Well so was Strobel. But they don't really fit the mold of the typical Mentor basketball player. And those are more of football guys playing basketball. I was referring to the basketball guys who happen to come over for football.
I may be dense, but I don't see the difference. Basketball players playing football or football players who play basketball. I don't think any of the kids who played either sport were completely new to the other.
To CatAlum's comment, it'd be very tough to convince some of the other larger boys at Mentor to "C'mon out for football to play the D'line or O-Line." Everybody wants the ball.
I doubt we'll see Kade McClure at WR anytime soon. He''ll back up Mitch tilll he's a senior. He's more of a pocket passer.

If that is really the case then Mentor will have a very difficult time winning a state championship. Of course everybody in an ideal world wants the glory of having the ball. But the team needs big boys to be doing their part on the line as well. The offensive line may not be a glorified position, but Mentor has had more DI offers to linemen (Matas, Demell, Hale, Bednar, Strobel, Hanley) than the skill positions.
St Ignatius has put top athletes at key positions and it makes a difference. Mentor could use some big strong athletes at DE and LB to be difference makers for this team. Berger and Maddox are good sized athletes that could fill that role in 2012.
Reason Mentor lost this year was in large part due to the woes of the offensive line. In the losses to Twinsburg and St Ignatius, the Oline played horrible and Mitch was running for his life the entire night. Eric Williams was able to sit back and had all day to throw in the Ignatius game. For Mentor to finally win it all, they must have a good Oline and a Dline that can rush the passer. For as much acclaim as the Dline got in the preseason, QB's had a ton of time to throw in most games.
Mentors skill players will be absolutely terrific again...they will always score points. Will they ever have enough on the defensive side to win it all?
And a guy in the other thread said Camden from Georgia would be our opponent. There are a lot of rumors out there. I have said for awhile that this would be the year to play on an ESPN game if they were ever going to do it. Have Trubisky and Fritts who could be BCS recruits this year and next. Not to many years do we have players like that to showcase.
St Eds would be about the first opponent possible. They are either good and beat you or they get pummeled by their hard schedule many of times when you can beat them. Plus they don't bring a huge crowd for a home game on top of that. And the only private other than Ignatius that should even be considered is Lake Catholic. LC/Ignatius are no problem but others should be used in emergency only. I think they can find someone other than St Eds to play.
EDIT: And Eds is listed as having Akron Buchtel in week 2 with only week 4 open. That rumor seems like bs. Where did you hear it?

From a football dad who said Triv discussed it at a recent Mentor Redline Club mtg. He said the 2012 Herbstreit Classic was in the works for week #2, but that they're having some financial trouble & what not...so Mentor backed out, recognizing they need to lock up a week 2 opponent sooner rather than later...
Or Triv could have just mentioned a team that they would get last minute. I don't think Eds is the type to schedule a game and then back out of it. If Buchtel is indeed scheduled in week 2, they probably already had to work enough to get them to play against them.
Eds would be just a stupid scheduling move. Lake Catholic would bring in more money all years and many of times more harbins if Mentor can beat them.
EDIT: The HS Sports. net site has Eds schedule completely filled. So unless Buchtel cancels, that rumor doesn't seem possible

Normally I would prefer a local game versus participating in one of the national events like Herbstreit, but this would be a nice showcase for the team - and specifically Trubisky. It happens that I will be out of town Friday through early Sunday on Labor Day weekend (Week 2), so from that stand point it would also be a plus to have the game at OSU on Sunday or Monday as I could see the game live - whether in person or on TV.
Apparently in Week 2 Mentor will be traveling to Erie, PA to play Erie, McDowell. Don't remember us going out of state often if at all, but the trip to Erie isn't bad. I get there in 1 hr 15 going to the Casino so it is no worse than going to Canton, Akron, Warren, Massillon etc.
That Erie team is apparently scheduling both Mentor and St Eds if hssports.net is correct. Maybe they have something to offer this coming season?
If this is correct (and it usually is as our AD keeps it very current), then we are done for 2012 and 2013. According to this site, Erie McDowell comes to Mentor in week 1 in 2013. St Ignatius would be week 2 instead of 3 and Euclid week 3 instead of 1.
McDowell has like 2500 kids apparently so it seems to be a pretty big public school. That is all I know so far about them.

I don't really care for filling the open date with McDowell. I don't know what the other options were, so I can't say for sure which I would trade it for. Obviously we all want to see Mentor/Lake. But the powers that be seem to believe that this is truly the most dangerous high school football atmosphere in the state. Anybody else ever heard of a football rivalry being ended?
It was mentioned on a different thread that Steubenville was open. That would have been neat to schedule them. The Herbstreit Challenge was also a possibility. I just don't get a home and home with a team from PA. It sounds like a desperate move considering Mentor's scheduling history, so they must have been desperate.
I will be out of town in Week 2, so I wasn't going to be able to see the game no matter the opponent - but for Mentor's sake I just don't get it. McDowell might be a big school, but are they any good?
I don't mind the matchup. It is a 2 year deal and a fresh opponent. We go there this year (only like 1 hr 15 away) and then they come here in 2013. It isn't like we are signing on for them as a regular opponent.
Since Massillon is going the local route for 2 games and then need to make room for WGH (since they have LEL for 7 weeks), they don't seem to be an option. Teams like Solon, Strongsville and Brunswick are already in our league now. Ignatius/Euclid are good partners and will probably go on well into the future.
Mentor will be fine finding one opponent a year but I don't mind games like this to experience a new stadium and see a fresh opponent.
As for Lake Catholic, that isn't a historic rivalry. The teams played 5 games total in the history of football for the schools. The city doesn't like the game and there are many barriers to it ever being played. Most feel it isn't worth the trouble just for a hs football game. But it isn't like they are cancelling McKinley/Massillon or Eds/Ignatius here. Euclid is more of a historic rivalry than LC.

The drive isn't what bothers me as much as the opponent. I would rather play an Ohio team. A fresh opponent is nice, but I would like it to be a fresh Ohio opponent.
Euclid may be a historical opponent, but they are not a rival. When you look at rivalries, you do consider history. But you also consider location of the schools, excitement of the game, how much it means to players/fans, and the significance (computer point wise, conference race, etc.) of the actual game. Mentor/Euclid has none of that.
Plus the two aren't even in the same league anymore, so anything resembling a rivalry is over. I don't see the point in scheduling Euclid unless Mentor is looking for a team they can beat 8 or 9 out of 10 times. Solon is Mentor's rival in football now.
Its just too bad the players, fans, and communities are robbed of an exciting rivalry with Lake Catholic because of the fear of what the small minority will do. They have let the memories of high school punks who got into fights ten years ago win and the majority of fans who know how to control themselves lose.
I just can't consider a team we have played 5 total times to be more of a rival than a team we have been playing for decades across various leagues and such. I know they are in the same city as us but they are a private school in a lower division that has very little history with us in football. It isn't like it was some traditional rivalry that was all of a sudden cancelled.
I would call the schools rivals overall but I have a hard time calling them a football rival until the game comes back and becomes a regular thing.
They are a very solid PA program that has produced alot of talent the last 5 or 6 years. They will not be at the skill level of a Mentor but usually has good size and plays hard. Saw them in PA state playoffs a few times. Probably a better game than Mentor can find in Ohio at this late a date.
They may not be good for their typical win amount this year with Mooney, Ed's, Ignatius, and Mentor on the schedule.
All the more reason for Mentor NOT to schedule them. McDowell has been good for a couple losses just in PA, let alone facing that juggernaut of Ohio. Since Mentor was the last of the four to schedule McDowell, this really makes little sense. This could be a four team. I would rather take my chances playing North (who is open Week 2) for a one-year contract at Mentor and then work on filling 2013 with more notice. That would serve the purpose of filling an open date, getting a home game, a big ticket since its a local opponent, and North is improving enough that it isn't crazy for them to get 4 or 5 wins...even without Gresko.
Good luck getting North to schedule that game. It has to go both ways. Something tells me they wouldn't be psyched about getting clobbered in week 2...
Tim Warsinskey ranks the top 13 PD area players (from a recruiting perspective) in the 2013 class:
Quote:
2. Mitch Trubisky, Mentor
Quarterback, 6-3, 200
Scouting report: Has offers from several MAC schools. A bigger, stronger, faster version of 2007 Mr. Football winner Bart Tanski. Compiled 55 touchdowns and more than 4,440 yards combined passing and rushing in high-octane spread offense. He also threw 18 interceptions.
Am I to conclude from this that Trubisky is not currently on the radar of Ohio State or schools at that level?
An offer and being on the radar are 2 different things. Considering he has been invited to multiple OSU games already, I'll say he is on their radar. Most juniors don't get huge offers until after the school year. Sure they will have little visits and such but you hear about a lot of the incoming senior class starting to commit after the school year through the summer.
That wasn't intended as a slam on the kid. I'm just wondering...what's the current view on him? Does the upper half of the Big 10 like him? Is he more like an Indiana, Purdue guy? MAC?
