Bringing in a Toledo team to Bedford would be a nice trick, but of your two suggestions, I suspect that we'll be taking a road trip somewhere to the ends of the state.
It's funny how time changes things, in years past, we had played Toledo Whitmer. (sp) At least to my best recollection.
Yes we did play Whitmer but there are a dozen or so feeder parishes with 10 miles of the school that are now closed since those days. Times do change...
Jaylen Funches gets an offer from Toledo. While this will be a young team in '12 the OT spot should be solid with Jaylen and Peter Cvijanovic holding down those spots. Add in a couple solid Sophs and maybe the OL will be a position of strength in '12. Now that DL....

Playing Big Red in week two should be worth some Harbin points with a victory but there is the factor of the "twelfth man" and a well seasoned great coaching staff. It is a tough venue to travel to, so hopefully it is a "home - and - home" series.
As a Big Red grad and fan, I would love to see a long-term relationship happen between us and Benny. We need a good rival. If this game materializes this year, I promise to fly in from Seattle where I live to see the game. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
If the game this year is in Steubenville, I urge you to bring as many fans as you can. The stadium is huge, so there is plenty of room for all you wish to bring. It is one of the nicest football facilities in Ohio. However, there is a reason why it is called Death Valley. We have only lost three games there in the past ten years (and we play mostly home games). And when the fog rolls in from the adjoining cemetery, it gives the place an eery atmosphere. You'll love it!

Love Seattle, go there on business and love the vibe of the city.

Is this confirmed? I too would like to see a home and home but I just don't see it happening. Also the back to back roadies with Boardman and Steubenville will be tough on a very young team, .500 is the best to hope for in '12.
From some inside sources from the abbey, the Bengals will play in "Death Valley" the second week of the season. Not sure about any other commitments but heard that the game is on for the second week with Big Red.
When did the Abbey become interested in football? I don't doubt you Mr. Soul but I think it's funny that a football tip was received from someone inside the Abbey.
I don't like the idea of playing two traditionally tough teams on the road (Boardman being the other team) to start the season when our program needs to win as many games as possible in what I would call a rebuuilding year.
When has the abbey not been interested in football??
I guess you don't know much about the monks and the abbey community?!
I think CleBen has a pretty good understanding of thow he Monks work. Some care but there are others who really don't care, these are the same guys who were bitching about building the practice field.
Nonetheless I think Coach Malbasa is taking this game for three reasons:
1) $s
2) Slim pickings to fill that week.
3) $s
I sure hope we are getting a good pay day because I see a blow out loss this year. Big Red fans have a very long memory and the last time they saw Benny the Bengals were running up the score and Ray Williams was hot dogging it. Also very worried that some kids will have the deer caught in a head lights look and get run out of the stadium once they hit the field and see that stupid fire breathing horse, this is not the meadow at NDCL.
As Auggie said, there are some monks at the Abbey who are interested about football and some who aren't. There are some monks there who have no direct involvement with the school.
I did not say they don't support football because I'm sure that even the non-football-interested monks see some value to it.

You dare pick on the pony?
I agree though... it's a good place to get those jitters out before the playoffs. Harding stadium will be a rockin' for that one.
From sources inside the Big Red community, there will be several sophomores probably starting or seeing a lot of playing time this coming season. Hopefully that may level the playing field for us.
First thing that came to mind for me, if possible, Reno will use this as a "pay-back" for the last time we met. Hope we can keep it close. The atmosphere at the stadium kind of sucks for the visiting team. The visiting bleachers are small compared to the home side. There are season ticket holders on the visiting side of the field. The horse gets annoying after a very short while. The fans actually do some form of unified cheering with the cheer leaders which is also annoying. The band seems to play the whole game which gets to be "old". I sat on the Big Red side wearing my Benedictine hat a year or so after the beating we gave them. I got some stairs but overall the fans were civil to me even though I was wearing my hat. It is a great venue for a Big Red fan but it will suck to drive that far and be in that kind of environment!

That's why we call it Death Valley! You forgot to mention the fog that rolls in from the cemetery.

I don't really know how these things work - what would be considered a good pay day? (although I suppose this depends on whether or not its a home/home and the length of the contract as well)
My Senior year, Benedictine came to Harding Stadium, They had an awesome quarterback, he ran the option better than anyone I have ever seen at that time. We barely won 13-12. I got that from roll red roll, I'm remembered they came here, couldn't remember the score.

You forgot to mention the absurdly small space behind the visiting teams bench.
The only good feeling there for a visiting fan... is winning. Boy is it quiet.

Best player on that team was probably lineman Predrag Jones, he played for Illinois. Benny never really ran an option under Bossu, at that time they were still a USC style deep I. The QB was Joe Rosalina; a paisan with a name like that usually is not an option guy unless you are from Mooney. CleBen can opinion on that game more then me. I want to say there was a crucial INT at some point too.
This is just not another game for Coach Malbasa. His family is from Steubenville and he grew up as a huge Big Red fan. He has been to many games over the years at Death Valley and I was sure as soon as he got the Benedictine job that a game would soon be on the schedule. This will be a fun evening. Yes, the visitor side is much smaller than the home stands, but the seating for the Bennies will be more than ample. Make the short 2 hour drive and see a great high school game.
