Article: Wayne Wins Hard Fought Battle vs Fairmont 23-13
Fairmont's bid to upset Wayne's Senior Night falls short as they lose a hard fought, physical game 23-13. The Firebirds dominated this game in nearly every aspect except the scoreboard. Fairmont struck first scoring on a 37 yard Tom West field goal. The Firebirds followed up with a 1 yard TD run by West to take an early 10-0 lead. Wayne quickly responded with a 32 yard TD pass from Harrison to Bray to make it 10-7. Fairmont drove down the field late in the first half then lost a fumble on a completed pass from West to Gannon at Wayne's 5 yard line. Tyree Kinnel recovered the fumble and returned it to the 40. Trice came out under center for Harrison, in a move that appeared to be for performance not injury issues. Wayne wasted no time capitalizing on Fairmont's mistake as they scored on a 17 yard TD pass from Trice to Latimer with 00:06 left in the half. Wayne's extra point play was unsuccessful. So rather than go into the half with a comfortable lead and momentum on their side, Fairmont went to the half down 13-10 and with the momentum on Wayne's side.
Fairmont came out strong the second half scoring first on a 27 yard West field goal to tie the game 13-13. With the score still tied, West hit Sutton for a big play, but West took a big hit knocking him out of the game. Sophomore QB Jaryd Murphy replaced him. Murphy managed to continue moving the Firebird offense but threw an interception at the 5 yd line to Paul Wise. Harrison came back under center for Wayne the next series and drove the field for a 34 yard Belcher field goal to take the lead 16-13 with 2:01 left in the game. There was a very controversial play on this drive. Aaron Abbott intercepted a Harrison pass only to have the play taken away by a personal foul against Fairmont. It was unclear what exactly resulted in the personal foul as Fairmont Head Coach Andy Aracri became irate on the sideline as he argued the call with the zebras. West came back under center for Fairmont only to get hit hard once again and have to leave the game. In a show of good sportsmanship, Wayne Head Coach Jay Minton came out to check on West, who carried Fairmont on his shoulders all evening rushing, throwing and kicking. He gave a very gutsy performance and took a lot of hard hits. With Murphy back in and forced to go for it on 4th down, Fairmont turned the ball over giving Wayne a short field. The Warriors scored on a 5 yd McFadden TD run to make the score 23-13 Wayne. Wayne improves to 3-1, 7-2 and Fairmont falls to 1-3, 2-7.
