Saw some very impressive indoor track times for Frosh Shaun Crawford. Think its pretty safe to say he is going to be big time before its all said and done.
Somewhat similar. Fallon is bigger than Burke, although not a big quarterback. Not as good of a runner, but can hurt you with his feet. Has shown flashes of being a solid passer, but consistency is a big issue. Basically he is a work in progress, as was Burke going into his senior year.
I don't think they're very alike at all. Burke is more like an old-style trickster point guard; quick, super clever, confident, makes great decisions quickly. An arm that is no more than adequate. At his best, I see Fallon as more of a dropback qb who can run.
I would agree on a few recent posts Re the 2011 Eagles football team...
1). A very talent rich team. A demanding schedule, a few injuries that hurt cohesiveness and identity throughout the season, and lack of undeveloped leadership at a few key positions cost the team an opportunity to repeat as champions.
2). The Eagles are in good hands with Finotti at the helm. He is a solid coach that hopefully continues to improve, is a positive addition to the school, and is a quality human being. He is a good role model for these young men.
3). Burke and Fallon are different athletes that managed the QB role differently and their skills are suited for different schemes.
Burke was a season "more" mature, is a better athlete, that enjoyed early season success that blossomed into game day confidence as the 2010 campaign progressed. He was much more suited to manage the game from the shotgun formation... as a dual threat, with deft ball handling skills, he had the ability to manage the offense in a no huddle scheme that placed pressure on opposing defenses.
Fallon had less game day experience, is a strong arm QB, that is not an exceptional athlete. He managed the team better and delivered more wins in a deliberate offense... a huddle between plays to ensure all 11 offensive teammates were on the same "page", under center getting a clear view of the defensive formation, and using play action off prior established running success to deliver an effective passing attack.
IMHO, here is where the squad failed throughout the season...
A). The coaching staff should have ID Fallon's and the team's strengths earlier in the 2011 season and changed schemes by week 3 to allow the team late season continuity and identity.
B). What happened to the occasional two-way performer? I would like to allow 22 different young men to have the opportunity to contribute every game for the high school experience of playing football, but if wins and championships are important, playing 1 or 2 talented athletes both ways can make a difference in games against quality opponents.
C.) Special teams. This team did not cover well on kick-offs and was willing to give away valuable field position to ensure they did not give up a TD on a run back. Both contests against Ignatius came down to special teams play... field position, a muffed punt, and giving the "nod" to a superior placekicker that resulted in FG wins in both games.
I do believe the Eagles are poised to do extremely well over the next decade. Talent, both academically and athletically, continues to enroll at the school and I feel Finotti will continue to develop as a HC and become a more effective game day coach.

Some very solid times indeed. I think Anthony Young has the fastest 60M in the state to date at 6.92, and Crawford has a personal best of 7.03 so far. Hopefully the staff can find creative ways to get the ball in the hands of these two next year. While Crawford's future is going to be on the defensive side of the ball at corner or safety, I just can't imagine not using him in some capacity on the offense at the high school level.
I'm sure the coaches will find ways to get playmakers the ball, I remember in '03 Haruki Nakamura barely came off the field, leading receiver, returned all kicks and punts, starting safety and played on kick coverages.
Nice article... Young, Crawford, and the balance of the athletes running indoor and outdoor track for the Eagles make the squad very capable of winning a championship(s).

Best of luck!
A state outdoor championship is certainly a possibility if Crawford can place high at state. Young is in good position to repeat at 200, as well as win the 100 (where he was the highest placing underclassman in last years 100 final). If we can put together a couple decent sprint relay teams and a few field events, that may be enough to secure a title. Usually a score in the mid to high 40's will put you in good position in the team race, unless there are any teams out there like some of Glenville squads of the early 2000's which scored in 60's and 70's.

Yep and a little amnesia here, but we had a soph take 8th in the discus last year, he can be a threat to score in both shot and disc.
I am glad the Eagles staff across all sports value the 2 sport athlete. A thread on the wrestling forum discusses the value of the same, specifically the football-wrestling relationship and its impact on the performance of the young man and the sport he participates in.
Many former Eagle football players have contributed mightily to the wrestling program's success over the years, and vice a versa. Developing a strong track program will hopefully have a positive impact on other athletic programs at SEHS... specifically football.
Congratulations to the Eagles hockey team for beating Ignatius today in the district finals to advance to the frozen four. Good luck in pursuit of championship number 12.

Iggy Transfer News--Star forward is transfering to Iggy.
A report from several sources indicate that Iggy has recruited a star forward from an Oregon Jesuit school, he is currently a Junior. He holds the state record for goals scored. The hockey player is moving to Iggy for academic purposes only and is going to live in the Hope House.

Such a lack of imagination and wit. Very atypical of the other Ed's posters here.
In some football-related news, the Eagles won the state indoor track championship behind a few record setting performances. Anthony Young took first in the 60M (6.82), 200M (21.34), and triple jump (45-01), setting meet records in the first two. Freshman Shaun Crawford was second in the 60M (6.95) and third in the 200M (22.10). Junior Aaron Zedella set a meet record taking first in the weight throw (72-07) and finished third in the shot (58-03).
Others scoring points included the 4x800 (8th), 4x400 (3rd), and sophomore Steele Wasik went 6-07 in the high jump to finish second.
I apologize for the ignorance but I'm just curious is indoor track just the winterized version of track and field or are there different factors between the two?

Essentially the same, but indoor track has a few different events. There is no 100 meter dash, 4x100 relay, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, or discus in indoor track. Instead, they have the 60 meter dash, 60 meter hurdles, weight throw, and triple jump. The indoor state meet is conducted by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC), and is not sanctioned by the OHSAA as are the outdoor games. The OATCCC began putting on the state indoor meet in 2005.
One big difference is that most teams don't compete in indoor track. Others send athletes in one or two events (their best). There's no doubt, however, that St. Ed's has a collection of impressive athletes and it bodes well for the spring.

Yes, that is correct, but most of the big schools with reputable track programs do. This past indoor state meet had nearly 300 schools represented. It is more individualized than outdoor track, however. And to my knowledge, there are no qualifying meets (districts, regionals, etc.) for the indoor state meet as there are in outdoor track. I believe participation is as simple as signing your athlete(s) up.

In some recruiting news, Solomon Warfield has been on fire lately while making his spring break trip around the Big Ten picking up offers from Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan State in addition to existing offers from West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Arizona.
Lavonte Robinson picked up an offer from Toledo as well.

Great news for those two! Does Solomon run track as well?
I think he did in years past, but I heard a torn pectoral has kept him out this year. And I believe he is hitting the camp circuit this offseason rather than running track.
Final tonight. St. Ed "A" (varsity) rugby 31 St. Ignatius "A" varsity rugby 6. St Ignatius "B" (JV) rugby 21 St. Ed "B" (JV) 5.
On the varsity level St. Ed dominated St. "I" in the 2nd half. St Ed is a physical/speed team that wears teams down. To St. I's credit, they played smart and held an early 3-0 lead. St. "I" could play with, and even beat St. Ed, if they can find a way to stay with them, but time will tell. The St. "I" JV team beat our "B" team handily, but we can play with them if we improve our tackling and kicking.
Why is this in the football thread? Well there's no Yappi rugby thread and when St. Ed is looking for linemen next year, (And they will be looking), the rugby program has them. These kids are really tough and play hard with great coaches. For the record, I saw no St. Ed or St. I football coaches at tonight's match. Too bad, these kids could really help.
