If I understand the rules correctly...

If the school travels further than an adjacent state to participate (i.e. Florida, NC), it must be after the beginning of the regular season, it must be count as a regular season game, and thus must be counted in the regular season record. This is why schools cannot go to these places every year, because sometimes Spring Break falls before the beginning of the season, in which case they are not allowed to travel further than an adjacent state for just a scrimmage, so it is not worth the time or money to do so.

If the school travels to an adjacent state for in-season competition (i.e. Pennsylvania, Kentucky), it may be treated as either a scrimmage or a real game if done so after the beginning of the regular season.
