Friday 8/24 vs. Euclid High School
Friday 8/31 at Erie McDowell
Saturday 9/8 @ St. Ignatius High School
Friday 9/14 vs. Mayfield High School
Friday 9/21 @ Parma High School
Friday 9/28 @ Brunswick High School
Friday 10/5 vs. Solon High School
Friday 10/12 @. Medina High School
Friday 10/19 vs Strongsville High School
Friday 10/26 vs. Twinsburg High School
Conference Thoughts:
I expect Solon and Twinsburg to still be very good opponents although Solon loses a lot from a great class. Strongsville should improve after a pretty down year. Brunswick should at least be solid. Medina may be at the bottom of the conference...
Nonconference Thoughts:
Euclid has become a natural week 1 opponent due to the rivalry that has gone on across a few leagues. St. Ignatius in week 2 or 3 is a game both schools like. The week 2 opponent will be posted when it is confirmed, but I have heard some things.
Key Returning Starters

DL: Ian Gliesman
LB: Kurt Laseak
LB/S: Regis Coustillac
S: Nick Kirschner
CB:Logan Urban
The year should largely depend on the defense. RB's will be playing more next year imo. Nick Kovach will be a senior and showed some signs as a junior. I don't know why he wasn't used more. RB's like Dan Wenzel and Eddie Daughtery could be used. Will just have to see who they find for the D.
Disclaimer: This is the official thread for team discussion on Mentor. There will be plenty of game threads and other threads on them if you want to troll. Rival fans are of course welcome but let's stick to questions on Mentor, comments on Mentor games etc. No need to bash the team or school or incite fighting as you have a ton of other threads on here that are available to do that in.

Mitch Trubisky along with Kareem Hunt receive the Tony Fisher award as the best player in the News Herald coverage area. Trubisky received player of the year in the district voting, but I have no problem with seeing Hunt split the award here. Both had fantastic years and congrats to both juniors. Hope they both improve even more in their senior seasons.
Very good season overall. Most of the Mentor people I talked to preseason expected the playoffs but didn't think Mentor would be a threat to win the region. Mentor beat Solon twice and swept the entire rest of the NOC on their schedule except Twinsburg. Beat Ignatius during the first half of the year and also Ursuline. They were AP #1 for a couple weeks before the loss to Twinsburg at the end of the year. Battled against Ignatius and made it a tight game when it could have been a blowout. No shame in losing in the regional final and being one of the last 8 in the playoffs.
I thought they were a threat from the middle of the season on and at times thought 2011 could be the year. Towards the end though, my expectations were downgraded some and I really thought Whitmer would have been the favorite against us. I did think we had a chance against Iggy but hey the better team won. Great season to the past team nonetheless.
I am sure other guys who watch the lower levels can elaborate on players coming up this year. I just know Tyler Sullens at DT and McMahon at LB should be contributors. I haven't watched any middle school, freshman or JV games since I was in middle school myself. Will need them to enlighten me in the offseason and as we get closer to the far off new football season.

There is no doubt this will be one of the better offenses in NE Ohio, but they may have to score a heck of a lot of points to be anywhere near as successful as this year, because the D is going to struggle, at least early. There should be some talent on D, but virtually no experience, which usually is a recipe for a tough start. Teams are also going to have a much better understanding of their 5-wide system, and have a better idea of how to stop it/slow it down. Iggy gave everyone a blueprint of how to shut this offense down. Granted, you have to have the players and talent to do what they did, but if you have good athletes, you need to blitz the heck out of Mentor's O, and live in man coverage, but be able to guess at the right times and sit in a soft zone for the screens that would come next. One thing is for sure...Trubisky and Kareem Hunt from Willoughby South should be in a battle for a whole lot of postseason awards next season, possibly including Mr. Football Ohio.

I think it will be an exciting year in 2012. Trubisky and co. will probably be relied upon to score more and play into the fourth quarter because of an inexperienced defense. I think Coach Triv will adjust his offense to what he has. Probably four wide outs and one running back. The additional player in the backfield will help to block any blitzing LBs and allow Mitch to do what he does best. Iafalice (a starter early on) and McMahon saw considerable action and should be ready to step in. Two other freshmen have been mentioned to help on defense next year. Things can change alot in one year. Hopefully, everyone stays with it and keeps working hard.

I would honestly be surprised if they ran the 5 wide offense next year. That was a 1 year offense so I am not sure why many think it is going to become a staple. Mentor was a running offense in 2009 and 2010. 2 talented RB's in Mike Korecz and Ricky Hanzlik dictated that to make sense. Triv usually bases the offense around the talent level on the team. Last year there just happened to be a lot of WR's and no standout RB's.
Other RB's in the past 10 years include Matt Lieb, Tom Worden, Bill Deitman etc. Mentor usually has a competent RB back there and 4 WR's. I think with some of the names listed and a few others that we should be able to find one again for 2012.

Key returning players are good to have. But Cam Kavan should be an inspiration for any JV/Freshman team player. He went from playing primarily JV as a junior to leading the area in receiving as a senior and an all-district and certainly all-state selection. It would be nice to have a few players like that, especially on defense.
On defense, the number of spots opened up by graduation (starting & backup), will offer plenty of opportunity for JV & Freshmen for next year. The rising players will have to grow up fast. I'll probably post a projected list later this week.
The 2012 Cardinals will be in the mold of the 2007 team - great offense with an All-Ohio QB, fantastic WR's, an unproven RB and defense. In 2007 the unproven RB turned out to be a talented junior in Tom Worden. The 2007 defense was unheralded, but there were a few gems that made some big plays (Ben Pike, Nick Koshiol, Tim Moore, Nick Krantz).
Sophomores and juniors that contributed on defense this year (either as regular starters, one-time starters, or rotation players) are DT Tyler Sullens, LB Justin McMahon, LB Kent Berger, LB Joe Iafelice, CB Jaylen Dowdy, FS Reese Armstrong. That group and more will be counted on to take big steps forward if the team is to make any kind of run similar to the 2007 team.

I look forward to hearing that. You and others told us some names to watch in the other thread, but I would like a potential depth chart on the defensive side of the ball. I never watch the lower levels so I have no idea who is coming up to be starters at the varsity level.
Was there really a ridiculous rumor that Triv could leave Mentor to be Urban Meyer's QB coach? Or did the poster in that thread just hear wrong? Makes no sense at all as Triv played DB in college and isn't really known to be the QB groomer. But with Cleveland radio being so bad, I am interested if anyone else heard that over the airwaves.

The freshmen team was 8-2 and had three two-way starters: JD Matsko (RB, LB), Kyle Tankovich (WR, CB/S), Cole Tomko (WR,S). Matsko has a good chance to contribute at LB. Tankovich is a better offensive player. Tomko is a playmaker and may be a contributor on defense. Nico Lautanen- Anthony's brother - has good size and may contribute on the d-line next year. Trevor Morrison (no relation to Mitch Morrison) has good size and played DL also.

Other freshmen that may contribute: Eddie Daugherty will probably start next year on kickoffs opposite Senior Leshawn Moore. He may even get some carries as a RB also. Nick Cole played LB but excelled on special teams, which may be his ticket to get on the field next year.

The JV team had a good year with a record of 8-1-1 (I believe). They started plenty of juniors who, along with some good sophomores, should be ready to make an impact next year. Some offensive backups could possibly be moved to LB or DB to get on the field. In '07 Wardon started the year on defense and moved to RB after game 1 and was all-state for two years. Maybe the opposite, switching a player or two from O to D may work next year.

I hope that is not true - Mentor probably couldn't match OSU's salary offer!
Coach Triv did mention to this year's freshmen that he probably would coach at least until they are seniors. Mentor should be a factor in Region 1 for the next three years.
Nice to see Trubisky, Kavan, Lautanen, Derezic, Stobel, Laseak, and Kirschner on the News Herald first team, Fritts, Krizancic, Tanski, Coustallic, and Hanley on the second team, Ashton and Koshiol on honor roll. Unfortunately, many of our players are better than many players on the three teams but that's what happens when the newspaper wants each school represented. Great year Cardinals!
The wide receivers should be fine next year. Fritts and Krizancic will be the main targets. Plavcan will be 100% by the end of the school year and Foreman will be much better with a full year of football under his belt. The RB competition could be wide open next year with Kovach, Wenzel, and Daugherty. Kovach, a senior next year, right now is the best with the most exprience. Wenzel, next year a junior, is strong and runs hard and breaks tackles. Daugherty, a sophomore next year, has a chance to be the best of the three if he grows.
I'm assuming that was Kent Berger wearing #49 and playing DE. Does anyone know who #13 is? He got some playing time in the Ignatius game as a LB/S, and I was wondering if he's back next year.
Thanks for the info everyone! I'm hoping there's some talent coming up on the defensive side of the ball b/c there's a lot of holes to fill.
Here's my early depth chart for next year - feel free to fill in the blanks:

Matsko will probably be on defense, possibly LB or used in Nickel packages. I wonder if Krizancic will play some DB next year since that is mainly what he did as a freshman.
There are some more freshmen that I don't know much about who can sneak into some of these spots as well.
If you're a Mentor football player, pay no attention to this. These guys are just guessing. They know less than it appears. Work hard, eat well, sleep a lot, lift, run, listen to your coaches...GROW. You may jump ahead of three people.
Um it's an attempt at showing who will be up for spots in 2012. Of course people can move up or work their way in. That may be the most obvious post you have ever made on here. Obviously people will talk about a depth chart in a thread for next season.
Thanks to Millbarge and cardz1 for bringing some names to the table.

Question: Are you a parent?
I know exactly what they're doing...nothing wrong with it. I also know a fair amount about the demented teenage mind and I'm offering those young knuckle-heads some advice. I actually care about them a little bit.
Pretty much anything after Trubisky is potentially up for change. Of course we all know that lots can change. Injuries, grades, even a rare transfer in the public school system could occur. Since none of us are on the staff, we'll never know for sure until they hit the field in week one. Until then, it is fun to talk about what may be coming down the pipeline.
Of course things can change. I don't think we are hurting kid's feelings by talking about it either. More ridiculous babble from CatAlum. Go into every team thread talking about a depth chart and post your little message though. Sure they would love to hear it too...
