Barberton wrestling

Barberton finished 5-0 in ther team dual tournament at Cuyahoga falls. After graduating a solid senior class and a team that went 20-2 (only losing to Wadsworth and state champion Parkersburg South WV), the re-building process is under way, but with some great juniors and a few seniors, this squad is maturing fast. Fehr, Shump, Tschantz, Rowe, Rice and Blain going un-defeated. They beat Canfield and C. Falls pretty soundly, to name a few.

At which weights were the above mentioned wrestlers?

Tri-Match...Thursday night

Barberton beat Madison 31-19 and Notre Dame Cathedral-Latin 69-6.
They wrestled in Madison, where the crowd was very raucus and team points were deducted, along with some spectators being escorted out of the gym. Rowe pinned Madison's wrestler at 220, and you will have to forgive me with his name, but I understand he was ranked 5th in the state, by various polls. B-town stands at 7-0 in duels.

Brecksville prediction for Wads Larry

I think B-town will have a legit, 4-5 placers. I think they will be in the top 10, in team standings.
possible placers.....
120-shump (sq 2011)
126- fehr (sq 2009)
152-rice (dq 2011 and deis tourny 2nd place)
198-tschantz (dq 2011/state alt)
220-rowe (dq 2011/ state alt)
could have some surprises.
Brecksville and Wadsworth will be tough "head to head" matches.

I miss Barberton from my Suburban League perspective. Fans at their wonderful gym always treated me well though I wore my Wadsworth cap. Perhaps they could sense fond memories of having lived 4 years in Barberton during the Bodnar (I know, wrong sport) era.

Brecksville update for B-town

I thought Barberton would have 4-5 placers as stated in a prior comment.
I had listed Shump, Rice, Tschantz, Rowe, and Fehr. All but one are still alive.
Fehr is in the semis..beating 2x state placer Spangler, from Keystone.
Shump is out...huge upset.
Rice, Tschantz, Rowe are wrestling in the consis, all lost in the quarters.

Was Shump sick or injured or did he get injured because not only got pinned in 1st match by a kid he has beaten several times, but then goes out and loses 1st match in concy`s? Kid is a much better wrestler than that and unless he has lost interest I cannot imagine him not placing in this tourney!

I would ask someone who was there. I do not want to speculate. I am at work and getting results from people, that were, and are there, now.

I saw the match vs. Zollinger. It looked like Shump completely ran out of gas in the middle of the second period. He got the take down in the first period and Zollinger could not get out to get a point. Zollinger picked down for the second period and Shump was riding tuff for about a minute. They went out of bounds and Shump looked like he was spent. Zollinger escaped pretty shortly after the whistle. Zollinger took a shot and it did not look like Shump tried to get away. Zollinger took him down and put him to his back almost immediately.

I did not see the second match, but I was pretty surprised to see him go 2 and out. I wondered too if maybe he was sick or if he just had an off day.

Tschantz, Rowe, and Fehr are placing....Rice fell one match short. Fehr is in the finals. He is an exceptional wrestler and proving so, this year.

Varsity will be "river wrestling", close to West Virginia, this weekend. Another shot at Parkersburg WV-state champs, who haven't lost a duel match in 70 straight.

You folks gave them a run for their money last year if I'm correct.

whiz duals

Well... for the 4th year in a row, Barberton goes 9-1, losing to Parkersburg South WV...40-24 in the championship. Shump was back on track going undefeated and crushing the Parkersburg state placer 10-4. Cobey Fehr had a sensational weekend beating state runner-up Jeremy Border...10-4, from Caldwell, and losing a controversial UTB 2-1 to 3 soon to be 4xstate champ jeffries from Parkersburg. Both sides had to be split up on opposite sides of the gym and stoppage of the match. Team points were deducted. Fehr seemingly had 2 leg in scoot around take downs, only to have the ref wave them off...the place went nuts. The rest of the team battled a team that had 10 state qualifiers and 4 placers. Barberton's dual record goes to 16-1.

Coachluigi, Obviously you were not there. The only one who thought there was controversy were some of the Barberton folks. There were two referee's doing the match and a third sitting mat side, although I am sure some of your obnoxious fans were closer to the mat and thought they were more skilled to make the calls. Sort of like your coaches who stated in your local paper how Jeffrey just nipped Fehr by a point in the past. Last year Jeffrey won (score 6-3, Jeffrey cut him once for a takedown). The year before Jeffret won 10-3 with two stalling warnings against Ferh. This year the calls were close but called correctly just as the stalling warning was made against Fehr again. The officials are to be commended for having to tolerate such behavior some of the Barberton crowd. Not sure what the home court advantage comment is but if it was directed toward South, I believe Barberton is closer to Dresden than Parkersburg is. This was the fifth time South beat Barberton in the last four years. Enough said.

Thanks for the info, but I was there. The calls that were made, were very close, I will give you that, but I thought at least one of the takedowns at the buzzer, were ligit. It was a leg in scoot around and Cobey had the near side ankle hooked, and was lifting jeffries off the mat in the crotch. That's control and a takedown up North. But, no matter, it showed Fehr (state qualifier), he can hang with a soon to be 4x state champ. I have seen every Barberton/Parkersburg match, I love the stat lady (and her new hair color..lol, we have sat next to eachother for years keeping stats.) I also like Jeffries and his mom and dad. I congratulated the coaching staff and fans. You have a great team, no doubt, but probably not a top 5 team in Ohio. Judging by your "ironman" results. Good luck, though, thanks for the post.
