Article: Fairmont Beats Springfield 38-13 in GWOC Central Cellar Dweller Battle

The Fairmont Firebirds, as well as the rain, put a damper on the Springfield Wildcatsí homecoming this Friday night as they won the battle to stay out of the GWOC Central cellar in convincing fashion, 38-13. Chris Rhoades set the tone on the first play from scrimmage with a tackle for a 6 yard loss. Rhoades then recovered a Springfield fumble just a few short plays later and continued to terrorize the Catsí backfield all night. The Firebirds took advantage of the short field finding the end zone on a 1 yard TD run by West. Fairmontís next drive stalled and resulted in a missed field goal attempt by West. Springfield lost a fumble again on their next drive. The Firebirds once again took advantage of the short field scoring on a West 24 yard TD pass to senior receiver Aaron Abbott, making the score 14-0 after the PAT. The Wildcatís held onto the ball the next drive scoring on a 30 yard Chris Wallace pass to Jeffrey Wellington closing the gap to 14-7. Fairmont continued to move the ball quickly with their quick strike spread offense on their next possession but lost the ball when West threw an interception to Marques Moore. Springfield moved the ball into Fairmont territory in a bid to tie the game before the half. However, Wallace threw a 60 yard pick 6 to Tom West as time expired to make the half time score 21-7.

The first drive of the 2nd half did not start well for the Firebirds as they lost a fumble to Springfieldís Trent Gilbert on a controversial play. Springfield failed to take advantage of the short field as Aaron Abbott intercepted a Chris Wallace 4th and 9 pass attempt. Neither team managed to score the 3rd quarter. And with a 2 TD lead Fairmont went into clock control mode as they began running their big junior RB Chris Rhoades. Tow West kicked an 18 yard field goal with 07:59 in the game to make the score 24-7. The Cats fumbled again on their next drive as Gai Buk Shul recovered it for the Birds. Fairmont quickly converted the turnover to a TD on a 1 yard TD run by Rhoades to ice the game at 31-7 with 05:24 to go. Not to be out done, Fairmont's backup QB, sophomore Jaryd Murphy, scored on a 40 yard TD run with 01:58 left in the game increasing the Firebirdsí lead to 38-7. Against Faimontís backup defense, Springfield scored a late TD on a 26 yard TD run by Corey Timmons, his first on the season.

Tom West looked like a man playing with boys going 15/24 for 125 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. He also rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries, 1 TD. And he mixed in some defensive scoring with a pick 6, field goal and some PATs for good measure. Tom Billing Sports broadcaster Casey Matteson compared West to Tim Tebow with his body size and ability to run with power. Casey also mentioned West is reportedly being recruited by the Big Tenís Wisconsin. The Ivy Leagueís Harvard is also rumored to be in the mix. Aaron Abbott was the leading Firebird receiver with 7 receptions for 64 yds and a TD. Chris Rhoades lead the defense with 10 tackles, 5 solo and a half sack.

For Springfield, QB Chris Wallace was 7/14 for 100 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT. Jeffrey Wellington lead the team in rushing with 6 carries for 32 yards and receiving with 4 receptions for 74 yards and a TD. Dorian Hunter was Springfieldís top defender with 9 tackles, 6 solo.

Fairmont improves to 2-5 overall, 1-1 conference. Springfield falls to 1-6 overall, 0-2 conference.
