Delaware Hayes uses all weapons in lightning-delayed win over Buckeye Valley

The Delaware Hayes Pacers scored touchdowns on defense and special teams in the first half, then scored on the offensive side in the second to defeat the Buckeye Valley Barons 37-8 in the 2009 version of the "Backyard Brawl" Friday at Gauthier Field in Delaware.
After a two hour, 13 minute lightning delay, Hayes (1-0) scored first just 1:27 into the contest when defensive back Eric Beale intercepted an Erik Wall pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.
Buckeye Valley (0-1) moved the ball well all night, but had trouble finishing off its drives. The Barons held a 141-75 advantage in total offense, but Wall was picked off twice in the opening half and three times in the game.
The Barons had a chance to get on the board on their final drive of the second quarter, but Hayes' special teams came up with another big play when Michael Corbett blocked Baron kicker Alex Marstiller's field goal attempt, and the Pacers' Jason Stowers returned the ball 70 yards for the touchdown as time expired.
The Pacers added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Hayes quarterback Kody Akers' 44-yard run set up the first score, when Tom Bankoske recovered a Pacer fumble in the end zone. On the first play of the next Hayes drive, slotback Vidal O'Connor took a pitch from Akers around the right side 62 yards for the second score.
Buckeye Valley got on the board late in the third, driving 70 yards on 11 plays, capped by tailback Cody Hughes' one-yard touchdown run. Kevan Green completed the two-point conversion pass to Clay Ungashick, putting the Barons behind 27-8.
But the Pacers held the ball for nearly eight minutes in the final quarter and held the Barons without another point the rest of the way. Hayes scored on a 33-yard Jamey Hackett field goal, then added a seven-yard touchdown run from backup quarterback Adam Rickard to close it out.
Hayes finished with 299 total yards, all on the ground, to Buckeye Valley's 255. O'Connor, fullback Jacob Naegele and Akers all finished with 83 yards rushing or more, O'Connor leading all rushers with 96 yards on nine carries. Naegele added 84 yards on 10 carries while Akers had 83 yards on 11 rushes.
Hughes led the Baron rushers, carrying 17 times for 61 yards. Wall completed 11-of-21 passes in the game for 141 yards, but was intercepted three times, once each by Beale, defensive back Dominic Cassan and linebacker Ponchi Rivera. Guy Reeb topped the Baron receivers with five catches for 86 yards.
Hayes hosts another Delaware County opponent, Lewis Center Olentangy, Friday at Gauthier Field. Buckeye Valley will open Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play Friday at Marion Elgin.
