Covington Downs Twin Valley South, 39-7

Friday, August 30, 2002 – W. ALEXANDRIA
The Buccs started out slow as they had a hard time moving the ball on their first two possessions. Finally, Boomer Schmidt got things going with a 23-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put the Buccs up 7-0.

Then, Brady Reck broke open the flood gates by returning an interception 58 yards for another score midway through the second quarter to put the Buccs up 13-0. On the Buccs' next drive, Brady called his own number from 11 yards out to put the Buccs up 19-0 at the half.

While the Buccs struggled at times on offense, the Buccaneer defense was dominating. Dusty Hess took over the game on defense…spending most of the night in the South backfield. Number 78 harrassed South's quarterback on a number of occasions. When he wasn't drapped all over him for a quarterback sack, Hess was knocking down passes before they could cross the line of scrimmage. It was an impressive performance by Hess as he single handidly disrupted the South offensive gameplan.

While Hess and the defense continued to dominate in the second half, the Buccaneer offense started to find their groove. Boomer Schmidt broke loose for another long touchdown run while Jordan Shafer took a screen pass 48 yards for a score of his own.

Twin Valley South managed to reach the endzone as well but it was too little, too late for the Panthers. South's Steve Byrd broke loose in the third quarter for a 49-yard touchdown run, but the Buccs had already built a lead they would not relinguish with the way they were playing defense. When the final seconds ran off of the clock, the Buccs celebrated a 39-7 victory.

To lead the Buccs on offense was Boomer Schmidt who ran 19 times for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns while Jordan Shafer racked up 64 yards on 4 receptions and one touchdown from 48 yards out. Brady Reck was also solid as he completed 7 passes for 115 yards and 1 touchdown while running for a touchdown of his own.

The Buccs raise their record to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the CCC while South drops to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the CCC. Next the Buccs host National Trail in another CCC battle.
