Article: Newark Catholic blanks Bexley, 20-0

Newark Catholic entered their contest with Bexley on a four game win streak and knowing a win tonight would keep their hopes of hosting a playoff game alive. For the hosting Lions they came in hoping to right the ship and salvage what was becoming another disappointing season.

The Lions took the opening kick off and moved down field using eleven plays to get into field goal range for Will Gingery, who has easily connected on kicks through out his career, but this time his kick would be short and wide in large part do to pressure by Brian Schumaker.

After Newark Catholic took over at their own twenty-yard-line quarterback Chayce Crouch would get his team moving and with 5:33 left in the quarter the young quarterback took off on a twenty-five-yard run. Crouch would connect with Hunter Nance fr a big gain made easy by how opened Nance was. A short time later Spencer Magers would gain twelve-yards on a nice run, with the aid of a nice hole opened up by his offensive line. The twelve play eighty yard drive would end when Kevin Bourne muscled his way in the end zone from a yard out. Sam Bell would miss his point after kick leaving the score, 6-0 with1:02 left in the quarter.

Crouch would connect with Ryan Fitzgerald for a first down when the Green Wave was facing a third and nine, with 10"06 left in the half. The drive would end soon after as the Lions defense continued to keep the Lions in the game.

The Lions would get a fifty-yard run with 7:23 left in the half by Patrick McClendon. Then with 5:33 showing on the clock the Lions was facing a fourth and one McClendon would pick up the first down and keep the momentum on the Lions side. Andre Stewart would get his number called for the Lions with 4:17 showing on the first half clock, where he would be hit at the Newark Catholic eleven causing the ball to come lose and when the pile was cleared the Green Wave had the ball.

Kevin Bourne would pick up twenty yards on a nice run where he used some nice work by his line to get the Green Wave gone. Crouch would connect with Bourne for a big gain and a first down with 2:53 left. The half would end with the score still, 6-0.

Newark Catholic would cap off a seven play, ninety yard drive when Crouch hit Bourne for a fifty-six-yard touch down. Bourne would make the catch use his speed and then avoid a would be tackler as he sprinted into the end zone. Bell hit the point after to put Newark Catholic up, 13-0, with 8:57 left in the third quarter.

Newark Catholic would get a sixteen-yard run by Magers, with 2:50 left in the quarter, but the drive would end soon after as the Lions defense again put the clamps down.

9:17 was left in the game when Brent Benner got to McClendon for a three-yard loss. Benner had a very good game on defense for Newark Catholic. The 6-4-280 junior was in on several tackles and put pressure on the Lions quarterback and ball carriers all game long.

Crouch, who had a very solid game on offense but as the punter for Newark Catholic he continued to struggle and with 6:36 left on the game clock his punt would be blocked by Jeff Nicosia. Nicosia easily blocked the kick in large part because Crouch seems to take a very long time getting the kick off.

The Newark Catholic defense would get another sack with 5:40 left in the game when Cameron DeBevoise got to the Lions quarterback. DeBevoise, a 6-1-176 pound junior had what I think was his best game ever. The young man had his name called several times during the night and each time he did the guy calling the game for the Lions called him a different name each time.

One play after the DeBevoise sack Patrick Oehlman would post a sack on the Lions quarterback forcing the Lions into a third and long. Two plays later with 4:06 left in the game and the Lions facing a fourth and seventeen McClendon threw a screen pass to Luke Groom, who raced down the side line for a first down.

Erik Lensink, who has emerged as the Green Wave best linebacker hit Stewart before he could get started holding the back to a short gain.

With 2:51 left in the game and the Lions driving McClendon had his passed tipped at the line of scrimmage which led to Mike Lohr picking it off and making a long return before he was brought down from behind.

Kevin Bourne would cap off his big game with a twenty-six-yard touchdown run icing the game for Newark Catholic. Bell would end the scoring with his point after kick giving the winners a 20-0 lead.

The Newark Catholic defense would get one final sack, with 1:51 left in the game when DeBevoise got to McClendon.
