I'm not all that convinced Massillon would actually want to go to D2, mostly because of the fan base pride factor. That's one reason I believe they should have the right to stay up if they want. If their good with it, then fine. But Ohio's winningest program shouldn't be forced to do so. Their problem isn't competing with large publics. It's the large parochial who recruit from the major metropolitan areas that tend to make things really tough for them to go on to win state. If a public - private split happens, I'm sure they would compete with the Mentors of the world, despite being half the size.
As far as McKinley goes, we have a different situation altogether. We already have a de facto merger as open enrollment within CCS means most of the best football kids opt for McKinley. In reality, McKinley is actually far bigger than it's 600+, and imho it would be unfair to the D2 schools to have a D1 monster in their playoffs.
It wasn't long ago(2005&2006) that McKinley was ranked #2 in the State.
Oh,and 2004 played in the State Championship game, and then played in the State Semi-finals.
That doesn't sound like 50-60 years ago in the 1950's to me?
and i know this. but that has nothing to do with enrollment or conditions in the city now that cause declining enrollment. mck is not the large school they were in comparison to others back in the day. yeah - massillon could drop to DII - and mck could stay in DI under the new format - but in that new format mck would be one of the smaller DI schools. you are still talking about competing with schools with enrollments containg 400 to 500 more boys.
the past records won't help mck in deciding this - only enrollment.
where a team is ranked in the AP poll and whether they make it to a title game doesn't change the fact that the city has been on the decline for 40 years.
"A college football coach who recruits Stark County said Massillon and McKinley have the two most talented teams in 2012 and believes the Tigers will get a great deal of production from their junior class."

Here is the link where a local college coach who does recruiting in Stark County says Massillon and McKinley have the best talent for the 2012 season.
I bet bigdogman has to cry when reading this.
LOL, I'm guessing that you didn't read between the lines with my post. So, let me explain...
It's been suggested that the talent level is down this year, and because of that, some have suggested that coach Filtz gets a pass his first year. Well, the Repository Sunday Special quote suggests otherwise.
I have a feeling that Canton McKinley will either play a Washington DC team or have week three open. Ten to One, Canton McKinley will only play a nine game schedule for the 2012 season because everyone is SCARE to play Canton McKInley

Well, the Sunday Special also proclaimed Craig Coleman as McK head coach, so consider the source.. And the talent level might still be down, because the talent we have is largely young and inexperienced; and, because it's impossible to know what to expect, other than much- improved coaching, we'll have to wait and see how this all shakes out. However, I do like the idea that we could be more talented than I expected....this year is def going to be a fun one!
You're right ohiopup. It appears it's a ways away from an inked deal.
From the article........"That Rose game, which is the first of two meetings with the Rampants, could be replaced with a game at Ohio powerhouse Canton McKinley, which plays its home games next to the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
So much for the idea that we were gonna try to schedule some cupcake for week 3. New Bern looks like a pretty tough team.
On another website the writer of the newspaper article about McKinley being a potential opponent of New Bren,NC said that New Bren is a State Powerhouse in NC.
