This seems like a safe bet to me. I thought it was odd that OHSAA hadn't released a statement of some sort, or had any quotes in the media. Then reading this post, of course they haven't, they're waiting for the lawsuit.

Seems like the OHSAA made such a huge mess of this any other schools this season being suddenly added ? (I know Chaney won’t be playing football this year )according to the state

Yeah they won’t make the playoffs with their remaining schedule. Feel good story early in the year but they still aren’t good.

100 percent correct. If it helped the schools who beat them you wouldn’t hear a word.

As I said in another thread about this, this is a case of the OHSAA not executing common sense in their decision. It's clear that despite having 'rules' they really didn't think out rules to cover all situations.

This is an odd situation that you probably won't ever see happen elsewhere. A public school enrolling students, but combining all athletics as if they were one-school/two-campuses, and then try to split them back apart.

The reasonable situation would be to do enrollment count of the sports affected as the one school splits back into two. Given that football is an odd sport that's tough to just throw everyone into where a JV schedule to start makes sense, but letting the remaining seniors still get to play for the school team they've always played for is entirely feasible.

But, in absence of understanding of the situation, OHSAA's archaic and rigid rules are applied.

East should stay D2 this season for football, with Chaney students still playing, while Chaney still runs their inconsequential JV team as well as East having their equally inconsequential JV team.

Instead, it forced a relocation of students from one school to another, a lessening of other teams's L1 and L2 points despite the fact that they're still basically playing the exact same roster from the exact same pool of students as they did prior to the OHSAA getting a bug up their butt.

Oh well. OHSAA does things the way they want. Top down authoritarianism dictated by their unflinching adherence to their rules. Even when said rules make no sense because they didn't think out all possibilities when determining their rules

This story isn't over yet...YCSD needs to be very careful or else they could be finding themselves with a forfeit this weekend against Howland.

My opinion is that YCSD is a clown show, even with Shepas as AD.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) - The ruling body of Ohio high school sports has decided that Youngstown students who transferred from Chaney to East to play football are done for the rest of the season.

It's a story we first told you about a month ago when it was first decided the students couldn't play. School officials were hoping for a change of mind.

As it turns out, Tuesday's decision by the Ohio High School Athletic Association is not as bad as originally expected but still affects four students wanting to play high school sports.

These are students that transferred from Chaney to East on the day before school started so they could participate in varsity sports.

When we first reported the story on August 24, there were 12 football players and two volleyball players whose eligibility was in question.

Since then, officials with Youngstown City Schools have been involved in negotiations and it was decided that just three football players and one volleyball player would not be allowed to participate.

The OHSAA has decided in four cases that the rules regarding the transfer of students were broken and those four students will be ineligible for the remainder of the football and volleyball season.

Youngstown City Schools CEO Krish Mohip was involved with the negotiations.

"Each child has a separate and very specific case for why we still believe they could be eligible," he said. "We're going to continue to have conversations with OHSAA. If we don't have a final ruling by Friday, then they won't be able to play."

One other ruling that came Tuesday from the OHSAA was the determination that East will now drop from Division II to Division IV in football. This week's computer rankings already reflect that.

East Head Coach Brian Marrow said Steubenville, Mooney, Hubbard and Poland are all Division IV, so the drop in division doesn't make it any easier for East.

At least it is only 3 players. Not sure why they could not get permission for a transition year and kids could stay at Chaney. If they planned on no Varsity at Chaney in any sport this year, would that have been acceptable?

I think the OHSAA must be rigid to their rules. It is how an organization like this must be run, and they do it well.

It is possible in some of the referendum items passed in recent years that the Commissioner ability to grant eligibility absent a situation being specifically addressed was removed. Now a transfer MUST meet one of the 12 or so laid out Exceptions. I think my issue is they should not have been forced to transfer in the first place. Sounds like that is Youngstown School's fault, but a solution could have been worked out better than this.

Thanks for the info. This is crazy to do this IMO. The OHSAA needs to get stuff like this settled before the season starts. How would you feel if you are one of those teams that played East and is affected by this ruling? Maybe someone they play either misses out on a playoff spot or home game because they lose points? Those tenths count

Ridiculous that they would make any of these kids ineligible. No varsity sports at Chaney. Those kids played at East in the past, but now can't? If they transferred to Chaney or back to the city "home" school from open enrollment or private school and then Chaney decided to not have varsity sports in 2018-19, how is that the kids' fault? OHSAA needs to make this right. We aren't talking about kids transferring to existing programs from existing programs simply for athletics.

WGHfan---Chaney is playing mostly freshman & soph. Their only varsity opponent is this week at Crestview. I believe the game will NOT count as a win or loss for Crestview. It will be treated as an open date.

I was just being sarcastic, about Chaney being in the computer rankings.I know they had no varsity schedule, or team. That is why the OSHAA, should have just let this alone until next year. Let the kids play, that were already playing for East, that go to Chaney

According to the OHSAA Website Chaney is listed with 291 boys and they have them down as D3 for football

The parents of the kids at East filed the suit, not Youngstown City Schools.

Don't blame them. They didn't ask or want to transfer. They clearly did nothing to gain a competitive advantage. Just playing for the same school they have for previous 3 years.

I think Shepas should have said something more supportive of the athletes. It certainly looks like his approach to returning athletics to Chaney caused this problem for the kids in the first place.

New schools are usually not recognized by the OHSAA until July 1st. The enrollment figures are adjusted around September 9th-10th when schools are actually open.
