Announcement of Dayton player for Switzerland

Link to the Schweizerischer American Football Verband in Switzerland announcing the Calanda Broncos preseason news. (Remember, Google translations are only the words so that sometimes the verb is in a different position, often at the end. The team is in Chur, the Grison's is their mountain region and no Americans return from 2011.)

Thumbs up Former Comet Gets Coaching Promotion

The continuity in Dayton football coaching continued with today's announcement:

(Head-coach) Chamberlin also announced that former Flyer QB Kevin Hoyng will move from tight ends coach to quarterbacks coach, and Kevin McCoy, a former UD defensive back [and former Solon Comet] , has been elevated to a full-time position on the staff.

McCoy will continue to coach the secondary, as he has for the last two seasons, but he will add the duties of recruiting coordinator. McCoy is no stranger to the Flyers’ secondary, as he was a member of the group from 2003 to 2006. As a player, he earned both a letter and was named the AJ Cohen Flyer of the Year in 2006, an award that speaks for the character of its recipient.

“We’re very fortunate to elevate Kevin (McCoy) to full-time status and keep him on our staff,” Chamberlin said. “He was one of those guys who you just knew when he played he was made to be a coach. He will continue to coach in the secondary and have the additional responsibility of serving as our recruiting coordinator.”

Following graduation, McCoy used his degree in AYA Education to teach and coach one season at Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. He then took his whistle to Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. for two seasons, where he was cornerback coach and assistant strength coach.

Great chance to see Spring Practice video

Former Dayton QB & now coach of the QB's Kevin Hoyng has provided the Alumni with a peek at some practice play & scrimmage. With four former Comets slated to be on this season's squad, the interest in this stuff at this thread should be growing.

In the video both former Comets in spring practice are on the white team. #20 with bulky braces on both knees is Joe Janasek. The "white" team QB with #9 green shirt is Jake Voigt. The "lefty" #3 is Will Bardo.

What is fun is to see each play from several cameras & to see in the chart the play type, formation, name of play, def. front, def. coverage. If Kevin marks on the screen, you will have to hit the forward arrow to resume action.

When you get to the "Dashboard" site, click on the photo of the top entry & then probably click the blue arrow for the first play. You can chose full screen mode because it will advance through all the plays BUT, you lose the chart with the names.

Go to www.hudl.com
enter user name or email: UDfball@gmail.com
enter Password: UDfootball1

Next Sunday, April 22nd, at 1:00 is the annual spring game that ends the allowable spring practice season. If the two new Flyers, Stuart & Schwenke attend that game, they will meet the team & their "Big Brother" who can help guide them in their first fall camp.

good luck Flyers, good luck Comets

Voigt & Janasek on winning Red Team

DAYTON, Ohio – Red prevailed 14-0 over White in the University of Dayton’s annual Spring Football Game Sunday at Welcome Stadium.

“I really think our wide receivers have been the biggest surprise this spring,” said UD Head Coach Rick Chamberlin. “Today they made some fantastic catches on balls that weren’t thrown great.”

Red was up 7-0 after the first quarter with the help of a seven-yard TD pass from redshirt freshman Jake Voigt to sophomore Robert Strong with 4:40 to play.

Johnson completed 15-of-26 pass attempts while Voigt was 6-of-9 passing.

Joe Janasek also played for the winning Red Team. Fans were talking about the hit he made in the second half. We could hear the oohs & aahs on the radio broadcast & the head Coach was on the air with his praise of the gut-hit Janasek delivered. If LB is the defensive concern, a big hit goes a long way for Joe!

In attendance were 25 of the 31 recruits. They were short on OL so 10 are linemen & 5 are LB. These are also the largest size OL recruits in the teams history. After the game, recruits were introduced to their "BIG BROTHER" who will help guide them during fall camp. Hope our two Comet recruits were there. This was so exciting to player Sal Salvatore, that when he learned of his Little Brother, he jumped for joy!

The story photos would not transfer for me, here's a link to it & photo gallery

Steve Valentino Scores on "Fumble-Rooskie" Trick

Valentino Scores on a “Fumble-Rooski” trick Play in Switzerland

There are several ways to run the “Fumble-Rooskie” play and in the Swiss version, the ball never touches the ground – very close though. QB Marco Glavic takes a direct snap from center but stands back at the full reach of his arms. With ball in hand he lowers it where a low crouching Steve Valentino who is hiding behind the guard snatches it from his hands. Marko makes a full spin & heads left with his RB & line.

Meantime, Valentino remains crouched low for a second, and then runs barely noticed to the left & forward 55 yards to pay dirt. The Calanda Broncos have used the former Solon High Comet & Pioneer League star from the University of Dayton in about every way possible with the ball. Apparently the Broncos don’t pooch punt, another of his college skills.

Comet in Euro Bowl

Valentino to Play in Euro Bowl 2012

The Calanda Bronco season ends along with former Solon Comet/Dayton Flyer Steve Valentino’s football adventure in Switzerland this Saturday in the 26th Annual Euro Bowl of American Football. Along with the Austrian opponent, the Vienna Vikings; they are the two representing 1200 clubs in 30 countries who play American Football. The Broncos are the 2012 Swiss champs and won quarter & semi-final playoffs in Austria as the underdog’s claw their way to history.

The Swiss earned the right to host the game but without large enough facilities in Chur (population 33,000), they engaged the RhinePark Stadium a half-hour drive north just over the famous river in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The only meeting ever of the two teams was last year when the Vikings beat the Broncos 19-14 in the quarter-finals. The Bronco offense is much more explosive this season and baring injury, they should score many more points. Valentino will start at slot receiver, punt returner & holder for placekicks. He sometimes lines up in the Wildcat formation and also plays QB if needed.

With luck we may be able to see it for the first time via live-streaming in 56 countries on EuroSport2 at noon Saturday, July 21st.

["In Ten Minutes to Success"- he turned this game around]

"...and a personality, Steve Valentino, as fast and nimble as the wind! "

Former Comets on the Dayton Grass

The 2012 Dayton Flyers were in camp meetings all of first day. Day 2 started with Fitness Tests in morning, evening meetings with playbooks and the first practice with helmets only in the afternoon.

Faced with perhaps their toughest schedule ever, the theme for 2012 is "Step Up". Every practice/every game there are opportunities for somebody to Step Up with a play. The closest game to Solon is Sept.8th at Duquesne.

The Flyer roster includes:
Kevin McCoy...coach-secondary
#9 Jake Voigt
#20 Joe Janasek
#41 Ryan Schwenke
#83 Cory Stuart

The is the grass practice field with the first workout. The UD Arena- background center has football locker room. Welcome Field light towers can be seen in left background & in the center, the Marriott Hotel.

Getting Ready to "Step UP"

Preparations have begun for Saturday's (Sept. 1st) big first game against 12th ranked Illinois State in Normal, IL. The 2012 theme is "Step Up" & the schedule certainly is a step up. Young Coach Kevin Hoyng "Stepped Up" & mailed a Daily Diary of the 16 days of summer camp to each parent. This kind of new communication is a breath of fresh air in UD football.

Coach Hoyng explained the plan & reasoning & result for every practice. Two-a-days are not allowed back-to-back, but evening meetings proliferate. Every game situation is covered including sudden changes when during some work the coach blows a whistle & immediately changes to a situation. They traveled to the Athlete's in Action Complex in Xenia to experience a new environment since they have no scrimmages with other teams.

On a Saturday morning they helped the freshmen arrivals & that night scrimmaged to close out campus orientation day. One night they dined with the Pride of Dayton band members & another hot afternoon the coach took them to a movie.

Here's the Media Day photo:

Joe, Jake, Coach McCoy, Ryan, Cory
Good Luck former Comets, now Flyers!

Janasek-Voigt-Schwenke play at Normal, IL

Stepping Up the schedule this season was tough since the opponent, Illinois State, is ranked 19/20 in all of FCS land and the Dayton Flyers have a slew of new faces with an unproven offense. ISU was as fast as UD & that was with about a 30#/man advantage! Can you think Solon vs. Glenville?
Final 56-14

Joe Janasek starts at LB & I saw him on the KO team. (at least the Flyers continue to avoid a shutout since 1976) Joe had 1-solo & 8-assists

Jake Voigt tried to operate for the final 7 minutes but the big rush was brutal. He completed one pass for 8 yds.

Surprise of the game was that"four freshmen" played. And one was Ryan Schwenke! He entered with about 13:30 left to play & had a solo tackle. HOF Coach Kelly doing the radio said that Schwenke was playing the "Flyer Position". Don't know if that is true since they barely used it last year but if it is - Ryan has a chance to shine in it. It is a hybrid position where the player plays safety or linebacker depending upon the expected play. IOW, the player is put where the ball is expected to go!

The "boyz" will be in Pittsburgh Saturday noon to play Duquesne & that will be a more reasonable match-up although the Dukes will be favored...again!

Flyers Beat RMU...again!

Dayton posted a 20-14 score on Robert Morris for their 13 win in 15 games against the Colonials. In 6 of the past 9 meetings, RMU had more total yards than Dayton.

The four players from Solon were on one sideline facing an opponent with players from Chagrin Falls, Stow & Kenston. Jake Voigt held for the X-tra points & Joe Janasek played the Flyer position on defense. He had 5 tackles incl. one for a loss. Often he was guarding an experienced TE who at 6'4" & 235# was a load for Joe.

So how does Dayton win? They scored TD's every time in the red zone! And, the drives were short, 30, 42 & 52 yards. The rest of the game was make a few 1st downs & punt it well. On defense, put the opposing QB & offense on it's heals once a quarter.

Not pretty, but the Flyers have a first win, AND, they are now 400 games since being shutout by Marshall U. in 1976! That's an NCAA record folks!!! (NCAA called after #399 & said that they didn't know what to call it. Div 1 where UD played has a record by Brigham Young, Div III where they played has a record by Mount Union & Div.1-A (FCS) has the Montana record)

Janasek, Voigt, Schwenke help Flyers Win Three

Three of the former Comets are helping the 2012 Dayton football team get back to a respectable 4-4 record with three straight wins.

Quarterback Jake Voigt has seen playing time at QB & is the holder for place kicks. Freshman Ryan Schwenke is the backup "Flyer Position" (a hybrid LB/DB) to Joe janasek. I saw all three play at Davidson two weeks ago.

On Saturday, Janasek had his best game & was rewarded by the following:

JANASEK, JACOB EARN NATIONAL FOOTBALL HONORS

October 22, 2012

Two University of Dayton football players have earned national accolades from pair of websites devoted intercollegiate athletics coverage. Senior Flyer Joe Janasek was named CollegeSportsMadness.com’s Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, while redshirt senior running back Dan Jacob was one of eight PFL players honored by collegefootballperformance.com.
Janasek, who plays the hybrid safety/linebacker position known as “Flyer” in the Dayton defensive system, had a career-high 14 tackles and broke up two passes in Saturday’s 45-0 win over Valparaiso. It was UD’s first shutout of the season.
On the season, the 2009 Solon (Ohio) High School graduate is Dayton’s second leading tackler (57 hits). He also is the co-leader in QB hurries (3) and is third in tackles behind the line (5.0).

Senior Day

This week the Dayton Flyers have a tough final home game opponent in Drake. Last week the Flyers did poorly out in San Diego & returned with several more players lost for the season.

Joe Janasek did not make the trip to California & is not available this week as he suffers from bruised ribs. His back-up, Ryan Schwenke started at the "Flyer Back" position & he played about 1/3rd of the plays (running situations). Ryan had 4 tackles with 3 of them "tackles for loss".

To show the importance of this game, in the past 19 years in the PFL, either Drake or Dayton has been the champ or co-champ 16 times!!!

So for Senior Day today, here are the 27 seniors or 5th-year seniors playing their last home game. Joe is #20 on the right of the photo. (#37 LB Matt Dorenkott, Hudson; #64 C Bill Petraiuolo, Mayfield)

Flyers Deliver Senior Day Upset Win 28-13

It was cold with wind & light rain at Welcome but the Flyers sent league leading Drake back to DesMoines with their first PFL loss on Saturday.

Freshman Ryan Schwenke started again for Joe Janasek (rib injury) and Ryan delivered 6 tackles with 2 for losses incl. a sack! he just missed an intercept on a diving attempt off his hands. Jake Voigt did not play QB but held for extra point kicks & a FG attempt.

The Seniors with their families enjoyed pre & post game activity despite the weather. The season wraps up next Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY at Marist University.

Here's #20, Senior Joe:

Flyers End with a Win in NY Area

Dayton's travel unit was up north of the Big City for their final game of the season. The 21-17 win, a very emotional win for the players & seniors against the Marist Red Foxes assured that Dayton had a winning season (6-5) after a tough start & many, many injuries. It is the 35th winning season in 36 years!

Former Comet roll call:

Senior Joe Janasek played a little after sitting two weeks with rib injuries.

RS Soph Jake Voigt held for place kicks

FR Ryan Schwenke started on defense (for Joe) & had an intercept!

FR Cory Stuart was selected offensive scout player of the week for his practice performance; second time this season!

Janasek Named to Academic All-PFL Team

Pioneer Football League Announces 20th Annual Academic All-PFL Teams

Dayton has two members each on the first team offensive and defensive squads. Senior slot receiver Robert Strong, redshirt sophomore running back Grant Huckstein, senior Flyer Joe Janasek and sophomore safety Matt Bianco were all named to the first team.

Janasek is a senior from Solon, Ohio. He has a 3.55 grade point average in Pre-Physical Therapy. Despite being sidelined two games with injuries, he was third on the team in tackles (58) and quarterback hurries (3). He also had five tackles in the backfield and three pass breakups.

The University of Dayton football team had 10 of its student-athletes named to the Pioneer Football League’s 2012 All-Academic Team. This is the ninth straight season, and the 18th in the 20-year history of the league, that UD has had the most academic team members.

71 UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

February 21, 2013

The University of Dayton Flyer football team garnered recognition for its team member's success in the classroom for the 2012 fall semester, with 72 student-athletes named to the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll. It is the 18th time in the 20-year history of the PFL that Dayton had the most team members on the honor roll.

It was also the second time UD had more than 70 members on the honor roll. The Flyers had a school-record 74 last season.

Following UD were Drake (62), Butler (61) and Drake (59).

The honor roll, established as a way for the league to recognize its outstanding student athletes, consists of student-athletes that posted a 3.0 grade point average or better during the fall semester.

Dayton Spring Game Sunday

The UD Spring Football Game is Sunday, April 14th at 1:00 after a Youth Clinic that starts at 11:00am.

With the 15 allowable spring practices completed, Coach Chamberlin singled out five Freshmen for their work including former Comet WR Cory Stuart.

Cory red-shirted last year; may see some action in this fall season which begins Thursday night, August 29th at Youngstown State!

Freshman Trackster Paige Yeager Doing Well

Lest we forget spring sports, the UD Women's Track & Field Team has a former Comet hurdler, Paige Yeager, who has been placing well in the middle of this season.

She runs the 400m hurdlers & I'm not sure that is at every meet - many are Invitationals & Classics with many teams represented in 2 & 3-day events. This is for sure:

All-Ohio Championship (Athens, OH) she scored 2 valuable points with a time of 1:06.10

Miami Invitational (Oxford, OH) 3rd place 1:04.22

Oliver Nikoloff Invitational (Cincinnati) 5th place 1:05.26
