Great game last year and this should be a another. Before the game Wilmington is honoring the late 70's teams coached by Jim Staley that won SCOL titles.
I think this will be a close game for most of the game, but I think Wilmington will pull it out in the end, winning by seven or more.
Centerville has not been playing well all year, despite their 11-2 record. Problem areas are foul shooting and the inability to make threes. Free throws have been a problem all year. Eventually, it's got to catch up with them. They have two three point shooters in Mike Griffin and Ryan Runyeon. Mike is nowhere near his percentage from last year, I'm sure. Ryan is inconsistent, making five last Friday against Springfield then zero the next night against Mason, despite numerous opportunities. Mason did play some tough defense at times, though.
Wilmington gave Centerville problems last year and I expect more of the same this year. The game was at Centerville last year. The players, coaches, and fans of Wilmington were not happy that things were not going their way. I think this game is one that Wilmington is pointing for and I expect an all out effort to defeat the Elks. Centerville will not get the calls this year, like they did last year.
Beyond that, I'm sure that Wilmington has a really good team; thus their #3 state ranking in the D2 poll. I just think Wilmington will have too much for the Elks to handle on Tuesday night.

We knew we were in trouble when one of the refs won the 50-50 drawing....
Centerville looked a little better tonight (Saturday, January 31) against a weak Lebanon team. Centerville led 27-3 after the first quarter, hitting 7 of 9 three point attempts in the quarter, including three by Mike Griffin. It was 43-12 a halftime. Starting late in the first quarter, Centerville substituted often, sometimes running in five new players at a time.

To me this game might be similar to the Cent-marshal game from the standpoint of quickness against size. Wilmington has also been fighting free throw blues hitting only 19-41 against Amelia Friday night.

It's hard to belive Lebanon is actually 8-5. It could have been worse, like you said.

on how awful the GWOC has become. I thought that it used to be one of the premier D-1 leagues in the state. Other than Centerville, Wayne and Trotwood, the league is truely pathetic. How schools with that many boys be that sad is beyond me. 27-3 in the first quarter? Are you kidding me...there are only 8 minutes in a quarter...ever heard of a time out? Ridiculous.

Ridiculous.Lebanon took a time-out when it was 11-0. But I sensed before the game that neither the Lebanon players or coaches thought they could win...not much determination. It's always sad when you see kids in the student section that look pretty athletic but aren't helping the team out on the court. Lebanon has had a big problem with that since Dave Merchant retired in 2002.
I don't know a whole lot about Beavercreek's history but I remember them being pretty good from the late 90's up until the last couple of years. Are they just down? I thought they were a really solid program.
Wilmington will give everything they've got but the Elks will probably be too much. Centerville has some serious depth and their #2s vs Lebanon's 1s would have been a better game.

41 foul shots in one game? Wow. Was that game at Wilmington? If so, I hope those refs don't work the C'ville game because the Elks can't afford to get into big time foul trouble. As it is, Kavanaugh and Replogle are both prone to foul problems from time to time, because they are so physical in the paint.

Beavercreek was on a roll for a few years, close to the top of the GWOC Central every year. The program has fallen way off in the last two years, and they have a new coach this year, so they are starting over.
Fairmont and Springboro are having decent seasons this year, but Springfield is down (and shouldn't be). So yeah, it's mostly Centerville, Wayne, and Trotwood and then a big drop off.

Game was at Amelia, one of those small tough places to play, in fact Wilmington lost there last year. Game had 3 technicals, and tons of whistles on both sides. Way more than was needed. Heard & Rollins both fouled out for Wilmington.

Centerville couldn't miss a shot to start off the game against lebanon and played some solid defense. Which then enabled them to let their bench have some time swapping five for five fairly often. If Centerville stays in this grove there is nooo way Wilmington can even touch them tomorrow night
If I remember correctly, Wilmington has a couple of quick guards that can play. These are the kind of teams that give Centerville fits. The Marshall game was an example of this, the difference being that that game was played at UD Arena on the larger college floor.
I think the Elks can win this game, I just think it's going to be really close deep into the game. Wilmington did not like the loss they took last year at Centerville and I'm sure they have revenge on their minds. As I've stated before, the fans, coaches, and players of Wilmington most certainly thought they should have won last year. I realize the fans and coaches don't play the game, but the players will be ready.
If Centerville hits their threes and foul shots, they'll be okay. If not, I think Wilmington will take this game.

tough loss for centerville. Couldn't have been more packed in the gym or more hot. Centerville played hard but didnt really come out with the intensity in their eyes. Don't mean to make excuses for Centerville but Centerville didn't get many calls down low. When they did they missed a lot of their free throws.

I'm sorry but fouls were almost dead even. Cane missed a bunch of FT's too. Well played game on both sides.

True but Centerville usually get the calls and just didnt get em tonight. Also Centerville shot 47 % from the line that has to be a season low and even though Wilm. missed a lot too i think they usually don't shoot that good from the line so don't count on them as much
Centerville losing because of poor foul shooting, sounds familiar.

I would say give our Hurricane some credit. Holding Kavanaugh to 7 points & 6rebounds is doing a pretty good job. He shot only 4 times the whole game. From a defensive standpoint Wilmington played it's game.

Sure sounds like it CF.
Your description of Kavanaugh's night tells me he didn't get the touches necessary to put the Elks in position to win the ballgame. Wilmington must have been ball-denying BIG TIME down low.
Kudos to the Hurricane for a BIG win!!

double teamed, every game, every play. How do you not get touches when your 6'10"s and your opponent is only 6'4"s is baffling to me...just on offensive rebounding alone, at 6'10" you should get 5 or 6 'put backs'...I don't get it...if your big man is double teamed...does'nt that bode well for your other players to get wide open looks or easy layups with open lanes? Someone who was there needs to help me on this...

Elks48 it really wasn't the ft's that did them in. Wilmington took the ball out of Crawford's hands early and kavanagh brought the ball up court several times against pressure and i think it wore on him. In the half court they always had a body on him they worked hard to front him and bring help from the guards. They boxed him out almost everytime. Replogle and white were absolutely non factors because Wilmington didn't give ground when they got the ball inside. White didn't play alot because there were a couple of plays where he was complaining about a call and didn;t run back on defense and Staley got pretty upset. After a shaky start Ashworth really scored the ball better than i have seen him all year (maybe had 14 or so) but they didn't get enough from others. Wilmington had a good game plan and the players executed it

Centerville lost this game not only because of missed free throws, but a number of other things factor in. They missed several bunny shots that they normally put in. The main factor of the loss was the effort put forth by both teams. Wilmington flat out wanted to win more than Centerville. Centerville expected to win and went in playing lazy. Kavanaugh's effort was terrible and he looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

IMO he was rarely in position to get a put back. The Hurricane defensive scheme denied him from being in the right place. Why do you want your 6'10 center bringing the ball up the court?

Big win for the Hurricane will help them in this weekend's tourney draw. I wouldnt think many D2 teams will want to square off with the boys from Wilmington. Great win for the program.

Yes i've attended many Centerville games this year and didnt see why Matt was bringing the ball up the court; this was one of the first times i've seen Coach Staley put Matt in that position and think it might have disrupted Centerville's offense

Funny, look here. Centerville fans also complain about the refs when they don't win. It's not just Wayne fans.

I knew that the Centerville fans wouldn't touch this.
I knew that the Centerville fans wouldn't touch this.
Wouldn't touch what?
The refs weren't very good last night, but they certainly didn't favor one team over the other, if that's what you're inferring. They made bad call BOTH ways.
Centerville won the game and the players decided the game; not the refs.
There are tons of Centerville fans who were at that game and saw it completely differently than the Wayne fans. By that I mean that many of them saw bad calls that favored Wayne and went against Centerville. They don't happen to post on this board. That doesn't mean they "wouldn't touch this."
Wayne fans need to give it up. The game is over. Wayne lost. Centerville is the GWOC Central champs.
Wilmington beat Centerville straight up. They were the better team. Again, it had nothing, I mean nothing, to do with the calls made by the refs. Wayne could beat Centerville too, but they didn't last night.
If this is not what you are referring to, please elucidate.

No, Centerville lost the game against Wilmington. Why bring Wayne up on this thread. Warrior78 was bringing up the Centerville fans are used to getting the calls, and in this game against Wilmington they didn't, and they lost the game.

I edited my post before I read this one. You're absolutely right, Wilmington beat Centerville straight up. No doubt about it. Something Wayne couldn't do this year.
And of course I bring Wayne up on this thread because Warrior78 is clearly a Wayne fan and indirectly referring to last night's game. C'mon, everybody reading this board knows that. Why would he wait until NOW to bring this up? The Wilmington game was Tuesday night.

Wayne will go further into the playoffs then Centerville will.

I agree with you. Wayne will make it to the regional, maybe further. Centerville will not get there. Wayne's game is much more suited to the big floor at UD Arena. Centerville has problems there.
