest position to step into without experience. At the high school level it's sometimes tough for young quarterbacks to get much experience before they become starters.
Again just my opinion, big difference between the offensive and defensive line this past season. The Niles defensive line was heads ahead of the offensive line and I thought Marc Kramer was the best lineman Niles had and will be back. With proper coaching that young man will excel in 2012.
The QB situation lacks experience because I think AuntJ hit on it. There comes a time in the game when the starting QB has to come out and someone else goes in with enough time to do something rather than hand the ball off to a RB a couple times.
The Girard, Howland and Hubbard games were decided by half time and how much time did a backup QB get in those games.
Another position that may be sorely missed will be a placekicker. Not sure who is coming up but in my opinion Justin Evans did not receive enough credit and should have been at least All Trumbull County
Dillon Palmer in my opinion was the most overlooked player of 2011. He was Niles' most consistent play-maker on offense, and should have been more recognized in post-season awards.
NilesD is correct. Pat Barrett was the best overall player. He was a beast on defense, and will not be easily replaced. And yes, Evans was one of the top placekickers in the area, all divisions included. Don't know who will take his place, but the shoes will be extremely tough to fill. Niles has had an incredible run of very good kickers over the years, hopefully the streak continues.
WITHOUT QUESTION, the offensive line was extremely overrated and it has to improve if Niles is going to move forward in 2012. The running game was non-existent as the year went on. Numerous coaches commented that they would have loved to have had the players Niles had up front. It was my impression that opposing coaches felt Niles had the bodies and the potential on the O-line, but that they players weren't properly prepared to handle the position. Hopefully a year of experience and a new coaching staff will make a difference in '12.
nilesd, my point exactly. yeager really nominated some questionable choices for post season accolades. i think his vaunted offensive attack totaled 16 (4 poland and 12 salem) second half yards in two crucial losses, yet all anybody heard about were bailey, saban, and harris. these were offensve players only, but job preservation, or job promotion, most certainly was behind brads motives. palmer probably played more downs, and had more big playsthan anybody else. the defense will be the key. barrett, palmer, cox, and evans are all that is gone. yuhas and spencer were right bhind barrett in tackles and they both return

I understand what you are saying and I agree with it except the Mooney part. Who came to Mooney? My point was it is not Mooney-Ursuline, there is Mooney and there is Ursuline. So, who came to Mooney?
The team loses a few solid players but it happens every year to every team. None of the players graduating from Niles are impossible to replace. Niles was a 5-5 team, we weren't carried to a deep playoff run by any single player. Season accolades are fun to get and talk about but they mean nothing when it's all said and done. They are not going to get you national recognition or scholarships. Whoever Yeager gave accolades to, so be it, he is no longer the coach of Niles McKinley. I'm glad we made the coaching change, the players deserve it.

I don't know, I didn't make the original statement. I know of a player that went to WGH. I know of players that went to JFK, Howland and Ursuline. The other schools I personally don't know anything about.
The committee who hired this guy "supposedly" met on Dec. 16th in the very late afternoon to decide on the hire. Three hours before this "decision" was made I am told by a board member that Shaner has the job, no ifs ands or buts about it. The board member in detail tells me that the job was going to go to Parry but that a certain "segment" demanded that since their boy Lou West didn't get hired, then neither would Parry. (Bet you can all figure out who that was) That decision was made Thursday night. These words came straight from the horses mouth, and I posted this as such on Friday afternoon hours before the Four Cowards pretended to meet and make the final choice. Now we are already finding out about the kissing up and the friendships that existed and all the other BS. Until these scum are distanced from the program it has no hope of success.
Question for you traiblazer! What I don't understand is WHY! I mean WHY is the other segment so against Parry? If things did not work out for West why anyone other than Parry?
