9/22 Big Races this weekend

Midwest Catholic Championships
Saturday Night Lights at Centerville
Malone Invite
Strongsville Invite
Tiger Invite @ Pick Central

Anymore big meets this weekend? The big match ups the last couple of years occurred at the Centerville meet under the lights and the Midwest Catholic Invite- occasionally will have some good match ups with St. Iggies, St. Johns, St. Xavier--but rarely does it pan out that way.

The meet was held at GlenOak last year, too, and so was the district meet.

Malone had a donor give money for new athletic fields (to be called Pioneer Park). The project started and included the construction of a big wall (don't think they got Walsh U. to pay for it ). They couldn't maintain a course with the construction in progress. Word on the street is the project has stalled and the donor has pulled the remainder of the funding.

Meanwhile, the Malone Invitational is not what it used to be. The D2 race was big last year, but the DI and DIII races were not so big. This year, they are racing all divisions together.

Centerville Night Race has a lot going for it. I've been there multiple times:

1. First days of fall- cooler weather- supposed to be 63 degrees tomorrow night with 10% humidity.
2. Night time- also cooler weather and no exposure to the intense rays of the sun.
3. Fast course. The course is on football practice fields, around the track 3 times for about 1200 meters on the actual track.

4. Atmosphere. Stadium seating. Grandma and grandpa love spectator sports. XC usually is not a spectator sport. You put grandma and grandpa in custom stadium seat- they are happy.

5. Spectators- I believe if they actually counted the spectators for the last race it would be over 10,000 people in the stadium for the 2 championship races. Only the state meet rivals the finish at the night race. And even then the state meet is not as loud as the night race.

I try to get around the state to different meets each season and went to Centerville for the first time last fall.

I agree with everything except that I can't estimate crowds and 10,000 seems a little high to me. Also, there is about 750-800 meters run on the track, not 1200. First time is 300 meters, 2nd time is 150 meters, and 3rd time is 300 meters. Outside of lane one may add up to 50 meters total.

It would be nice for fans to get out on the field loop but I understand management concerns that people might wonder onto the course as runners approach.

My youngest son stayed out for CC because of two meets. Centerville Under the lights and Woodridge CVNP. He loves those two.

imagine a dedicated CC course where it was lit and set up for spectators. Bet the state meet would draw more than 20k People. The way football numbers are going, maybe in 30 years CC will dominate.

The state meet course is a joke. We have races for 30+ years at a horse track and a drag strip. All for the sake of grandstands.

I was at Centerville last night and thought about a state meet at a large HS with a track finish. It would be an unreal environment. Double loop course so people see them multiple times.

Plenty of large HS in the Columbus area that could do this

I coach at a large high school here and I can't think of a single high school in the Columbus area that could host the state meet. None of them could handle the parking. Davidson and Darby might come the closest, but I don't even want to think about trying to get state meet traffic through Hilliard. I think we would just have the kids walk over from Coffman.

I like the idea of a stadium finish for the fans. If done correctly it would have to be at 3 different locations or 3 different time periods to enable the crowds.

For instance most LARGE D1 schools have about 2000+ parking spaces on campus. You would need a school close to a church or other locations with extra parking nearby to enable another 1000+ parking spaces. The athletes would need to be dropped off and buses and vans parked off campus. This would take away the RV parking and the tailgating. Which would take away from the state meet experience. I LOVE the tailgating that teams and parent groups do at the district, regional and state meet. That is part of the atmosphere.

If done your way you would need 3 locations or 3 time periods for instance:
A Division at 10am
B Division at 2pm
C Division at 6pm

The middle school state meet did have this type of format years ago when I went. I believe Dublin Coffman high school back in 2007 it was located. It was very nice for the middle school state meet. Not that crowded and fan friendly.

Realistically I don't think it is possible without taking away from the state meet. I personally love the new state meet course and experience.

Not very many people that I've talked to like National trails. However, and this became painfully clear on Saturday at the Centerville meet, I do not watch a cross country meet like 99.9% of people. I sat with parents of a very successful program and they could not follow the meet by themselves. They would ask me how I thought we were doing and I said 3rd at best and 5th at worst. They could see that I was not following on a tablet or phone and asked how I knew. I can't really explain how I keep track of so many teams in my head, but I can. I have 45 + years experience watching meets since I was 5. I was pretty close. Ft. Loramie helps a lot with their uniforms. They are like little place holders. The parents I had around me could barely keep track of their own kid and maybe one or two other teammates, but not 15 - 20 teams like I can. I will admit I knew we were 3-5, but I did not know which teams were ahead of us. I was really concentrated on Woodridge vs Unioto, so those were my main focus. I could tell roughly where we were and when the scoreboard originally had us at second, I said "that can't be right" It was like I was a wizzard when it all was so close to my predictions. I said we were 3-5 and Unioto was 6-10. I said 1 and 2 were clear then 3-5 was tight and 6-10 was sort of tight with Unioto in that mix. After 10 ish, I was clueless myself.

So, the state meet should be set up for the people around me and not me. I want to get out on the course and run around and interact and let kids know they need to move up 4 places and get this team. The other parents do not care about that. So, National Trail might be ideal and they just need more cameras or a drone or two and reporters out in strategic locations and video boards with more information. I don't care about any of that, but I'm less that 1% of the type of people watching the sport. It will never be how I like it most again. Have to come to realize that and move on.

I feel exactly the same. I used to put a lot of effort into seeing as much of the race as possible and had a tremendous feeling of being cheated when our kids got to the biggest meet of their life and I was expected to sit in the bleachers and wait for OHSAA to tell me how the race went.
