"Yellow Jacket 600" speeds by Pacers

Mount Vernon 62, Delaware Hayes 34

DELAWARE -- Mount Vernon's offense put up over 600 yards of total offense on the Delaware Hayes Pacers and the two teams fell 11 yards shy of 1,000 for the game in the Yellow Jackets' 62-34 Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division victory over Hayes Saturday at Gauthier Field.

Mount Vernon (3-3, 1-0) dominated Hayes (1-5, 0-1) through much of the game. The Yellow Jackets gained 643 yards of total offense, 504 of that on the ground, and had 447 yards of total offense in the first half alone.

The Jackets scored early and often in that first 24 minutes, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter -- all on drives of four plays or less covering 50 yards or more.

Mount Vernon quarterback Anthony Castricone weaved his way through the Pacer defense 71 yards for the first touchdown of the game just 1:05 in. Running back Colby Emerson added a 19-yard touchdown run about 90 seconds later and Castricone connected with receiver Nick Jones on a 62-yard pass play for another score.

Hayes countered with a touchdown of their own not long after that when D.J. Saunders pounded over from the Mount Vernon two, but the Jackets got the score back when Emerson scored on a 36-yard run.

Mount Vernon poured it on in the second quarter, scoring three more times and taking a 48-7 lead into the locker room at the half. Colby Emerson scored from two yards out to put the Jackets ahead 34-7 with just under eight minutes left in the quarter, and Joe Lahmon added a five-yard touchdown run with under three minutes to play in the half. Castricone scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run with 15 seconds left.

But Hayes wouldn't give up, despite the score. The Pacers scored twice in the third, starting with Stelzer's five-yard pass to Ross Banaszak and again when Stelzer scrambled through the Mount Vernon defense 43 yards on a fourth-and-13 call.

Castricone scored again from four yards out to start the scoring in the final period, but Stelzer carried over from two yards out to get the points back. D.D. Melton capped the Mount Vernon scoring with 57 seconds left with a 30-yard run, but Stelzer connected with Ryan Kennedy for an 88-yard touchdown pass with 35 ticks remaining for the final count.

Emerson and Melton each ran for over 150 yards in the game, Emerson with 213 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries and Melton with 118 yards on 18 carries with one TD. Castricone connected on 4-of-9 passes for 139 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran six times for 93 yards and three more scores.

Jones, Melton, Marcus Ortman and Sean Thompson each had a reception for the Yellow Jackets, Melton's for a gain of 57 yards, Ortman's for 12 and Thompson's for eight.

Stelzer had trouble targeting receivers early on, but finished going 7-for-25 through the air for 178 yards and two touchdowns with one pick. Stelzer also added 39 yards on six carries with two touchdowns on the ground.

Kashta Ransaw led the Hayes rushers with 97 yards on eight carries and had two catches for 25 yards. D.J. Saunders carried 10 times for 33 yards with a touchdown and caught one pass for seven yards. Ross Banaszak added two catches for 10 yards and had a game-high 11 tackles. Ryan Dennis also had a reception for 48 yards.

Both teams travel for their next OCC Capital matchups, Mount Vernon visiting Pataskala to face Watkins Memorial and Hayes going to Sunbury for a contest against county rival Big Walnut.
