Bill Dies Memorial - 1/18 and 1/19

It goes without saying but Brecksville is the prohibitive favorite. Canfield is strongly likely to finish second. I would say that some combination of Avon, Barberton, Brunswick, Copley, Highland, Midview, and Roottown are the next best teams (maybe Rootstown for third?)

In terms of individuals ...

106 - Saxton (Avon), Castro (Brecksville), Barber (Canfield), Haney (Highland), Yarbrough (Copley), Cravatos (Copley)

113 - Woods (West Holmes), Stanley (Brecksville), Edwards (Rootstown), Fletcher (Canfield), Dimos (Jackson), Pinc (Buckeye)

120 - Butler (Copley), Mayes (Jefferson), Masters (West Holmes), Morr (Norton), Neff (Streetsboro), Gayner (Revere)

126 - Heil (Brunswick), Carmany (Brecksville), Larue (Manchester), Anderson (Midview), Wiseman (Stow) - is he around?, Wells (Copley), Bostic (Jackson), Ashley (Buckeye), McHood (Mogadore)

132 - Graber (Green), White (Manchester), Kelley (Norton), Duvall (Rootstown), Bronstrup (Brecksville), Reeves (Woodridge), Bryson (Highland), Shepherd (Norwayne)

138 - Regalbuto (Brecksville), Fields (Brunswick), Chilson (Rootstown), Devera (Parma), Kiss (Norton), Scavuzzo (Highland)

145 - Patten (Stow), Philion (Midview), Scalf (Barberton), Bailey (Madison)

152 - Voinovich (Brecksville), Linder (Highland), Magda (Madison), Skye (Mogadore), Barnett (Sheridan), Rodgers (Streetsboro), Uhl (West Holmes)

160 - Reinhart (Canfield), Anderson (Streetsboro), Koplow (Kenston), Anderson (Rootstown), Neitenbach (Buckeye)

170 - Carey (Streetsboro), Eyre (Tallmadge), Cutrer (Canfield), Kiussis (Brunswick), Sell (Brecksville)

182 - D'Alesio (Canfield), Wokojance (Barberton), Langguth (Rootstown), Vanadia (Brecksville), Neece (Sheridan) - is he here/195/220/wrestling?, Kidd (Norwayne), Kantazar (Tallmadge), S. Baldridge (West Holmes)

195 - Greer (Avon), Hatcher (Brecksville), N. Crawford (Canfield), Loughman (Sheridan), J. Baldridge (West Holmes), Zentiska (Barberton), Jaeckin (Olmsted Falls), Amato (Tallmadge)

220 - Stein (Canfield), Boyle (Rootstown), Blankenship (Tallmadge), Depp (Revere), Elias (Jackson), Ed. Sevastos (Brunswick)

285 - Roesch (Avon), Bucknavich (Midview), J. Petit (Hoban), Williams (Canton South)

It wouldn't be a Bill Dies weekend without a weather event threatening us! Stay tuned to our Twitter (@BillDiesMWT) for updates. You can also sign up for text alerts by clicking here - remind.com/join/ck7acf

One thing that will be different this year is, there will be no outside food allowed to be brought in to the school. This is a new Firestone High School policy.

We are looking forward to the weekend watching great wrestling! See you there!

To answer Bucksman’s question about Wiseman. I understand he is not with the team. I heard second hand that it was over a dispute with the coach about what weight he was going to wrestle. Again, second hand information as to why, but reliable source on the fact that he isn’t wrestling.

Due to the impending snowstorm that is on the way, there are a few schedule changes for SATURDAY ONLY - Wrestling will now start at 9:00 (instead of 9:30) and the finals will now start at 5:00 (instead of 6:00).

Had heard that yesterday but waited for wrestler list to come out to confirm. No word on why though.

Are Hatcher Crawford 1 4 seed or 2 3 seed? Careful on putting them in a finals rematch if they are on opposite sides of bracket. That is a deep weight.

They are 1 and 3 so they are on opposite sides of bracket.

Langguth out is defintely a big name missing from 182. Kid is a stud, however I think DíAlesio would still be heavy favorite at this weight class. Heís wrestling better than he ever has, that 4th place finish at the Ironman has boosted his confidence. Considering his losses there were to Winston whose rated the #1 kid in the country at the weight class is a hell of an accomplishment.

Borofan's #1s that are at this tournament by weight.

113-D2 Woods, D3 Edwards
126-D1 Carmany, D3 Larue
170-D2 Carey
182-D1 Wokojance, D2 D'Alesio (would have had all 3 had Langguth not been scratched).
220-D2 Stein

Total ranked kids per weight class
106-9
113-5
120-3
126-8
132-9
138-7
145-5
152-6
160-6
170-5
182-7 (would be 8 with Langguth)
195-7
220-5
285-4

Those were all manually counted so I am sure I am off by 1 or so on a couple weight classes. Not as many state ranked kids as 4 or 5 years ago for sure, but still a tough tournament.

I was so looking forward to the 182 match's myself no better competition than having all 3 #1s but unfortunately Canfield will be without D'alesio this weekend unless something changes drastically.... But again it's all about the end game and staying healthy getting there...

As was stated a couple schools (Medina Highland and West Holmes notably) did not show up at all for the tournament then some other schools didn't show up the second day (Massillon Jackson, Medina Buckeye notably).

Highlights from the Bill Dies --

106: Saxton (Avon) won it, beat Barber (Canfield) 5-3 in the semi, two takedowns to none; the final was 4-2 over Castro (Brecksville), got ridden out in the second but got a takedown to the back with about :30 left to win it

113: Stanley (Brecksville) beat state qualifier Fletcher (Canfield) 6-2 in the semi and then fellow state placer Edwards (Rootstown) 4-2 in the final. Counter takedown in the first and a rideout in the third the difference, Edwards had some deep attacks in the first and second but was unable to finish.

120: Butler (Copley) was the class of the field and it showed, pinned Morr (Norton) in the semi and then beat Mayes (Jefferson) 5-0 for gold.

126: Carmany (Brecksville)/Heil (Brunswick) in the final was about a worse case scenario for Heil in terms of match progression, match action, and result. Carmany scored off of a Heil leg attack in the first, and got three turns for a 9-0 lead after one. Heil did get a second period takedown, but Carmany escaped and got the next takedown into a fall.

132: Graber (Green) won the title, 10-5 over Duvall (Rootstown) in the semi after Duvall had pinned state qualifier Kelley (Norton) earlier in the tournament. Reeves (Woodridge) beat state placer White (Manchester) 5-0 in the upper bracket semi, Graber 3-0 over Reeves for gold. Bronstrup (Brecksville) got bronze despite getting pinned by Wickline (Glen Oak) on the front side, he beat White (Manchester) 3-2 in the consi semi; notably Samidan (Kenston) beat Duvall 4-2 in a consi semi; Bronstrup also pinned Kelley in consolation.

138: Fields (Brunswick) had a tournament to remember. He beat Chilson (Rootstown) 8-2, takedown and turn in the first for 4-0 decided the match, and that was just the semi. Fields then took Regalbuto (Brecksville) apart with double leg after double leg in a 17-7 win, the first takedown was a four-pointer off a different type of attack that led into a cradle basically. Regalbuto did not wrestle well in his semi, though it was a 30-14 tech, as he gave up three takedowns in the bout.

145: Patten (Stow) won the tournament, not much to write home about, controlled every match against kids that he should control.

152: Voinovich (Brecksville) won the tournament, did what he should, majored returning state qualifier Magda (Madison) 19-5 in the final. Magda beat fellow state qualifier Skye (Mogadore) 6-5 in the semi. Skye then lost in his consi semi.

160: Koplow (Kenston) won the tournament, toughest match was the semi where he needed a takedown inside ten seconds left to beat Anderson (Streetsboro) 5-4. The lower half-bracket was broke when Williams (Canton South) upset Reinhart (Canfield) in the quarters, pinned him with a second five-point move type of toss; Reinhart led 8-3 late in the second and was put on his back, then in a 10-10 match, Williams did the same thing. Anderson beat Reinhart 7-6 in consolation, and then was pinned by Rizzo (Brecksville) in the final on an upper body type toss despite leading 5-1 before the toss. Rootstown's Anderson lot 6-1 to Reinhart on the front side and 10-7 on the backside in taking seventh.

170: Continued success for Carey (Streetsboro), beat Cutrer (Canfield) 6-4 and Eyre (Tallmadge) 8-3 to win the weight; Cutrer and Eyre both lost go-to bouts last year at Alliance, while Carey was a state qualifier two years ago. Those kids will all see each other at district. Insert Hivnor dropping down and Aurora's Anderson, you have more state level kids than state spots.

182: Wokojance (Barberton) looked the part of a state champion in taking it to Vanadia (Brecksville) in the finals bout, 17-2 tech in 4:25

195: Hatcher (Brecksville) avenged the Brecksville finals loss to Greer (Avon) with a 5-1 victory, two takedowns to none. That was in the semis, he then beat Zentiska (Barberton) by third period pin. Zentiska pinned 2x SQ Loughman (Sheridan) in his semi. Loughman 3rd, Greer 4th as Greer did not contest the bronze medal bout.

220: Stein (Canfield) over Boyle (Rootstown) 5-3 in overtime. Boyle had a first period takedown. Stein was close to a takedown in the second, but both wrestlers had supporting points out of bounds. Boyle was hit for one stall early in the third, and then was called for a very questionable (IMO) second stall with about ten seconds left. Boyle tried a throw at the edge of the mat in OT, but Stein ended up in the takedown position.

285: Bucknavich (Midview) remained undefeated as he pinned Roesch (Avon). They did not meet in the league dual in December, but can meet in the league next month and then very likely at sectional and district. Bucknavich had a first period takedown, Roesch reversed to start the second and then Bucknavich reversed into the fall. Bucknavich is probably just too big for Roesch.
