Big play Wildcats down Bearcats 26-6
On a mucky night at Memorial Stadium in Spencerville last Friday, visiting Minster Wildcats made themselves right at home on the Bearcats home field. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but after a fumbled punt return by Minster at their own 10 yard line early in the second quarter, Spencerville Senior Running Back Joel Lee rumbled 10 yards for the first score of the game and added six points for the Bearcats before the extra point was missed.
After a few back and forth efforts from both teams, the Wildcats began to show signs of brilliance. Wildcat Ty Parks dove in from 2 yards out to give Minster a 12-6 lead due to a missed extra point attempt. Their second score came midway through the second quarter with Quarterback Alex Stricker throwing a 63 yard bomb to Wide Reciever Scott Sherman, but the ensuing pass for 2 more points failed. The score stood 12-6 at the half.
Minster, apparently motivated at the half came out and showed more of their big play offense with the opening kickoff of the second half being returned 82 yards for a touchdown by Mark Stueve, and unlike it's previous touchdown, the point after from the foot of Dustin Sommer connected, giving the visitors a 20-6 lead.
As the beginning of the fourth quarter rolled around, the Bearcats were eating up the clock, trying to get back into the game, but the Wildcats kept trying to hit the final nail in the Spencerville coffin and keep it there, which they did with a 5 yard run from Ty Parks and a successful kick from Sommer.
Minster ended up winning the game 26-6 and improving to 1-0, with Spencerville falling to 0-1. Spencerville outgained Minster in ever statistical category, but came up short to their rival Wildcats in this years season opener, mostly due to Minster connecting on a couple of big plays, and a couple of key fumbles by the Bearcats.
