Fight at McDonald's on North Bend...

I have never really heard exactly what happened in 1979 and how it went down when students at Elder and La Salle had a brawl at McDonalds on North Bend Road.

Can someone tell us people in our 40's what happened??

Lasalle kids jumped an Elder kid, and beat him up outside Rapid Run Larosas, which that strip shopping center used to be a hang out in the late 1970's/early 80's. I believe was the final straw.....I think there were other incidents like it. I know Lasalle guys came over and painted the entrance at the gates and on the sidewalk pink...with various references. So, the "Trojan Horse" U-haul pulled into North Bend McDonald's after a basketball game at LaSalle. Elder teachers saw it and were on site, a couple of which got hit by LaSalle students. Needless to say, that following Monday was a tough day. I was in geometry as a sophomore in a class with mostly juniors and seniors. After Otten got done reading the names off to report to the gym, it was only the six sophomores left. Otten was the dean of discipline at that time. Some of the teachers got wind of what might happen which is how they knew to be there.

There was supposed to be a similar type of brawl my junior year b/w kids from my grade and OH, circumstances were similar to what you described. Otten and Ruffing put the clamps on that, must have learned from the incident described.

I heard it was an uncle of one of the OH students with a gun and that they were out of the car and on or just off of Elder's campus.

Why were they even at Elder to begin with? There was a similar incident when I went there, where an expelled student, turned OH student, showed up swinging around a wrench. Things are just getting out of hand with some of the OH students, and from what I here the school as a whole.

Something to do with a girl who dated an OH student and she dumped him for an Elder student, or something like that. I dunno.

I will never forget the Monday morning after the Lasalle fight. We used to have first period and then homeroom. Otten came on the PA around 8:05 and his words were "I would like these people to report to my office and bring your coats.".It was a pretty lengthy list and those guys ended up missing a day or two of school.

There was also the story somebody from LaSalle threw a beer bottle and hit a car driven by one of the guys from the football team, his mom's new car. As Older Panther stated, that next Monday was a bizzarre day. The lengthy list included about 40+ seniors. Not only were they suspended from school for a few days, they also were not allowed to attend ANY sporting events for the rest of the year.

The LaSalle's painting of the entrance and side walk in '79 may be true, I don't recall that at this time, but the U-Haul incident was actually during the senior's of '78. I know one of the guys who was driving it.

I'm from the '79 class, and I never heard that before. I also was not there, so perhaps it did happen in '79 as well, but I know it happened a year before during the '78's senior year. I was at the basketball game at LaSalle that year and the LaSalle students were not very happy when the game got over. LaSalle led the entire game, and had a 15 point lead during the 4th quarter, and Elder scored the last 18 points to win, it was amazing. Things got started early though. Back then each school's cheerleaders would go in front of the opposing team's cheering section and do a cheer, to promote good sportsmanship. The LaSalle cheerleaders come over to our section and did a cheer that tricked us into doing a LaSalle cheer. Our cheerleaders went back over to their cheering section and yelled, "Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all you d---os stand up and hollar." Wasn't much love lost after that.

you're probably right about that....I remember it as F&B remembers it.....the class of 79.....I was also a sophomore...graduating in 1981....and being in geometry class as a sophomore when the announcement occurred.....Regardless of when....it did happen, so we can agree on that and the day of the announcement of the names was weird and legendary with as many names that were called.

I'm not saying the fight didn't occur in '79, because it definitely did. I'm just saying the U-Haul was from the '78 class. Things were getting out of hand, especially after those two years of fights. Ironically Elder played LaSalle just a short time later in the District Final at the Gardens, and lost 55-50 or something like that. I think the cheering section was still feeling the effects of not having a big chunk of seniors not there. After the McDonald's situation in '79, school officials and students from both schools began to meet and they calmed the situation down. Things really cooled down after that between the schools. I don't believe it's as big a deal these days, but one of the beliefs back then was that feelings may have risen because a lot of the LaSalle students had dads that were Elder grads, so when the two schools played there was some underlying tension. Not sure how much that played into it overall, but I can see it being somewhat of a small factor.

I agree. I remember that they started playing the basketball games at Cinti Tech back then (now Cinti State) for a while to cool things down. They also had a Lasalle/Elder exchange student program which they did for a couple years which started I believe my senior year to help the situation. You're right it isn't the big deal anymore, particularly all of the kids really know each now days from club sports, etc so the animousity is very low to non-existent.

Chris was who I was referring to in post #13. He was a beast, after Elder went to North Carolina and played LB, team mate of someguy named LT.

The LaSalle guy breaking the window was the reason for the fight, like I said before, the U-Haul was the year before.

Bad azz. What are the odds and incident like this today would cause some kind of local media storm? Did this even make the news at all?

today probably yes, back then..............not at all. I don't recall any story on the news about this. I do remember a huge party near the bottom of Bender Road that was thrown by a '79 grad and attended by many, including a big chunk of the '79 class that was covered by one of the local news stations. That was a few years after graduating though, not during high school years. Watch the movie Dazed and Confused and you'll get a real good feel about how it was back then.

The guy who threw the party had a brother who graduated with me in 1981.....The party was shortly after we graduated and had gotten back from Florida....The brother invited the West Hill, Oak Hills, Seton, Mercy, and obviously Elder graduates from 1981.....they had, I recall, two bands that played......it was a blast...until broken up by the police.
