Alter Basketball

I want to get opinions on the Alter Knights basketball team this year.

What does everyone think about Alter's potential record and starters this year?

With Siggins, White, and Joseph all graduating last year, who are the Knights going to rely on for points? Could this be a potential down year for the legendary Coach Petro?

I would have to assume that their 3pt shooter would be Max Zukowitz. He shoots from crazy range outside the arc. When he is hot, he will light it up with easily 7 or more threes. It's hard to defend. The only problem is his height. He should be a shooting guard but not quite that tall.

Good post. I don't know much about Alter after last years team graduated.
Zukowitz and Adkins are both solid guards (maybe 5'10" - 6') and Cummins (6'2"?) returns as a probable starter, too. Backcourt should be solid.

Frontcourt??? I have no clue. Probably have to rely on someone moving up from JV or Frosh teams, which were both VERY good last year, so Alter might just re-load. There were some very familiar names on their JV/frosh squads, too...Penno; Laravie; etc. Don't think they have much height, though and that's always a trademark of Petro's teams.

Definitely looks like a down year. I can't remember when I last saw the cupboard seemingly this bare.

I'm assuming that Alter will have quality athletes coming from the JV team of last year, but my concern with them is their height. They do not have very many tall kids, but I believe Alter will break .500, they always do.

I think that their star this year will be Senior Connor Cummins, that was a 2nd Teamer last year, and a key role player behind White and Siggins.

The following is a player list based on last year's roster that was submitted to me. Last year's seniors have been deleted, and grade levels of the remaining players updated to reflect THIS season. Player indicated with * is a potential returning starter.

Alter (7 seniors graduated, 4 starters)

*03 g Max Zukowitz 5'11 Jr
01 g Michael Adkins 5'10 Sr
10 g Jack Bolek 5'11 Sr
20 f Chris Bockrath 6'2 Sr
21 g Connor Cummins 6'2 Sr
24 f Cody Conley 6'2 Sr
35 f Derrick Breathett 6'2 Sr

I hope this helps the discussion.

^^^as suspected...not much height. Losing 6'9" Joseph, 6'6" Siggins, BOTH 6'6" Heitz brothers and 6'8" Plunkett hurts a little...lol. Plus losing Jamarre White...wow, what's left?

Alter Basketball

I saw Alter at the UD camp this year. They gave Kalamzoo Central and UD recruit Devin Oliver their only loss of the weekend. The same Kalamazoo Central that beat Centerville by 20+ points.

They will have some size but will be really deep on the perimeter. Here is a rundown of their top 8 or 9 kids:

Connor Cummins returning letterman and co capt. a 6'2" driver with some range. Real athletic.

Michael Adkins returing letterman and co capt. 5'10" PG. Quick and fast. Will be hard to guard and has improved his outside shot.

Maz Zukowitz returning letterman, JR. 6'0" combo guard. Great offensive player. Great range, real athletic. Might lead them in scoring this year.

Joe Thuney 6'5" JR. Beast inside. Big frame and REAL strong. Atheltic for his size. DI OL scholarship prospect.

John Lecomte a 6'2" JR driver with range. Long arms, solid inside too.

Trey Freshwater a 6'0 JR shooting guard. Great 3 point shooter. Streaky but can be a difference maker.

Chris Bockrath another football player. 6"2" inside guy. Big frame, strong hands plays with a football mentality. Will bring toughess to the table.

Justin Winter and Jack Bolek. Both football playing guards. Both tough nosed and physical.

NOTE: Alter also has the top rated point guard in the state for his class in Freshman Jarron Simmons. Might not have an impact this year but look out for the next 3. Already being recruited by alot of majors including Dayton and Xavier.

Bottom line is Alter will be allright and if things fall into place for them, they could make a deep run in DII in the tournament. They will hardly be abysmal.

Does that help? :>

Thanks. Very helpful. What about a young Penno and a young Laravie, from JV/Frosh teams? Will they be Varsity? Also, there are a LOT of football players (incl. Cummins and Thuney, I think) on the team, and they might play deep into the playoffs, so possibly a slow start at first. Not much height for GCL play.

You can not be serious when you say you beat the same Kalamazoo team that gave Centerville and 11 point loss which was their worst loss of the entire summer. The team you played had none of their first five or six players until the end of the game, they arrived late from Michigan and most never even put their shoes on for the game. Respond to Centerville's Reserve team beating you at Fairmont and quit trying to put a smiley face on this rag tag group of players you are misleading everyone. Zukowitz and Lacomte are the only offensive threats, they have little or no size.

Don 't sleep on the freshman Simmons. He was at Trotwood last year but always had plans to come back to Alter. He can really play. He's about 5'11"- 6'0" with a nice body and good strength. Needs to work on his jumper but see's the floor real well and defends. I see him getting varsity minutes at some point this year if Alter wants to compete.

Wow, sounds like Alter will be unbeatable this year. Centerville won't have a chance when they play February 16 at Trent Arena.

Thanks for the recap daytonbball. Great analysis...sounds like a solid team. From what I saw this summer from Alter it looks like they may get a slow start due to football but will be more than competitive. Looks like we have alot of Centerville fans on here bashing Alter, should be a good game. Speaking of Centerville...I don't see them adding another District title to the THREE they have now.

Actually, Centerville has four district titles -2002, 2003, 2005, and 2009. They may not get to a district final game this season, though.

Sorry...you are correct, I forgot about last year. I guess that small number got lost in the shuffle compared to the 24 that Alter has won.

Alter

Guys, I am not an Alter fan. I'm actually a CJ guy. But I know Alter really well. Trust me, when they get the football kids in shape they will be formidable. J. White was a cancer last year. They will get better just from him leaving. He did nothing the 2nd half of the season.

Adkins is good and in Zuko and Fresh they have 2 of the best 3 point shooters potentially in the area on the same team defending all 3 when playing at the same time will be a challenge.

Cummings is a great defender especially at the top of that 1-3-1 they run. The football kids inside Tuney and Bockrath will be physical. And I didnt even mention 6'7" soph Greg Heiney who might help there too.

I am not saying they will be great. Just that they have a chance to be pretty good. Laravey and Peno played freshman last year and probably wont play see varstiy action this year. All that means is that they are setup to be good fore the next 3-4 years and get petro the wins he needs to overtake kortakrax.

Who holds the all time single game scoring record at Alter high? Is it Tim Graham?
He scored 50 points in a game against Oakwood in 1969.

They lost way to much in my opinion to compete with CJ this year in the GCL North. Losing White will be good for them though.

Simmons going to Alter is a complete joke. How does this kid end up at Alter?

Maybe Gary Trick (1960's)? IDK.

Didn't James Naismith go to Alter too? I think he graduated from there just before he invented the game.

Actually I believe Naismith was still at Alter when he invented hoops. Wasn't he the one who hired Petrocelli?

Doc......you're right. In listening to the Alter gang self righteousness, I should have realized he was still at Alter when he invented the game.
What was I thinking!
