Does your school have a "dead period" in the summer?

I’m talking about a “hands off” period during summer break when no school activities can take place. Some schools in this area have them but others don’t. How about yours?

I should clarify that I'm talking about all sports/extracurriculars across the board. The school I follow has a two-week period in June/July where NO organized school activities can be scheduled. Our community has gotten used to it and loves that at least part of the summer can be reserved for family activities.

I imagine families appreciate the time also for vacations which are usually difficult to schedule.

As much as I hate to say it.......i think it's a good idea but many kids will still have their club, aau, travel, and other things that won't habe to follow.

Not the same thing, but our school has a 'dark night' every Wednesday during the school year where no extracurricular will go past 6pm so everyone knows they will be done by then.
It started in the 80s as 'religion night' but it's not PC to say tha5 anymore. However, the kids who do attend religion class do so Wednesday evenings during that time

Great idea. Should be a state mandate.

Should be a month off. No school activities for a month. We take sports way too seriously today.

Dead period would be a wonderful idea. KY has a 2 week dead period, state wide. When I coached in NKY, I loved it. It is a welcomed break from the grind. Parents, players, coaches all liked it. It was easy to schedule vacations, and get a necessary break before camp & 2 a days start. Wives and families of coaches really, really appreciated that dead period.

We have to remember, it's high school sports; it's supposed to be fun. It's not the pros, and it's not life and death for anyone. Coaches get paid little to nothing, let them have some summer R&R with their families. Let the high schoolers be high schoolers and be care free for 2 weeks.

It is the same for Marion Local on Wed. night, believe most MAC schools do not schedule activities on Wed. night. because of religion class.

Our dead period was from the end of the school year (give or take a few days) to a couple of weeks before school started for football camp.

The football probably was not as good, but the kids were probably better off in the long run.

Most schools are so bad at everything it seems like they never have an "alive" period.

We have always "shut down" the program the week of July 4th! Gives everyone a chance to recharge their batteries before conditioning and mini-camp! Football is a grind for players and coaches so the week off usually helps the morale and excitement to get started the following week!

I feel like this is a pretty standard practice among most High School football programs. I've been at a few schools that do this. There's so much going on in June and July with workouts, camps, 7-on-7s that the kids need that week to rest their bodies before doubles start and 16 weeks of football (possibly more) start.

Fascinating input. Really put a lot of research into that one

Your school must be one of them.
