Best GlenOak Alumni Athlete

I saw this topic on another thread, so I thought it would be interesting to post on here.

Who do you all think is the best athlete to ever come from GlenOak, taking into account their careers at GlenOak, in college, and in the pros (if applicable). Please also give a reason or two why you picked that athlete. GlenOak's been lucky to have some outstanding athletes walk through the halls of the school, let's see who's the best of the best!

The candidates:
*Dan Dierdorf - All-American at the University of Michigan in 1970, 2000 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Six times selected to the Pro Bowl in the NFL, 3-time NFL All-Pro, 1996 NFL Hall of Fame inductee

*Dustin Fox - First-team Division I Associated Press All-Ohio selection on defense as a junior and senior, Rushed for 2,500 yards and 38 touchdowns in his career, Second team All Big Ten senior year at Ohio State, Was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round in 2005, Currently is playing in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles

*Derek Fox - All-American senior year of high school, Team MVP his senior season, 4-year letterwinner at Penn State, Was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts

*Brian Hartline - 3-year letterwinner in high school, Was considered one of the top athletes in the state before breaking leg at the beginning of his senior season of football, State champion in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles senior year, Runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles junior year, Only freshman hurdler at the 2003 National Meet in North Carolina, Currently a wide receiver at Ohio State

*Derek Williams - Two-time state champ in the 300-meter hurdles junior and senior years of high school, Won the 400-meter hurdles at the adidas Track Classic this year which helped him gain a sponsorship deal from Reebok, Currently is trying out for the 2008 Summer Olympic Team

*Other athlete not mentioned (please say who your pick would be if you select Other)

It is hard to vote against a guy that is in one Hall of Fame let alone two of them. Also, Dierdorfs county record in the shot put either still stands or stood until just recently.

Others that probably need to be considered are Mike Moore, Tim Fox, Otis Williams, Greg Smith, Mark Murphy and Todd Dean. There are also several others that could be considered in other sports such as Heather Lyke, Marsha Cleveland and Mike Paxos whom all excelled in sports other than football.

TALLEY, any specific reason to why you think McCollum should be considered? He sure was a good basketball player for the Eagles the past few seasons, and has now moved on to Goshen College where he and Nate West will be playing together.

First of all - this is somewhat misleading. Are you talking only about GLENOAK - or are you talking about all of Plain's high schools (i.e. Middlebranch, Glenwood, Oakwood, GlenOak)? Because remember - Dierdorf didn't go to GlenOak, he went to Glenwood.

If it's for ALL of the Plain high schools, Dierdorf wins hands down. Noone else even comes close. Course if you weren't born before 1980 - you might not know that.

If it's only GlenOak, then it's kind of tough. I'd say Dustin Fox is probably the front runner with Brian Hartline hot on his heels.

Polar, sorry this was misleading. I meant for ALL of Plain Locals schools, including Glenwood, Oakwood, and Middlebranch.

And I was born in 1986, so I have more knowledge of people such as Dustin Fox and Hartline than Dierdorf, though from tapes I've seen of him and from hearing from people who watched him he was an excellent athlete at all levels of play.

we need to not forget about Cleve Bryant, Mark Murphy, Ed Kenny graduated in 1991. Mike Herman who played 3 sports and I think made all federal in all three sports graduated in 1990. Ottis Williams went on to play at Michigan.Fermin Olivera who might be the best over all athlete to come out of Glenoak.I know Plain local football like the back of my hand, believe me there were some great athletes to come from our school ill put our top 10 up against anyones including mckinley and massillions.

Do we forget that the Eagles won back to back state titles in Baseball? Better add the Muzi brothers to the list!

No worries, GOGE. However, it is VERY hard to compete with an NFL hall of famer....very hard to compete with those credentials.

Rick Thompson

I agree with the Deirdorf submission. He is an NFL HOF-er. Hard to argue.

We could take another thread with the question. While Deirdorf made an impact at many different levels--HS, college, and professional..... Rick Thompson make a huge difference for GlenOak teams while he was at GlenOak. If we make the standard "Federal League Championships], I would be interested to see who stacks up the most across football, basketball, baseball, track.

Great 2 sport player. Great shortstop on Federal Leage championship teams and played for the Houston Astros. Rocket arm, awesome glove and great hitter. Also, started as junior on Federal League champ 78 basketball team and was Federal league leading scoring in 79, wasn't he?

Another good two sport athlete was Mike Fidelholz. A DOMINATING left handed pitcher for two Federal League championship teams. Too bad he blew his arm out in college--pitched a no-hitter against Ohio State his freshman year. 6 or 7th man on the 77 Federal League championship basketball team. Scoring leader for the 78 Federal League champs. 6'4" wing man who could rebound, score, pass.

You could compile a list of at least 100 great athletes to come out of GlenOak (Glenwood/Oakwood included). Dierdorf, Mark Murphy, all the Fox's (Tim, Derrik, Dustin), Mike Moore, Greg Smith, Scott Garcia, Mike Patt, Rob Rastetter, Scott Mercer, Carlyn Burt, Otis Williams, Brandon Long, Bednar, Brian Hartline, the Bucklew brothers, the Muzi brothers, Todd Dean, Brian Villono, Mike Williams, the list is endless. GlenOak hands down has produced some awesome athletes.

If I am not mistaken though, the last coach with back to back Federal League Football titles was the great Bob Commings! Maybe it's time to bring back an ex-Commings player (Garcia) to coach the Eagles back to a winning football program????

glenoak

You sure know some of the history behind glenoak football, those were some good players on that list that you mentioned. I do agree with your comment on Scott Gargia, I think he could bring back a winning attitude to GlenOak.

It is obvious that many of those writing here never had a chance to see TIM FOX perform in football, basketball or track & field. Rated on athelticism and performance TIM FOX would be #1.

I have known Dan Dierdorf back in the 1968 and played head to head against him in high school. Watch him set the shot put record. My wife when to school with Dan and because of the last name alway sat behind him. However they made a agreement to switch seats. The Plain school system has produced some great athletes. As a play and a person they don't make many Dan Dierdorf
