HS-schooler Mondo Duplantis - European Champion - 19' 10 1/4" !!!

Recent Lafayette HS (Louisiana) grad, Mondo Duplantis, just won the European Championships with 3 straight PR's of 5.95m (19' 6 1/4"), 6.00m (19' 8 1/4"), and 6.05m (19' 10 1/4"). Tremendous competition in Berlin! It took 19' 6 1/4" to get bronze. Mondo moves to = #2 all-time on the outdoor PV world list, and = #4 on the combined indoor/outdoor list.

Mondo's HS record (and world under-20) vault now exceeds both the Collegiate record and the American record. According to info I'm reading on the PoleVaultPower twitter feed, Mondo's new Swedish record (Mondo's mother is Swedish may also qualify as a new American record under existing USATF rules. His father is former HS-record holder, Greg Duplantis (Lafayette, 1981), who vaulted 17' 11 3/4" himself in HS and 19' 1/4" as a pro.

Amazingly, fellow recent HS graduate, Sondre Guttormsen (Norway - Davis HS (California)), also vaulted to 2 new PR's with his 18' 10 1/4" PR.

AMAZING

That Lafayette school record may last awhile.

This is true, even though it's "only" 19' 5 1/2" (set at Mondo's state meet). That was an NFHS record, but Track & Field News counts high schooler's marks up until September 1st if they are seniors. The only exception is when a high schooler goes pro early, in which case, T&F News doesn't count pro marks towards HS records.

What is his future plans? I assume he is skipping college and going pro but have not heard for certain.

Yes, but everyone expects he'll do a "one-and-done" for LSU. What's the fun in vaulting against people that are on average several feet lower than you?

LSU is his father's and older brother's alma mater. LSU is also a facility that Mondo has jumped many time at, so it was natural.

That said, there may be discussion underway in the background now that Mondo has won a major championship and is now = #2 outdoor performer in history. Things may be changing.
