This is a follow-up to my thread from a couple years back; Barberton football 1971-81 which can be found here-
http://www.yappi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146211&highlight=barberton

This era covers the entire run of Coaches Foltz, Ault and Hadakivic and the last year of Rudy Sharkey and first two years of Ed Robinson. This era saw Barberton transform from a state power to a strong regional program. The first three seasons were brutal as Barberton still played a D-1 Independent schedule but no longer had the D-1 Independent numbers. 1982 and 1983 may have been the strongest schedules ever.

This is the same type of thread as the older one which will show results from that era as well as the senior rosters from each year and where they played in college. Please post any corrections or additions. Thanks!

In 1982 Barberton played the D-1 State and National Champions(Moeller), The D-1 State Runners-Up(Massillon) and the D-3 State Champions(St. V). Yikes!

Mike Fields, Dave Reed, Ken Adams, Jon Hunt, Jim Cuckler, Mike and John Babin, Brad Hone, Jason Hance, Melvin Nelloms were all very good. I am sure at least some of them played a sport in college.

1984 was better than their record. They were a competitive team against a brutal schedule.

The 1985 Walsh game was the most heartbreaking. The 1988 Walsh game and the 1991 Kent Roosevelt game were the two best.

1986 was the most disapointng. Pat Boone breaking his leg in the opening game left the offense without any weapons.

The 1985 Walsh game kept us out of the playoffs. The playoff loss to St. John in 1991 and the loss to eventual state champ St. Joseph in 1989 were also tough. But the worst loss to take for me was the 1995 Massillon game. I still get steamed when I think of that game.

The 1988 Walsh game was awesome. Pat Robertson had a huge night. The 1985 Mentor and 1986 St. Thomas games were exciting, last minute wins for us. If I could only pick one game though it would be then 1991 Kent Roosevelt game. Just awesome!

Here's what I can remember about this year.

1983(3-6)
Akron Garfield 12-48 (Charles Gladman)
Cuyahoga Falls 13-3
Akron East 35-12
Cincinnati Moeller 7-28
Lancaster 23-14
Massillon 7-38 (Chris Speilman)
Sandusky 0-28
Cleveland St. Joseph 6-24
St. Vincent-St. Mary 0-26 (Frank Stamms)

All three of those guys ended up in the pro's and I'm sure 1 or 2 guys from Moeller played in the pro's

You are correct.

Moeller and possibly St. Joseph could have had pro players. St. Joe was in between the Golics and the Desmond Howard/Elvis Grbac eras but they were still powerful.

Barry Larkin, who went on to fame as a shortstop for the Reds, played for Moeller but I think he was a senior in 1982. I believe he holds an interception return record for Moeller which he set against us in 1982.
