Evidently Sweeney is hurt now and may be out for quite a few weeks. Ankle I think. That may keep him in JV until mid-season as he recovers. I don't think he is in a boot so let's hope for his sake that it is just a light sprain.

There is a new guy that is 6 foot plus that moved in as a Junior. Not sure of his name. I have heard that he has a decent shot but may be a bit weak on defense (Richards will fix that as we know). He plays a guard and since the varsity is already guard heavy look for him to spend most of the year on JV to learn the system or until an injury forces a change.

Here is what I heard from talking to some of the boys during the Sycamore game:

- guard heavy team with some solid 3s as well. Kind of light and small for 4 & 5.
- Seniors are looking solid - Brune, Stouffer, O'Shaughnesy, and Barnes. Barnes evidently just had tonsils out so he may be slow for the first part of November but should be fine by season opener. Brune is driving better, Stouffer is playing great defense as always and hitting the outside jumper, O'Shaughnesy is finally running the floor well and getting rebounds - still not sure about him as an offensive threat. Barnes is looking good but appears to be 3rd behind Brune and Stouffer (and probably 4th behind Sprague).
- Sweeney is hurt but should be okay by season opener - may put him down to JV though until he is back 100%. He has grown (6'6) but may need some more muscle to play in the GMC.
- Sprague is hitting every shot and is a couple inches taller than last year and is getting stronger. He may not start with Brune and Stouffer in front of him but he should see a lot of minutes especially where Richards wants more ball handlers on the floor - may have Brune, Stouffer and Sprague (and Barnes). May lead team in vertical jump (I don't think that included King and Carden) and supposedly can stuff the ball with one hand.
- Myles looks great one night and then so-so the next. He should be ready for season opener. Doesn't appear that he grew too much since last year but he seems a bit stronger. Still needs help jumping.
- Harris looks good on offense but is a non-factor most of the time on defense. He is way out of shape and weak. He is lagging everyone on the sprints (almost to the point of not finishing) and evidently Richards is upset about it. Couple kids that I talked to don't know what Richards sees in him.
- Carlin grew a lot. Not sure if there is a spot for him on Varsity this year but he may fill an injury spot later in the season. They kind of screwed with him last year by bringing on to JV and then back to Freshman. Hopefully he stays in a comfortable spot this year.
- no sign of Pippins and Winkler from last year's JV team. Pippins supposedly had problems with Barnes and King so that may have something to do with it. Looks like Winkler is going to focus on soccer. Not unusual for Richards and Bly - they always seems to drive off at least one senior each year.
- Obviously King and Carden haven't been there due to football. Evidently rumors of them not playing are not true even though their first love is football. May have been different if Comets would had done better in football this year.
- Lots of sophomores look like they are trying out and lots of freshman. Evidently kids that didn't play for the last couple years are in the open gyms. Freshman, JV white and green could be interesting and may add new talent to the mix in the coming years. May be fun to watch.

brune, stouffer, carden, king, ballard should be starters with help from sprague harris and barnes. middies and pton arent the same as last year and with richards coaching i see no reason why this team cant finish in top half of gmc

it will be tough though, they have a lot of question marks. if they can get confidence in themselves they should do fine. Anytime you lose so many talented seniors it is hard but coach richards will work wonders once again.

Thanks for the run down YouthSportsFan.

I am disapointed Pippins is not playing. I do not know how much he would have contributed but he is a big body who can rebound. I do not think Winkler would have been much of a factor really. Hopefully the coaches can light a fire under Harris. He has too much talent to let it go to waste. It is good to hear Brune, Sprague, and Barnes have made some strides. Any word on Brune's jumper, any improvement there?

This is when Coach Richards excels...when the cupboard is bare with Seniors and just when you want to count the Comets out is when Richards gets alot out of not that much.

Dont be too sure to call the coroner yet.

If Sprague is or Harris is playing varsity basketball the cupboard must really be bare. I have know idea how sprague could do anything to help make that team better this yr.

yes the team is bare because they lost so many seniors. No need to bash Sprague either he is a solid player. he is only a soph so he will need to feel his way out in the varsity game. He could struggle to start but he is a good shooter and good enough athlete so he will see the floor. And Harris is young as well. He is long and a good scorer. Richards will teach defense. He will come along to be a nice player too for the comets.

Starting this Friday, the paring down begins, did either of them seem any time on varsity last year? Or were they starters on JV last year. In the playoffs I thought I saw Harris getting some minutes?

I think they will both be fine at Mason.

I do not know about it being bare, but it is certainly inexperienced. Harris dressed Varsity and started JV, while Sprague also started JV. They are both very talented players who could very easily contribute at many schools throughout the GMC. Sprague can be a solid back up ball handler for Brune and hit some 3s. He also is a good defender. Hopefully they both surprise some people this year getting some time as they build for the next couple years.

That sounds great for Finneytown newbie, but I don't think it works in the Mason Comets thread. I don't think anyone here was clammoring for a Finneytown run down.

I moved that Finneytown post into it's own thread, GC.

What can i say? He made a rookie posting mistake.

I saw Carden walking to the arena for tryouts on friday on my way out of school. and King was at tryouts but didn't participate, apparently he thinks he's guaranteed a spot no matter what...
And Miles told me today that Richards will most likely not start a 5 and if he does it will be D-Ray (Harris)

That is just some more solid 8-26 knowledge. He does not really know much about Mason athletics.

Why does Richards get a pass as a great coach. Has he ever won a District Tournament in all his years and they are one of the largest schools in the state and played in the Paper Valley Conference all those years and did not even dominate it. Just asking what this rep is based on. I know they dummy down their schedule since they got in the GMC explain please

Mason has never had great talent or height. The Comets are always just a bunch of average players and average athletes with the occasional good player. The only losing season Richards ever had was two years ago when that good player, Zach Brown, went down with injury. Many do not agree with the flex offense or low style scoring games but Mason does win. The Comets have a top defense year in and year out. Richards gets the most out of every player on his team. He is easily a great coach.
