Second Half Comeback Lifts Kettering Alter Over Dayton Chaminade Julienne 50-45

Second Half Comeback Lifts Alter Over Chaminade-Julienne

Slow third quarter doomed C-J

By Bryant Billing

FAIRBORN- One quarter can decide a game. That is what occurred in this game as well. Chaminade-Julienne scored only eight points in the second quarter, while the Alter Knights scored fifteen. In the end, that doomed the Chaminade-Julienne Eagles. Alter (17-7) went away with the 50-45 win, earning them a spot in the Dayton Division II regional final game.

The first quarter went slow.

Both teams played excellent zone defenses in the first quarter and successfully shut each other down on offense. C-J was able to make their shots late in the quarter to take a 10-6 lead at the end of the first.

The Knights were able to capitalize on C-J's breakdown on defense and made uncontested baskets underneath. C-J kept up with Alter in the second, though, as it was tied 21-21 at the of the second quarter.

Then the Knights made the last lead change of the game.

C-J came out lagging in the third quarter, and Alter capitalized. A Nick Royer three-pointer with 5:40 left gave Alter a 28-25 lead. Alter never relinquished that lead. Alter finished the third quarter on an 8-3 run.

C-J made one last attempt to comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was to little, to late for the Eagles. Alter went away with the 50-45 win.

This game was a typical GCL match-up. Alter proved to be the better defensive team and it resulted in their win. The Knights were able to contain C-J in the third quarter, and they built up their lead. C-J helped Alter in the third by shooting horrific. The Eagles only scored eight points in the third quarter.

C-J struggled offensively all throughout the game. A normal high-scorer on the team, Joe Staley (son of C-J head coach Joe Staley) scored only three points the entire game. It was a garbage three-pointer with time expiring on the clock.

Ryan Siggins was the leader on the floor for Alter. He was able to step and make a basket when Alter needed it. Siggins is very strong underneath and he is able to penetrate.

Siggins led the way for Alter with 16 points for the Knights. Jamarre White followed up with 12 points. Ryan Bass led C-J with 12 points.

The win was the tenth straight for Alter. The Knights now move on to play Graham (25-0, ranked fifth in the state in the final AP poll) in the Dayton Division II regional final. The game is scheduled for this Saturday, March 8, at 3:00. The game will be at the Nutter Center.

Individual Scoring: Chaminade-Julienne- Ryan Bass 12; V.J. Evans 6; Kurt Hess 10; Zack Kauth 9; Joe Staley 3; Joe Stabo 3; Chris Boddie 1. Alter- Nick Royer 9; Brian Dougherty 9; Jamarre White 12; Ryan Siggins 16; Trevor Heitz 4.
