Congrats on State Long jump championship. He may be a top three Middie athlete of all-time. Considering his accolades in 3 sports.
And 4th place in the high jump.

Does Todd Bell still hold the record for the long jump? I know he held that record for a long time, but you would think someone had the break it by now.

That's funny, I was thinking about that the other day when I heard the news that he won long jump in state. That would be an interesting list to compile; I might give him top 5 but it would be hard for me to put him over Jerry Lucas, Chris Carter (I know alot of people to this day who say he was just as good of a basketball player as he was a football player) and Todd Bell (All-American in track and football) in making the top 3

I would agree with your asessment on Chris Carter. He was an all state basketball players well that helped his team to the state semis. That football team was also one of middletowns best as well. Only loss was to the vikes who won it all and one could argue they were the second best team in the state. Just too bad they didnt allow more teams in the playoffs in that era. We all know how great of a football player todd bell was and i went back and found the long jump todd had when he broke jesse owens record at 25ft 5 inches i believe. That is almost 1 foot more than jalin had for the state title. That puts todds record in prespective. Jalin is definitely a top 5 maybe a top 3 of multiple sport athlete.

Todds record was broken in 1996 i believe by a Raymond or Ramon Johnson @ 25ft 9 in. Dont forget that Butch carter was also a 1st team tight end as a footballer his jr year as well as Player of year in Basketball as a senior! Also Jerry Lucas held record in Shot put as a sr in high school for several years!

And Butch was also the Ohio coach of the year as he lead the Middies to the final four. I cannot remember the year right now. He was the first (only?) player of the year and coach of the year.

Tom, i believe Butch won the coach of the year in the 87-88 season, but none of his coached teams made the final four. Only middie team that made it to the final four in the 80s was the 83-84 team with chris carter. You are right about butch being the only one to be the player of the year( i believe 75-76) and the coach of the year.

I dont think Cris made all - state. We talked about this on here before. On the middie basketball website it says he was honorable mention which shocked me.I though Cris was first team or something. Great player with a killer instinct.

Jalin reminds me more of Todd Bell than Cris.

Yeh, i also believe greg akers made honorable mention too that year. I would agree with your assessment about jalin resembling todd bell. Its crazy that people tend to forget about george carter, who has dropped some on the all time scoring list but i believe he was in the 800s. I am going to have to make sure i get tickets for the wisconsin game with the bucks so i can watch jalin play for the bucks. Its only a bit over an hour drive. Just have to make sure i dont wear my bucks stuff there in madison lol

Andrew Burton got some snaps last year, so if he ends up being Jalin's backup this year i would think he could be playing in the defensive backfield since the middies have to replace almost the whole defense. Whoever is the backup, i hope he is able to get alot of snaps this year to get ready for the following year.

Its really cool to see a sea of kids out there at workouts when you drive down Breiel blvd in the mornings. looks like dedication to me. I swear chance sorrell stands out all the way from breiel blvd. you can see him hahaha!

Burton is nice athletic kid. Iwouldnt mind seeing him take some snaps to get ready for the future. anxious to see what EJ Colson brings to the table this year as well. Comes from a great athletic family of football stars. Hear that the Glover kid is just a monster already too and the off line is not tall, but bulldog strong. Gardner and Kirk are looking very good in line drills. the trenches is what kept us from going to State last year. Hope it has gotten better.

on the freshman front, my grandson said the two new lineman transfers are gonna make a huge difference in this offense. guess we will see when they pads go on, but it was obvious the lack of strong lineman was the problem last year at vail. anytime you can get two big linemen in one class thats huge, espeically here at middletown.

Middie do those two big kids play on the offensive or defensive or both? If they dont plan to use chance some as a catching tight end it would be nice to see him on the defensive end to get more pressure. What position does ej colson play and where do you think he will play this year?

Not sure, I know in camp the new frosh were at guard and tackle. But camp is just that, camp. Ones name is Kameron and he's a nice size kid maybe 6 foot and 225, transfer from Edgewood I think and the other is Mutterspaw who played here in the buckeye program for years with my boys son.He looks maybe 6-2 215. His dad was excited to bring him back. I almost didn't recognize him he has probably added 25 pounds in a year. Looks to heavy for basketball but that's great for football! Chance would be a great DE at times. That would be cool to see him get the reps. That boy has a bright future. I hear EJ will get running back looks. Again, I'm not getting this from Coaches but other parents. This group of kids has a lot of speed and stubbornness on the field. I'm predicting a fun year!

Burton has the speed to play in the def backfield, but can he hit? Does anyone know who is the future QB other than Burton? Sophs?

Dont know if he can hit, but running a triple option is not for one who doesnt have the fortitude to take a hit or give a hit for that matter. Remember Skyler Watkins (Caleb's brother) Got alot of snaps on the defensive line and was listed as a DE and will probably be a starter or see alot of snaps smoewhere on the defense. Jettie Bailey will also be starting on defense as a LB even though i thought he had some snaps on the D Line last year. Middies had a ton of very good LB so Jettie didnt see alof of playing time but this is his year to shine. There are also some other players that will eJither fill in on the couple holes on the offensive line or move over to the defense. That doesnt even account for the soph that could play. Look what Brad Carr did last year. I dont think the cuppard isnt bare, but not sure they will have enough time together to jell to help out against X. That game should be a great bench mark if the new defense can make enough stops to allow the offense to do what they do best. I believe you or Deep posted some info on some under classman that will probably take over at QB when Jalin is gone who have alot of talent.

I really like Bailey at LB and with him and Carr they should be able to help stop the run. Both can cover also. Should be a nice tandem duo. Im not sure who the sophs are that can help defensively. Hopefully they will be ready for ST X but I wouldnt worry too much. Win or lose they have a lot of other tough battles. On offense I heard Deaton the soph QB isnt playing football at all so that opens the door for a QB behind Burton.

they are both freshman Middie85. Young and need lots of work. Mutterspaw is kinda gawky (is that a word? ) but he will be a good one when his body fills out. very long arms and legs and big lineman hands, but solid - perfect for a offensive tackle or defensive end. Reminds me of Max Current. The other kid that came looks strong. Big kid, big body and can move. Playing maybe guard? Good pickups either way. But the one Im anxious to see is this new kid Preston that transferred in from Monroe. Everyone of the kids are saying he has a chance to play varsity as a freshman! Wow! Said he is a receiver and Def Back and can fly. didnt even know he was here until the kids were talking about him. Dont know his first name though. Thats three nice transfers in one class! how rare is that? About time kids came here. Middie football is the place to be.

I think the freshman may struggle with the new offense though. It takes time ot learn the variations of triple option. I can see them strugglin the first few weeks of the season against fairfield, winton woods. I think they have St X in there too early on. Itll take time but as long as they develop for varsity thats what matters.

It all starts wtih the upperclassmen though. They can make these young ones better through example by hard work and mentoring these young players on and off the field.

Thanks Great stuff middie 3. It sure would be nice if they could get the triple option implemented in the middle school. Any word if there are plans to do that any time soon? I think that would help alot so when they become freshman they know the system and can continue too improve

Who is Shawn Harris? Enquirer had quote from Everhart that he was offered by Western Carolina. Listed him as DB 5-9 175. I have never heard of him.
