LICKING COUNTY FAN is on a distinguished road
Last night at Steinecker Stadium the N.W.Ohio all star game took place in front of a nice size crowd, who at times were a little vocal at for, for an all star game. Overall this was a decent played game, between a group of young men, who actually seemed like they wanted to win, even though this was just an all star game.
On the opening kickoff the Gold team coughed the ball up and making the recovery for the black team was,Valjon Foster(Start)at the Gold's 30 yard line.
The Black team would take four plays to score the games first points. The points came on the fourth play of the drive and it was a touchdown pass from Devon Ragland(Start)to Lonnie Wyse(Toledo St. Francis)With 10:01 left in the first quarter. The point after from,Tate Smith(Oak Harbor) made this a 7-0 game.

Dense and misplays ruled most of the opening quarter, but with 5:22 showing on the clock Dawson Rupp(Wauson)of the Gold team got to Blake Osborn for a short loss. The Black team would recover from that play, with 4:43 left facing a fourth and two Ragland used his feet to pick up five yards to move the chains. Ragland, who seem to be a run first throw second quarterback, would use his arm to connect with the very talented Jasean Rader(Whitmer) for a fourteen yard score. The threat of Ragland running allowed his receiver to be wide opened in the left corner of the end zone. The point after making this a 14-0 game, with 3:49 left in the quarter.

The Gold team would get a nice nine yard run from Jarrett Mass(Patrick Henry)quarterback, who was the only quarterback used by the Gold team. Then with 2:32 showing on the clock, Mass found Noah Edwards(Genoa) for a twenty three yard gain. Alex Gayle(Toledo St. John's (RB) was stuffed by Greg Pachlhofer (Swanton) , with 2:04 left in the quarter.Pachlhofer would play a nice game, when all was said and done. The drive from the Gold would continue when Devon Cleghorn(Maumee)picked up fourteen yards on a nice run, that could have gone for more if not for a nice tackle from Pachlhofer, with 1:47 left in a long opening quarter.

With 10:57 left in the half Ragland opted to take off, when he faced a little pressure and this move was proven to be a bad one, when he was sacked by Cam Sauber (Wauseon) and I believe Zach Nihart (Edgerton) The drive went nowhere and a punt from future Toledo Rocker, Austin Long(Whitmer) would soon follow.

The Gold team had some good news, bad news happen to them with 8:55 left in the half. The good news was a completion to Justin Schneider (Maumee) but the ball was stripped by Justyn Allen(Toledo St. Francis) and he also recovered it to make the bad news even worse for the Gold team.

Just ten second later the Black team would go to their bag of tricks, with a handoff from Ragland to Austin Eick(Rossford) who faked a run and threw a pass that,Pat Mappe (Whitmer) made a sweet adjustment to make the catch and pick up sixty two yards. This brought the 1,800 fans to their feet, with a loud cheer. The drive ended seconds later when Ragland fumbled the ball and Kalil Frames(Bowsher) made the recovery. Frames was another player, who seemed to be solid and looked like he was having fun playing in this game.

The half had 3:35 left, when Devon Cleghorn(Maumee)picked up ten yards on a nice powerful run. Cleghorn was a man in this game as he picked up large chunks of yards time and time again. Nothing came after this and the Black team would get the ball back a short time later.

With 2:17 showing on the clock Rupp got his third tackle for a loss, when he got to Rader in the backfield forcing a six yard loss. Like I said earlier, Rupp had a good game. In the program Rupp was listed as a punter/wide receiver. The last big play of the half came when Mass was picked off by Pachlhofer. with 1:29 showing on the clock.

The Gold team was in need of a big play, facing a third and long trailing by fourteen, with 8:55 left in the third and a big play they got. The play was a completion from Mass to Ty Bezek (Perrysburg)that was good for fifteen yards. The Gold team got another big play, with 4:31 left in the quarter ,when Edwards picked up thirty yards, he was pushed out of bounds by Jacob Benson(Lake)

There was a little under 3:00 left in the quarter , when Pachlhofer got to Edwards for a two yard loss.
Pachlhofer played like was the biggest game he had played in to date, at least it appeared that way.

The Gold team would get a nice play by Zach Henline(Eastwood)when he took his turn at getting Ragland for a loss, this one was for four yards, with 1:29 left in the quarter.

Twenty seconds into the final frame the Gold team was able to get a thirty yard run from North West (Liberty Center) but the drive came to an abrupt end nine seconds later, when Mass had his pass tipped and then picked off by Pachlhofer on his own fifteen yard line. The Black team's defense always seem to come up with a big play, when the Gold team looked poised to strike for a score.

With 9:36 another tip pass was caught, but this time it was for a big game by the Black team. After the ball was tipped by the Gold's team,Everett Bueter(Wauson) Rader made a sweet catch to pick up twenty three yards.Eick, who was listed as a WR/DB in the program was in at quarterback for the Black team and he connected with Rader for a thirty yard gain.Rader, who will play at Cincinnati Christian University looks poised to be a force there, if this game was any indication of his future. The ten play, eighty five yard drive came to a climax on a five yard run by Chris Pickett (Rossford). The point after making this a 21-0 game, with 8:27 left.

Mass would connect with Shaun Enright( Cardinal Stritch) for a thirty eight yard pick up, with 5:41 left.
Then with 4:05 left in the game, Cleghorn pounded in for a four yard score. The point after from Chase Wilcox(Findlay) made this a 21-7 game and that would also be the final score.

VERY UNOFFICIAL STATS

GOLD TEAM
67 PLAYS
314 YARDS
PASSING
10-25 2 INT'S

BLACK TEAM
64 PLAYS
251 YARDS
7-17 2 TD'S

Not having a lot to compare to, I will say this game seems always played to win. The coaching staffs do a great job of getting the kids supportive of each other, even though at least some leagues get split. So everyone is playing against kids they've played against and with kids they've never played against. It's not league against league or burbs against city....

I don't know, is it normal to have all-star games like this, farm kids, small town kids and city kids, big school, small school, public and private?

Nice to see the Whitmer kids do well.

I believe former Perrysburg HC and AD Ray Pohlman started this game in 1990 (?) and has done a really good job.

I think they could have two All-Star games IMO. Something like TRAC/TCL vs. NLL/NBC and perhaps an SBC vs. NWOAL/TAAC. Just a thought.

FYP

and didn't we already have the talk about you thinking? You'll only sprain something.

I'm a fan of the set-up as is, for reasons mentioned. I like the mix not just of players but of people in the stands.

Did not realize Pohlman was a Macomber grad?

I like the set-up as well. Just getting nit-picky.

Sometimes the kids from the very small schools cannot compete, but sometimes they do very well.

If anyone wants to create another all star game they are free to do so. The Perrysburg game covers a lot of schools. There might be enough for two games.

Wasn't there an All-Star game in your neck of the woods not to long ago? SBC vs. NOL or something along those lines? Perhaps I'm thinking Fostoria?

I believe the Fostoria game still exists.

There used to be a SBC vs. SLL game. The last game was in 2011.

I coached in the Perrysburg game twice, once as an assistant, once as a head coach. It was fun.
