In this Season of Giving, we are seeking donations to buy the following:
* A loose fitting pair of cargo shorts for Joe Yost;
* Sensitivity training sessions for Flossie;
* Marriage counseling for the Powers;
* A red tipped cane and dark glasses for Joe Howard;
* Mouthwash for George Thomas;
* A year's supply of Scott's Turfbuilder for the APS fields.
Won't you please consider supporting this noble cause? Please send your cash and checks to Sal's Barbershop, C/O North Viking.
If your check bounces Sal will send Mad Mario and Looney Lou to see you.
See Clark! I told you there would be confusion! And judging by Cruiseman's posts he's brighter than most people downtown. That's not much of a compliment, but there it is.
They did last year. No one cared. In an ultimate example of the Akron City Series, "Debo" Brown from North (the big boy they put at runningback) last year was a former East player who was playing for his fourth city team in 4 years. Flossie called foul when kids left his program and he darn near lost his job and teaching license over the ordeal. Beasley keeps his mouth shut, kids come and go, and his program stinks. The APS is a mess and it starts directly with the man standing at the top.
FYI does everyone know that the Firestone 4 all went back to Buchtel right after football season was over???
Until David James steps in and makes all of the Firstone 4 eligible to participate at Buchtel in any sport they wish, because they are being "disenfranchised". What an absolute joke the city policy is on transferring, and it started wiuth Joe Howard turning a blind eye on it year after year, and then when he finally does something and puts his foot down, the Super steps in and makes something work somehow. Then, as soon as the football season is over, the kids l=go back to the school they wanted to attend. I hope David James enjoys how much of a donkey's he looks like from this situation! Oh, yeah, we are talking about an APS high-up, he has his head up his rear end while he collects that huge paycheck!
Well, they were never at Buchtel, but I have heard that they are there now. I also have heard that Otterman is back at SmEllet.
They were at Buchtel last year in the second half of the year. They left in the summer and as soon as the seaon ended they made the move back to Buchtel. I guess the animal program wasn't the right fit. They are in their 4th high school in less than a year! Firestone-Buchtel-Ellet-Buchtel in 10 months. That is educational continuity!

Oh snap! This whole thing has been and still is a stinky mess. Please check your shoes for poo!
All of the transferring kids and their parent(s) need look no further than the Dowdy kid from North as an example of why it is not necessary to transfer. That kid played on one of the worst city teams in history the last couple of years, yet D1 scouts found him. Coming up with creative transfer excuses, or moving your kid into an apartment across town, just to get him exposure is ridiculous. The only thing you are exposing is that as a parent you are a fool.

Exactly right, very few kids that are legit D1 prospects get missed anymore. The chances of a real D1 football talent being missed are pretty slim. Kids that are missed are usually late bloomers that hit a growth spurt after highschool If you play for a school like North and show and prove against the higher level teams you will be found out by someone.

It helps to have a coach that cares about his players and sees the potential in them even if they had a poor season. I believe that's the case with Dowdy. He saw that Laktash was going to do everything he could to help him. I'm sure that played a factor in him staying at North. There are too many coaches out there that just don't care and don't want to be bothered by college coaches.

Good point Irish02. North is lucky to have a guy like Lacktash that will work on behalf of the kids.
Not deminishing the efforts of coach Lacktash, lets make some points about that young man. Dowdy did as uch for himself as anyone, to his credit. First, he did the work in the classroom to get him eligible. Second, he prepared himself for the combines and camps and was noticed. Third, he did the work on the field. I applaud the young man for staying with the program at North when the chips were down. Congrats to him.
This Dowdy kid has the ability to be a real playmaker down there. It was nice to see him finish his years at North and be with his teammates and buddies, unlike all of the selfish, self-serving ones that jump ship all over the city. Reminds me a bit of the other kid a few years ago from North that was a really nice player and stayed. Cannoit remember his last name, but he was a 4 year starter there and he stuck it out through some tough years, too.
I think everyone knows this stuff went on before Howard took over in the APS athletic arena, but it became a total joke during his tenure, and reached a peak this last spring. Anything that require any work on his or the APS' part to verify anything other than a pulse on any of the kids transferring would be excessive. I hope that the shuffling throughout the city stops and we can maybe have a decent league again.
Anybody have the inside info on why Dowdy switched his commitment from Maryland to Cinci? He announced Maryland at the Thanksgiving day game, and a week later committed to Cinci.

I dunno, but I can probably find out. I know that Cinci's football program is in much better shape than Maryland's.

As far as the OHSAA is concerned, the repsonsibility to check and verify eligiblity is the repsonsibility of the individuals schools. There are AD's in APS that do not verify information until a day or two b4 the first game.
APS would love to have a turf field. Without lights, that is a cost of $800,000 and if you add lights, the total becomes 1.1 mil. Hell, they can't even get a levy passed. How are they going to get 1 mil for football?
I was disappointed about commitment to Maryland and he was advised wrongly. I knew he was going to de-commit along with 50% of fans at the all-star game five minutes after halftime. I'm told they did it to force a commitment out of Boise which never came but Cincy came calling. He was advised wrongly there and the game shouldn't have let it go down that way.

We were just as surprised to find out that Dowdy decommited to Maryland as well. We didn't find out about his change of heart until recently. Kids change their minds all the time. We wish him nothing but the best. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and enjoy a safe New Year!
I think most people know that individual achools are responsible for the checking of eligibility issues as far as the academics and the residency questions are concerned, but as far as looking inot the allegations of rcruiting, legal guardianship changes, changing of schools within the open enrollment period or allowing them to open enroll whenever they want, like downtown has permitted several times just within the last few years within the same family, etc, fall under the duties of downtown. Heck, the Super even made his personal plight to get those Firestone 4 eligible by any means possible.
As a mater of fact, I know for fact that in about 2002 or 2003 there was a former coach who offered to perform all of the eligibility checks for the entire APS system for all sports, and do it on a voluntary basis, meaning there would be no need to pay them. APS response, "No thanks." So, you see how great it has been going just by reading several of the articles in the paper last summer.
