So true but as history shows, one game without burch against a quality team results in a loss.
One game without Burch (foot), Kerlakian (103 degree fever), Tabling (ACL), Zerbe (Mono), and two other players playing at 50% (Pierce and Lancaster) that recently returned from injuries.
This was a banged up SUA team that battled last night, controlling most of the game with a limited roster. They subbed one time with 7 minutes left in the game. It is an insult to the team to suggest that they cannot win without one player. They were missing several starters, and a couple that did play are still nursing injuries.
Good luck to Centerville as they advance to the Regional Finals. And SUA, thank you for an incredible run. Ladies, you played with class and dignity and you should hold your heads high today. It was another great season and you all should be proud of your efforts.

Hammer 91 - Better just take your medicine and crawl back in the cave till next fall. SUA will still be one of the best cincy teams, but just as this year, EB was the difference maker. W/O EB - I think your record is 0-2.

Anderson is an underperformer in the tournament. I stand by that comment. And SUA has had key injuries before (Cardell in 07 and Berry in 08) and advanced. My problem with you and Flutter's post is the notion that SUA could not win without EB. EB doesn't need that weight on her shoulder's, and it diminishes the other players on the team. Last night wasn't an EB issue. The injuries and illnesses finally caught up to SUA. SUA didn't underperform, they overperformed this season given the roster situation. Not an excuse, just a fact.

They did play with class. Congrats, but to say they controlled the game I will have to disagree (as usual. Aint that right skinster) SUA had no answer for #14 when she touched the ball. SUA bounced right off of her. SUA defense, great ball skills but Centerville just knocked them right off the ball when ever they wanted.
Yes Sua was depleted but when you have the best 20 players in the city and beyond, injuries are no excuse. After all it is young ladies soccer and injuries and illnesses happen all the time.

Centerville got off one good shot. If anything, I would say that Centerville's defense kept them in the game.

I have no ties. Just an opinion from someone sitting on the fence. Shots on goal are not always the tell of tape. SUA did take 14 shots ( if you say so) but none of them were challenging for the goalie.
SUA dominated the first half, probably 70-30 control and possession. They had a half-dozen outstanding opportunities, including at least two that should have been put in the back of the net (one was mis-hit with the wrong foot, causing their coach to fall off of the bench ... the other was hit at the keeper).
In that sense, EB would certainly have been a difference-maker, not because SUA is a one-player team, but because SUA simply could not finish last night, and that is her strong suit.
I agree with the comment that the Centerville team was more "physical" than SUA ... They came in hard on their tackles, knocked SUA off of the ball in the attacking third, and retained possession by keeping their feet. At the same time, I thought it was an exceptionally "clean" game ... no shirt pulling, late tackles, or "chippy" play, just a couple of "no calls" going both ways (although a lot of belly aching on both sides, unjustified in my opinion).
SUA came out flat in the second half ... The Centerville exploited a defense lapse with a terrific ball played into space for their striker, who found herself 1v1 against SUA's sweeper and had a VERY high quality finish (far post, on the ground, side-netting).
At that point, SUA seemed to get a bit rattled and out-of-sorts, like the combination of missing EB and being down 1-0 weighed against them in a "here we go again" way. To their credit, Centerville's defense just shut down SUA's strikers ... very much "bend not break." I saw a lot of very good balls played in from the midfielders, but again, no finish. Centerville's keeper was not really challenged in the second half, maybe a couple "above-average" saves. SUA's best scoring opportunities in the second half came on corners, most of which were perfectly set but poorly headed.
At about the 14-15 minute mark, Centerville switched to a 5-4-1 and packed it in. I was a little surprised to see SUA make no adjustment or subs, even if to just to get some fresh legs in the game or maybe go with a 3-4-3 ... SUA's back three defenders were easily containing the single Centerville striker, who was content to drive balls into the corners or play them out of bounds and burn time. Not sure it would have made a difference. SUA made a single substitution (left outside half) at the 7 minute mark, which had little impact. I did think SUA lacked the "explosiveness" that I have seen in other games.
In the final analysis, Centerville is a very good team, that played hard, smart, and disciplined soccer last night, and they earned this win by having the one thing that SUA lacked on this particular night ... a high quality finish.

Sounds like some great games last night. Would have liked to see 3 GGCL teams advance. Fenwick will have it's work cut out for them facing the States best team in division two.
