Article: Fairmont Loses Heart Breaker to Northmont 26-24
A season of could'ves, should'ves, would'ves continued for the Fairmont Firebirds tonight as they lost a nail biter to the Northmont Thunderbolts 26-24. The story of the first half was one of offensive ineptness ending with a 3-3 half-time score. Northmont struck first with a 17 yd Cody Rice field goal late in the 1st quarter. Fairmont countered with a 20 yard Tom West field goal late in the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd half started as they often do for Fairmont - very poorly. While the Firebird defense was able to pressure Thunderbolt QB Cam Belton and make some big plays, Belton managed to find holes in the Fairmont defense hooking up with WR Dominque Stallings for 2 big TD plays in the 3rd quarter of 26 and 32 yds respectively jumping to a 17-3 lead. However, Fairmont quickly responded to the 2nd TD with a big play of their own as QB Tom West hooked up with Junior WR Aron Sutton for a 30 yd TD, cutting their deficit to 7.
Northmont responded in the 4th with a 31 yd TD pass from Belton to Isaiah Williams. In a gamble that nearly cost Northmont the game, they went for a 2 pt conversion and failed leaving the score 23-10 with 11:45 to go in the game. Bolstered by this play, several other big defensive plays and some creative play calling, Fairmont scored the next 2 TDs to take the lead 24-23 with 3:47 to go in the game. The scores came on a 5 yd pass from West to Aaron Abbott and a 1 yd TD run by West. However, Northmont retook the lead 26-24 on a 22 yd Cody Rice field goal with 1:25 to go in the game. Fairmont's last drive ended when a long pass attempt by West was under thrown and intercepted.
The play of Fairmont Junior WR Aron Sutton really stood out in this game as he was the Firebirds' leading receiver with 5 receptions for 130 yds and 1 TD. The kid just seems to always be open and catch everything thrown near him. Aaron Abbott caught 4 passes for 35 yds, 1 TD and Deven Gannon chipped in with 3 receptions for 31 yards as well as 2 passes for 78 yds. West was Fairmont's leading rushed with 82 yds and 1 TD on 18 attempts. Damon Bahns had 36 yds on 9 carries. West was 10/27 passing for 118 yds with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Junior Chris Rhoades continues to play like a stud since moving to defense full time as he lead the Firebirds again with 14 tackles, 7 solo. Senior DB Robert Nsenga had a good game as well recording 2 INTs. One was a pick-6 called back because of a penalty. Wesley Qualls had 2 sacks, Jean Nsanzima 1.5 sacks, Sean Reliford 1 sack and Gai Buk Shul .5 sack.
For Northmont, QB Cam Belton completed 17/30 passes for 266 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT. Isaiah Brown lead the team in rushing with 124 yds on 20 carries. Dominique Stollings was their leading receiver recording 6 receptions for 112 yds and 2 TDs.
Fairmont falls to 2-6, 1-2. Northmont improves to 5-3, 2-1.
