Kentucky basketball legend 'King' Kelly Coleman dies at age 80

I know that we have a few Kentucky people on here. Heard stories about him as being one of the first major HS basketball stars.

Kelly Coleman – better-known as “King” Kelly Coleman after becoming the all-time leading scorer in Kentucky high school basketball history – died Sunday. He was 80.

Gary West, author of “King Kelly Coleman: Kentucky’s Greatest Basketball Legend,” said Coleman had been battling cancer and was living in his hometown of Wayland, Ky.

“In my mind, he’s the biggest legend who ever played in this state,” West said.

Coleman played at Wayland High School in eastern Kentucky from 1952-56 and scored 4,337 career points. As a senior, Coleman averaged 46.8 points and was named the third winner of Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball award.
