Article: Orsini leads 2nd Half charge to put Hoban past Padua

It's no secret that the North Coast League teams play some of the most brutal out-of-conferences schedules in the area. That was surely the case for the Knights of Archbishop Hoban, as they entered NCL play at 0-5 before falling to Lake Catholic, 27-20 last week to drop to 0-6.

Hoban finally got in the win column on Friday night, thanks in large part to Senior Quarterback Dominick Orsini, as the Knights took down the Padua Bruins, 30-14. to spoil Padua's Homecoming game.

Orsini, a two-year starter for the Knights, finished 20 of 30 in the air for 226 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 81 yards on 18 carries. With Hoban trailing, 14-7 at the start of the 2nd Half, Orsini marched the team downfield on a 17 play, 73 yard drive that ended in a one yard throw to Jimmy Martter for the touchdown and the tie. Two drives later in the 3rd Quarter, Orsini bombed one downfield to Jake Tersigni for a 60 yard touchdown pass, putting the Knights ahead 21-14 after three quarters.

"[Hoban] had a nice drive to start the second half and definitely got some momentum," said Padua Head Coach Tony Shuman. "It came down to when we had our opportunities, there was just one too many three-and-outs. That can swing the tides of the game. On a field like we had tonight, the big plays won out. I think [Hoban] won the big play battle tonight."

The Bruins had their chances, but some untimely penalties did not help their cause. The Padua defense made a big red-zone stop midway through the 4th Quarter, but it was practically negated when Hoban's Domenic Grosso sacked Padua Sophomore Quarterback Brett James in the endzone to increase the lead to 23-14. Padua's Brandon Sforzo intercepted an Orsini pass soon after, but four plays later it was Hoban ball again.

Tersigni put the icing on the cake with a ten yard touchdown scamper with 1:28 remaining, finalizing the 30-14 victory. He finished with four catches for 69 yards, while Zach Leone caught six Orsini passes amassing 90 yards.

Hoban jumped on the scoreboard first when Orsini tossed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Leon midway through the 1st Quarter. Padua answered with two scores of their own in the 2nd Quarter, as Senior Will Hughes ran for a total of 61 yards on a drive that culminated in a three yard touchdown run by him, and James completed a spectacular 21 yard touchdown pass to Junior Kyle Oktavec.

Hughes finished with 87 yards on 16 carries, and Oktavec totalled 86 yards on his six catches. James completed 11 of 27 passes for 128 yards and the touchdown. Defensively, Senior Devon Greer was in on nine tackles while fellow Senior Anthony Bobak contributed to eight.

On special teams, Matty McGee was perfect on all four extra point attempts for Hoban, while Sophomore Dan Madden nailed both PATs for Padua in his first career start.

Padua falls to 2-5 on the season, 0-2 in the highly competitive North Coast League. Next up is Lake Catholic, in a game that is annually a battle between the two schools.

"We have to come back and have a strong day of work tomorrow, as disappointed as we are," said Shuman. "We have to prepare for a strong Lake Catholic team, it's always a physical game with them. We're going to come out and we'll be ready."

Kick off is 7pm next week at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium in Mentor.
