Mansfield Senior grinds out win

Mansfield Senior 30, Sandusky 14

MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield Senior High Tygers used their passing game in the first half and their run attack in the second to defeat the Sandusky Blue Streaks 30-14 Friday night in non-conference play at Arlin Field.

Mansfield Senior (2-0) racked up 119 of their 158 yards passing in the first 24 minutes, and had 193 of their 257 yards on the ground in the final half. The Tygers finished with 415 yards of total offense to 251 for visiting Sandusky (1-1). Mansfield had just nine possessions in the game, and scored on five of them.

The Blue Streaks held the lead just once in the game, but stayed with Mansfield Senior through the first half into the third quarter. But the Tygers shut down Sandusky's run game that had notched 111 yards of offense in the first half, allowing just 24 rushing yards the rest of the way.

Hollister Histed got the scoring started, hitting a 25-yard field goal with 2:06 left in the first quarter to put Mansfield Senior ahead, but Sandusky took the lead early in the second period when Trevor Dehn capped a nine-play, 67 yards drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak, giving the Streaks a 7-3 edge.

But Mansfield came back as Andrew Molyet and Jamario O'Neal hooked up on a 59-yard scoring pass, putting the Tygers ahead, as it turned out, for good, 9-7. But the scoring was not over.

Mansfield Senior drove 64 yards in nine plays and capped it with a Leeo Miller 19-yard run with 1:20 left in the half, giving the Tygers a 16-7 lead at the half.

Sandusky took advantage of an interception by Deron Pickens on the first drive of the second half, then drove 64 yards on 10 plays, closing it out with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Dehn to Ryan Baker that helped the Blue Streaks close to within two points, 16-14. But just four plays after the kickoff, the Tygers got the points back when Jamario O'Neal took an end around 59 yards for the score.

Mansfield Senior used their running game to kill the clock in the final period. The Tygers held the ball for almost 10 of the 12 minutes in the period and scored the final touchdown with 21 seconds to play on a one-yard run by Miller.

Senior's David Phillips did the bulk of the work on the ground, carrying 21 times for a game-high 120 yards. O'Neal carried twice for 66 yards, Miller 10 times for 52 and Joshua Harkness five times for 21 yards. Andrew Molyet had a strong passing night, completing 9-of-14 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown. O'Neal and Dane Greer each had 71 yards receiving, Greer with four catches and O'Neal three.

Denarius Walk also had a strong game on the ground for Sandusky, carrying 22 times for 115 yards. But no other rusher for the Blue Streaks had more than 14 yards. Dehn completed 7-of-15 passes to six different receivers for 116 yards and a touchdown. Nate Matthews had two catches for 30 yards to lead Sandusky.
