Am I that old or are the younger generations just that ignorant?

Last week at the Texas Hold'em table at the local casino, I finally got a royal flush. The card that gave me the royal was the Jack of Diamonds. I said just like in The Cincinnatti Kid where the deciding card was the Jack of Diamonds. No one at the table had ever heard of the poker movie called The Cincinnatti Kid. I said, "Remember, it was the movie with Steve McQueen". No one, NO ONE, at the table had ever heard of Steve McQueen. Are the younger generation just ignorant of one the coolest movie stars of the 60's-70's?

They would probably react the same way if you did not know the words to a Migos song.

I can understand why people in their 20's would've missed it, but...

...poker players that haven't seen "The Cincinnati Kid"... ...smdh...

I was watching that same movie with some other poker players last year, and one of them actually "called out" the string betting in the final scene. It made me cringe really hard. (Like, yeah, there's string betting, and yeah, it's against the rules, but just shut up and enjoy the movie...)

I agree....just saying an old movie is not something a 20 something would likely know.

Also if you are going to be the arbitrator of ignorance and you use the Movie Cincinnati Kid as your evidence you may want to spell CINCINNATI correctly.

McQueen has been dead for 38 years, probably before they were born, and The Cincinnati Kid was released 53 years ago.

You are old. Young people are ignorant.

The one McQueen movie I must watch if it's on, "The Sand Pebbles."

And there's "Bullit," "The Magnificent 7," "The Great Escape," etc. All truly great movies, and now he's forgotten, or even worse, totally unknown to whole generations?

Wife and I went out to dinner tonight. The waitress was a 19 year old young college student. The conversation got around to views on the border situation. The wife mentioned that in our travels and government service we had seen socialism and communism up close. Then I said "And after all of that we came back to Mayberry." She had never heard of Andy and Mayberry.

I know who Steve McQueen is, and I enjoy watching Bullitt. But I've never seen The Cincinnati Kid, and I wouldn't have understood the significance of that card. I barely know why aces and eights are significant.

As to why successive generations aren't as familiar with him, perhaps because he's not associated with a number of iconic lines, the way Clint Eastwood or Tom Cruise are? The best line I can think of for Steve is from The Towering Inferno: "They'll probably find some dumb son of a beech to do it" - but how often do you see The Towering Inferno being shown on TV?
