Mahoning valley postseason expectations

With week 7 amongst us, I thought I'd start a thread to discuss some of the area teams poised for playoff runs. Who looks the strongest? Who can win a region? Ect.
Canfield 6-0 #1 in D3 R9
Boardman 3-3 #7 in D2R7
Mooney 3-3 #8 in D4R13
Struthers 4-2 #10 in D4R13
Girard 6-0 #6 in D4R13
Poland 6-0 #3 in D4R13
Lakeview 5-1 #4 in D4R13
Salem 4-2 #9 in D4R13
South Range 6-0 #1 in D5R17
Berlin Center 5-1 #6 in D6R21
Columbiana 4-2 #8 in D6R21
Mcdonald 5-1 #10 in D6R21
Liberty 4-2 #11 in D6R21
Lisbon 5-1 #4 in D7R25
Warren JFK 3-3 #8 in D7R25

These seem to be the area contenders right now. Sorry if I forgot anyone. Fitch, Ursuline and Hubbard could be added but are long shots and would have to win out at this point to reach week 11. I think if I had to choose in confidence who I think can win their region I'd go
1 Canfield, 2 Southrange, 3 Mooney, 4 Poland,
5 Boardman.

I think Boardman has a chance to shock their region but the spartans need to get to week 11 first. Goodluck to all area teams come week 11. Hopefully someone can duplicate what Warren JFK accomplished last season and bring home some hardware.

Howland is also a 3-3 #11 in D3R7 Longshot for week 11 who would have to almost certainly knock off #1 Canfield to get it.

South Range by far has the best chance of winning their region. CCC isn't going to be able to qualify, they already beat Manchester, Grand Valley is 6-0 on a terrible schedule, ditto Black River. The Raiders are heavy favorites

If Boardman turns things around (5-5 may be all they need), makes the field, AND avoids the Massillon side of the bracket, they'd probably be favored to make it to week 13. Crazy, but it's still all out there for Boardman if they can screw their heads on straight.

Howland would have to win out which would include beating both Canfield and East (Akron). If they lose any remaining games they are actually mathematically eliminated even though Drew's site gives them a 1% chance if they lose one game.
And if they manage to win out they would have to face Canfield again most likely in week 11, and possibly East again in week 12.

A must win for Salem at Alliance this week. Serious points on the line if they can pull off the big upset at Mount Union stadium. With tough games against Louisville and West Branch looming, another loss might doom their slim playoff hopes unless they can somehow get a miracle W at Louisville.

Should be a lot of teams getting in this season, in my opinion canfield and south range have he best chances to make a pretty deep run, r13 has big red being a huge favorite with a lot of our valley teams getting in

I don't think any of the D6 or 7 schools will be able to get past week 12 unless they get a very favorable bracket. Region 21 is stacked while region 25 has 2 teams way above the rest in Dalton and Cuy Heights. Also what is crazy is that Valley Christian has a decent chance of making it at 3-7 (or 6 depending on the Crestwood situation) and will for sure be in with 4 wins.

Yeah region 25 has 5 teams with winning records. So VC has Lisbon and Garfield in the L2 back pocket. It's crazy that 1 more win would make them a 100% guarantee playoffs.

That's awful. I mean good for the kids but cmon. Could be 3-7 and in the playoffs because of two wins vs teams with a winning record. D7 definitely has some advantages but there are a lot negatives as well.

^ agreed, honestly you shouldn't be able to qualify for the playoffs with a record under 500, idc who you lose to, have your AD fix your schedule.

Fix the schedule? VC being D7 should be in a local leagues like EOAC or MVAC but those leagues don't want a non public. So they have to go extra mileage in a league where they're by far the smallest school.

I donít think you can criticize teams who go 10-0 with weak schedules and turn around and say the same of teams who take on the challenge of a difficult schedule. If a team gets the points with three or four wins to put them ahead of a team that won 8-9 games with a soft schedule then so be it. If you donít like it, schedule stronger competition. Thereís been a lot of talk about Girard and I agree they are at an advantage THIS year. But they have stepped up and moved up and will take their knocked because of it. And in three years will likely drop back down to D5. But you canít bad mouth a soft schedule and then whine about a tough one.

It's a double edged sword, girard this season if they played in the white tier they would have a home game with 8 wins, but with VC only getting 3 and getting in is ridiculous, not to
Mention they arnt any good anyway... they lost to Campbell....... it's not about bad mouthing either schedule, it's just the point being that "in this case girard" would benefit any season having a easy schedule, as long as you win them all most likely you are in 99 percent of the time, I understand people want to be battle tested, but for most schools the first priority is getting to week 11, not winning state even tho that's the ultimate goal, making it to week 11 is still a huge accomplishment. As for vc they arnt going to win anymore of their games anyway, but if they were to get in with 3 wins something needs changed. I'm fine with teams getting in at 5-5 6-4 but 3 wins I can't ever agree with.

That region is so down. There are four games left and somebody below them is very likely to get two or three wins and get to that 5-5 Mark. The only other option is to do away with regions. Otherwise, you have to take the top 8, regardless of their record. Mooney could get in with four wins and certainly dederve it. It’s the system that’s been working pretty well for a long time. It may not always be the best 8 but part of that is teams with weak scheduling having to pay the price for that choice or how the cards fell that season.

The problem is with the way the numbers fell the vast majority of quality small school teams ended up in D6. The D5 region is also going to have some bad teams get in with possibly only 4 wins, while there will be 4 or 5 7-3 or better D6 schools missing out.

Did Walsh Jesuit end up 3-6 one year and made it in?

What's bad is the fact EP could miss out simply because of being bumped down to D6 due to the inflated CB counts that put smaller schools into D5. Odd that a D5 base enrollment is in D6 anyhow.

Doesn't help being in the EOAC with a bunch of D6 & 7 schools with little computer points, but that's what the supers wanted wasn't it. (Sorry...I know that horse has been beaten to death many, many times)

Should be fun night Friday looking at the forecast. 100% chance of heavy rain starting Thursday night lasting through Friday. Grass fields will be sloppy and could lead to upsets

You are not offending me in anyway. I 100% agree. Politics ruined the league.

The MVAC would have been a good fit IMO. The EOAC would be a little tough for travel...Toronto, Southern & Wellsville.

I fully expect Poland to win out until Canfield. I believe Canfield will be a toss up game. I just think those two teams are a bit better than us. I really hope I'm wrong!

I get it totally. Poland has yet to be in a 4 quarter game. I don't think starting unit has played "complete" much past third quarter anytime this year.

The playoffs in R13 should be a lot of fun.

Steuby isn't the favorite many make them out to be.

FYI, the only reason Valley Christian was admitted to the Poetage Trail Conference was they were the only school to apply! Windham should have applied for readmttance. Newton Falls should have applied, Jackson Milton too, or even Berlin Center Western Reserve.
