Indians attack tramples Barons, 30-0

Mount Gilead 30, Delaware Buckeye Valley 0

MOUNT GILEAD — The Mount Gilead Indians ran all phases of their attack to near perfection in a 30-0 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference victory over the Buckeye Valley Barons Friday at Mount Gilead High School.
The Mount Gilead (2-1, 1-1) offense was sharp, the defense strong and the special teams opportunistic. And all aspects of the Indian effort came up with big plays that helped kill whatever Buckeye Valley (1-2, 1-1) tried.
The Indians gained 334 yards of total offense to just 124 for the Barons and forced BV into five turnovers on three fumbles and two interceptions. But Mount Gilead's big plays, especially two early, gave them the momentum Buckeye Valley could never get back.
Buckeye Valley drove into Mount Gilead territory on their first possession, but Mount Gilead's Caleb Dettra picked off a Kyle Rehner pass and returned it 72 yards for the game's first touchdown with 7:43 to play in the first quarter.
Just over four minutes later, quarterback Evan Hartman capped the Indians' first possession with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Greg Gompf. Scott Mosher's extra point gave Mount Gilead a 14-0 lead and put Buckeye Valley back on its collective heels.
Meanwhile, the Indian defense did its job. The Indians allowed the Barons just three first downs and 53 yards of offense in the first half. The Indians had 191 yards of offense, 122 through the air.
Mosher added a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter to push the Indians' lead to 17, but the Indians added to it following another big play late in the period, this time by the special teams.
Hartman took a 30-yard Rehner punt at his own 47-yard line and returned it to the Buckeye Valley 10 before Jeremy Tiller could haul him down. Tyler Ragor scored three plays later from a yard out with just under two minutes left in the quarter to put the Indians ahead 24-0.
Mount Gilead did have problems with turnovers and penalties, but their mistakes didn't cost them as badly as Buckeye Valley's. The Indians fumbled twice and Hartman was picked off once, BV's Tom Dodge running back the pick 36 yards, but the Barons could only get to the Indian four-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Mount Gilead also threw away a golden opportunity late in the fourth quarter when on fourth and goal at the Baron two, Ragor was pinned in the backfield and latereled to Hartman, who was swarmed under by the Baron defense at the six.
But the Barons coughed up the ball on their first play of the following possession when Garrison Trainer forced Nathan Roberts to fumble and recovered the ball himself at the Baron three. Ragor carried the ball to paydirt on the very next play to close the scoring.
Ragor led all rushers for the Indians with 102 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns while Hartman completed 9-of-18 passes for 163 yards and two scores and rushed 12 times for 55 yards. Gompf also finished with a game-high five receptions for 113 yards.
Ryan Smart led the Baron rushers with 70 yards on 15 carries, but re-aggravated an ankle injury. Roberts completed 2-of-5 passes for 21 yards after Rehner was knocked out of the game in the third quarter.
Rehner completed 2-of-9 attempts, both for no gain, and was picked off twice, the second time by Mount Gilead's Bracken Henry, who returned the ball 34 yards. Jeremy Tiller had two receptions for 21 yards to lead the Baron receivers.
Both teams travel in MOAC play next week, Buckeye Valley visiting Richwood to face the North Union Wildcats and Mount Gilead venturing to Sparta to face the Highland Fighting Scots. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. next Friday night.
