Article: Archbishop Alter survives soggy win over C-J
Alter stymied C-J on a 2-pt conversion attempt late in the game to earn a 17-15 victory at rain-drenched Centerville High School. The game was dominated by great defense on both sides and costly mistakes by the Alter offense, losing several fumbles.
The scoring opened on a safety by C-J when the snap on Alter's first punt sailed about 3 feet over punter Alex Craft's head. Craft alertly knocked the ball out of the end zone to prevent a C-J touchdown. Alter's next possession resulted in a FG for a 3-2 lead, highlighted by a 45 yard completion from QB Malik Zaire to tight end Ben Suttman. After a punt, Zaire hit RB Mitchell Burnette on a wheel route down the left sideline for a 48 yd touchdown. Freshman QB Harrison then engineered a 70 yard drive including a brilliant 23 yard touchdown run to bring Chaminade to within one at 10-9. That score remained until halftime under a constant rainfall. In the 3rd quarter, defenses were able to control the game until Alter made it 17-9, set up by a great run by Zaire. C-J scored the last touchdown but could not convert the 2-pt conversion. Chaminade had one last chance to win it with a FG but a holding call and sack on QB Jake Harrison ended the threat and the game. Alter will next play a first-round playoff game Saturday night TBA at Roush Stadium in Kettering. |
