Troy D-3 District Rankings (Off Season #3)

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

I started moving wrestlers up and down from their previous yearís weights. The new weights are partially based off of where theyíve been wrestling in the off season, though a lot of it is pure guesswork at this time.
Please let me know if anyone has inside information about new weights, schools, or wrestlers that they think should be added.

Iíve tried shifting the wrestlers around from schools that changed divisions. Please let me know if any are wrong, or if Iím forgetting any schools/wrestlers.

* = unsure about participation

-The schools of the incoming freshmen are based off of the previous Yappi thread. Please let me know if any are wrong or have changed.

1. Wyatt Riddle- Legacy Christian Academy (2nd state)
2. Cael Vanderhorst Ė Covington (5th middle school state)
3. Chase Caprella- Allen East (SQ)
4. Dakoda Jenkins- Ridgedale
5. Gabe Sutton- Wayne Trace
6. Luke Bullinger- Lincolnview
7. Tristen McKee- Parkway
8. Rylan Roberts- Preble Shawnee

Riddle hit his stride at the state tournament last year where he surprised many by reaching the state finals.
After falling to Devan Hendricks in the sectional finals, Riddle reversed that result in a 6-4 sudden victory triumph in the state semis. He also pinned Jordan Crist and defeated senior Jared Fahrer 8-6 in his first two bouts.

1. Ethan Turner- Troy Chr. (3rd state)
2. Devan Hendricks- Greeneview (6th state)
3. Tyler Bauer- Wayne Trace (6th district)
4. Wilbur Compress- Reading
5. Dolan Young- Covington
6. Andrew Hutchinson- Tri-County North
7. Casey St. Pierre- Waynesville
8. Ian Goodpaster- Deer Park

Hendricks reached impressive new heights last year, qualifying for his first state tournament and landing a spot on the podium after reaching the state semifinals.
He bested state finalist Riddle 5-2 in the sectional finals and later posted a 5-2 win over 7th place finisher Ray Adams in the first round of the state tournament before following that up with a 5-4 victory over 5th place finisher Colton Bethel.

1. Tommy Hoskins- Legacy Christian Acad. (1st, 1st, 1st state)
2. Graham Shore- Miami East (3rd, 3rd, 7th state)
3. Payton Lane- National Trail
4. Lane McCombs- Southeastern (6th district)
5. Colton Robins- Reading (6th district)
6. J.C. Fox- Dixie (5th district, 5th district 2016)
7. Jake Mumper- Roger Bacon
8. Tarren Riffle- N. Union

The Oklahoma recruit Hoskins starts the year ranked 7th in the country by Flo Wrestling.
It looks like he could face his nemesis Shore at both the district and state tournaments. I believe he is 2-1 vs. Shore at the high school level with the most recent match-up being the district finals from last year, won 3-2 by Hoskins.

1. Kalib Patterson- Ridgedale (8th state)
2. Kaleb Nickels- Miami East (SQ)
3. Cael Bey- Versailles (5th district)
4. Sam Patterson- Clermont NE
5. Ethin Hoffman- Arcanum (5th district)
6. Brian Chmielewski- Coldwater
7. Deuce Brown- Legacy Christian Academy
8. Ben Stroud- Mechanicsburg

Patterson posted a pair of pins over state qualifier Leíon Palomo at the district tournament last year and then earned an 11-3 win over Palomo in the blood round of the state tournament to secure his first state medal. He also knocked off Brier Marthey 9-6 in the first round of the state tournament.

1. Jacob Edwards- Troy Chr. (3rd, 2nd state)
2. Drew Price- (Middletown) Madison (5th district 2016, 6th district 2015)
3. Dustin Robins- Reading (6th district)
4. Preston Platfoot- Versailles (5th district, 5th district 2016)
5. Justin Sigler- Coldwater (6th district 2016)
6. Nick Miller- N. Union
7. Ezra Wallace- Williamsburg
8. Riley Richards- Covington

Robins picked up 3 pins at the district tournament last year on his way to earning his first district medal. He also wrestled a tight bout with a tough Seth Taylor in a 5-4 go-to-state match.

1. Alex Isbrandt- Miami East (2nd, 7th, 7th state)
2. Jared Ford- Troy Chr. (5th state)
3. Jackson Hugentobler- Madeira (SQ)
4. Max Neiling- Patrick Henry (6th district, SQ 2015)
5. Steven Mangen- Versailles
6. Jordan Eslick- (Mid.) Madison
7. Josh Patterson- Ridgedale
8. Johnny Schirmer- Blanchester

Ford picked up an impressive win over state placer Luke Wymer (6-4) at the Hoosier Preseason Open. Hugentobler posted a 9-4 win over Isaiah Stickley at the same event.

1. Chase Sumner- Ada (8th, 4th state)
2. Zane Strubler- Miami East (SQ)
3. Joey Caprella- Lima C.C. (5th district)
4. Dillon Walker- Legacy Christian Academy
5. Kerington Martin- Covington (6th district)
6. Dallas Scott- Centerburg (SQ 2016)
7. Hayden Pummel Ė Indian Lake (4th middle school state)
8. Clayton Schirmer- Blanchester

Caprella claimed a 10-0 win over state placer Jarrett Bischoff at the Hoosier Preseason Open.

1. Wyatt Lefker- Williamsburg (8th state)
2. Luke Brown- Allen East (5th district)
3. Drew Combs- Preble Shawnee
4. Jordan Hinegardner- Lima C.C.
5. Brent Siefker- Ottawa-Glandorf
6. Matt Hall- Bethel-Tate
7. Thomas Foster- Waynesville
8. Braden Rausch- Carlisle

Lefker placed 3rd at the district tournament last season, beating Logan Balbaugh 10-6 in the consolation finals. He followed that performance with wins over Ian Maund (6-0) and Mathew Ross (1:32) at the state tournament to secure his first state medal.

1. Jesse Mitchell- Southeastern (6th district)
2. Dylan Knotts- Indian Lake (5th district)
3. Grant Goecke- Ottawa-Glandorf (5th district)
4. Seth Obringer- Coldwater
5. Dylan Schenk- Milton-Union (6th district 2016)
6. Hunter Showalter- Wayne Trace
7. James Badial-Luna- Bluffton
8. Bryce Stanley- Grandview Hts.

Mitchell beat state qualifier Seth Henderson 4-2 in OT to claim the sectional title last year. He also defeated Goecke 7-4 in the quarterfinals of the district tournament. Earlier in the season, Mitchell hung tough with Kentucky state finalist Cody Huston, losing a 2-0 bout at Xenia.

1. Seth Henderson- Miami Valley (SQ)
2. Connor Dixon- Indian Lake (SQ)
3. Danny Rosales- Ottawa-Glandorf (SQ)
4. Kellen Calhoun- Bethel
5. Avery Collins- Waynesville
6. Bryson Tarantanella- Preble Shawnee
7. Tyler Gigandet- Versailles
8. Jesse Biser- National Trail

Dixon pins frequently in his matches, and his biggest fall from last year likely came in the district quarterfinals where he stuck state placer Ben Davenport in the first period. Dixon also pinned Isaac Allen in the consolation semifinals of the district tournament to earn his first set of state tournament tickets.

1. Daniel Beemer- Ottawa-Glandorf (4th, 5th state)
2. Matthew Welker- Miami E. (5th district)
3. Dustin Knapp- Mechanicsburg (6th district, 6th district 2016)
4. Gage DeHart- Versailles
5. Owen Holtke- Bethel-Tate (6th district)
6. Jordan Stubbs- Preble Shawnee
7. Chris Cox-Wilson- N. Union
8. Craig Montgomery- National Trail

Welker gained steam as the season wore on last year, eventually finishing as the state alternate out of this district. He defeated Knapp 2-1 in sudden victory in the 5th place final of the district tournament. This win evened the season series between the two wrestlers at 2-2.

1. Hudson Jump- Grandview Hts. (5th, 7th state)
2. Will Morrow- Patrick Henry (SQ)
3. Damon Beatty- Troy Chr. (SQ)
4. Josh Pearson- Columbus Academy (SQ 2016)
5. James Peters- Blanchester
6. Zach Banks- (Middletown) Madison (SQ)
7. Skyler Straszheim- Twin Valley South
8. Julian Anderson- Mt. Gilead

Jump improved on his freshman state tournament with a 5th place finish in a loaded weight-class last season. He earned a lopsided 18-5 win over 2x state placer Jake Burns to claim a title at Pleasant last year, and later bested 3x state placer John Kelbly 3-1 in the 5th place final at the state tournament. The win reversed the result of their first round bout, won by Kelbly in a 4-2 match.
Jump enters the season as the state title favorite at this weight-class with Willis and Hoover likely moving up to 220 and Stoll and Beemer surprisingly expected to drop to 182.

1. Deandre Nasser- Bluffton (SQ)
2. Tyler Courtright- Milton-Union (SQ)
3. Brenden Dalton- Miami East (5th district)
4. Ty Stevenson- Preble Shawnee
5. Cole Mefford- Indian Lake (6th district)
6. Bradley Lewis- Bethel-Tate
7. Dylan Thompson- N. Union
8. Nick Baker- Troy Chr.

Nasser picked up a big win early last year when he beat D-1 state placer Dillon Smith 4-3 at Findlay.
He also earned 3 wins over state qualifier Crew Oberheim, a 6-1 win over state qualifier Wyatt Long, and a pin over Hunter Foster at the state tournament to reach the blood round.

1. Brian Stears- Williamsburg (4th state)
2. Thomas Schweiterman- Coldwater (5th district)
3. Jeff Meyer Ė Columbus Grove (1st middle school state)
4. Jeffrey Ware- Versailles
5. Joey Groeber- Clermont NE
6. Brennan Davies- Allen E.
7. Kaleb Fisher- Mt. Gilead
8. Noah Reel- Wayne Trace

Schweiterman will be a serious threat to place at the state tournament this year. He only lost to top caliber wrestlers last season and also posted a pin over state qualifier Thomas Lytle, a 3-1 win over district placer Alex Steele, and a pin over a tough Kermit Beckwith. Schwietermanís only losses at the district tournament were 4-1 and 5-0 to state placers Cameron Coffman and Brian Stears.

1. Miami East
2. Troy Christian
3. Versailles
4. Legacy Christian Academy
5. Ottawa-Glandorf
6. Williamsburg
7. Indian Lake
8. Preble Shawnee/Coldwater

Iím a little surprised to see Ford back at 138 again given the fact that he beat the state title favorite at 145 (Conan Becker) last season at the state tournament.
However, he certainly doesnít shy away from tough matches, as we could see from his performance at the Hoosier Preseason Open where he beat state placer Wymer in the middle of a brutal weight-class.
Returning state champ Oscar Sanchez is listed at 106 for Super 32. If he stays down at that weight for the season, Turner will be the state title favorite at 113 entering the year.

Legacy Christian may continue to climb this list as the season progresses. I donít know what the story is on Skinner who may attend LCA, per Boro. Iíd guess that would bump Riddle up to 113. Iíve seen some impressive middle school results from Walker, but I have no idea how good heíll be out of the gate. I may have him ranked too low. Brown had some wins at the Hoosier Preseason Open, but defaulted out of his match with state placer Jabari Thomas.

Ottawa-Glandorf also has the potential to climb higher if wrestlers like Siefker, Goecke, and Rosales continue to get better. Beemer starts the season as the state title favorite at 182, though Iím not sure why heís cutting to the weight. He would have been the title favorite at 195, where he wrestled last season. However, itís his senior year, so he should wrestle where he feels best.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baumís Page and Jakeís Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.
