The last necessary war fought by this country ended in 1945. If something similar came up, I'd be happy to fight.

Exactly.

I am confident though that people will swamp the recruiting offices if something pops off, and those who have left will come back in droves as well.

Garrison military sucks.

Used to be that way , but I am not sure if it still is.

Knew a guy, from Africa, who BARELY spoke any English and man I felt bad for him as he understood NOTHING that was being said.
Ended up getting medically rolled out, not sure if he ever got his citizenship or not.

Yep. It's much easier when somebody else (or their sons, nephews, etc.) are the ones who have to put their lives on the line.

yup

Even as an "old man", I could be an effective sniper. My kids are grown. I might lock up after three nights sleeping in a ditch. Just gimme a ghillie suit good enough that an enemy could pizz on me and not realize it, and I'll shoot him when I limber up enough to raise my weapon

My grandfather worked in the old Cleveland Tank Plant for a year or so on a special project - on loan from ol' Hank Ford. My uncle was probably still in diapers at that time, so Pop wasn't going to be sent overseas. He developed and guided initial production of a universal bracket for a generator so that it could be used on a wide variety of military vehicles, with just a different belt in a few cases. It had a half a dozen or so bolt patterns.

If America is threatened, serve at your highest usefulness, with country before self. I believe it to my core.

Yeah, I’d definitely extend citizenship to anyone who voluntarily serves in combat. Hard to believe anyone else wouldn’t, unless racism, of course.

Soldiers don't get to pick when the US goes to war, and it takes a full effort to make the machine roll on all the way from the front lines to the most basic of tasks.
Yeah, I do give more credence to those who enlist when mob's are imminent.

SUre, I will always give more props to those who go on the front lines, but I won't belittle someone who enlists but doesn't have a job that will put them there.

I do have issues with those who skirt their deployments for many "excuses" and that includes the myriad of females who just happen to get knocked up before mobilizations.

Soldiers come in all varieties.

There were former slaves that fought on the side of the north, fighting like tigers and knowing that they'd be likely tortued to death if captured.

There were Hessians that fought hard for a while, but then disappeared like that Homer Simpson into the bushes gif, to go start a trap line and become Americans.

Then there are those that inspired the old joke, "For Sale: Excellent condition. Italian military rifle; never fired, only dropped once."

In another direction, there is the genuine issue of combat trained soldiers in American street gangs. Not sure how widespread, but it's a thing. You want to arm La Raza ?

I don't know enough about the issue to say "Never!", but I know enough that I can't just say "Great idea. Go ahead." Especially with no current need for troops

Now that you are retired, I understand you can enlist as a major - if you have the patience to endure the process and the needed skills (doc, etc.).
