From the city of Akron, SVSM will be loeaded and Buchtel will be tough as long as all of their players get it done in the classroom. Hoban and Kenmore should both be good as well. East returns a lot from last year's team that peaked at the end of the season.

sports fan, do you know of a transfer from shaker hts by the name of miles fenton? I believe he is now at buchtel. If so he will really ad firepower to their perimeter game. If he keeps his shot selection under control he could be one of the top players in Akron.

Their JV team was pretty good last year and they looked decent this summer without both Slack and Barnes. You say they only have 1 returning player though, so which of these 2 will not be playing?
From what Ive read on here it doesnt seem like Akron is as deep with quality teams as they have been in years past.
This statement is made almost every year. I think that barberton, st v-m, buchtel, kenmore, east (they had some good young players last year), tallmadge and I am going to through out 2 teams that might surprise people. Walsh who was very young last year and Revere who played well this summer. They have some quality guards and if Will Weeks doesn't transfer to Garfield Heights then I think they would have contended for the Sub League.

The following is a partial roster that I received last season for SVSM. The grade levels have been adjusted for THIS year...
Returning starters...
25 Ricky Johnson/So.*
35 Daylen Harrison/Sr.*
Bench...
1 DaVonte Beard/So.
2 Aaron Carey/So.
3 Michael Hammonds/Sr.
4 Kameron Rubin/Jr.
14 Dominique Mitchell/Jr.
15 Donald Ricks/Sr.
20 Khristian Taylor/So.
21 Admir Bektic/Sr.
22 Oliver Hildebrandt/So.
33 Ben Bertsch/Sr.
45 Bruce Brophy/Jr.
My understanding is that they lost three seniors to graduation (Jamar Holley, Nick Thomas, and Demetrius Brinson). The two returning starters are Ricky Johnson and Daylen Harrison (marked with a *).
Two questions, and one request...
#1)Which bench players above saw decent playing time for the Irish last season?
#2) Have there been any transfers of significance?
The request...
Can somebody provide some heights for these kids????
Submitting a basketball roster without heights is like submitting a football roster without weights. :wallbang:

Nope. Yes they lost 2 key players, Daevon and Mitch, but they will have Slack & Barnes back. Add the addition of their stud freshman, Greg McMullen. Hoban is only hurting for a point to replace Boddie.
Hoban will fly under the radar this year. They will lose a few games in the regular season, but they will be primed in the post season. Unfortunatly, they will have to go thru, Buchtel & STVM. If they get thru those teams...next would be Benedictine.

that I am not on the Knight inside people but Slack could possibly not play to get ready for college football at Miami (OH). Especially if he wants to come in and play as a freshman.
I am going to say that the Rams are going to be better then what people think they are going to be. They have a couple of players that are going to surprise some people. They will be in the middle of the pack. Griffs and Cardinals will battle it it for the top spot. When those 2 teams meet it should be interesting. If East does not shoot themselves in the foot and find ways to loose games the could make the top 3. After that it is average at best. I hear that there is going to be a change of the guard at Firestone pretty soon. I have heard from a lot of people that Laria is going to retire soon. That will be interesting.

You mean like how they blew both Garfield games last year? Despite their 3 leading scorers being underclassmen last year, they will be without 2 of them, and possibly all 3 this season. Chemistry could be a problem early on.

If you say so, but not many will agree. Barberton was 16-5 (12-2) last year and returns 65% of its scoring, including the leading returning scorer in the SL in Jacob North (14.4 ppg). Wadsworth was 10-13 (4-10) last year and returns 66% of their scoring. I'm not quite sure how Wadsworth can be favored over Barberton entering the season.

Also, what makes the coach a grade A coach when he has never coached a varsity game in his life?

I'm glad to hear that Johnson is playing. Hopefully he can keep it together for the entire season. He is too talented to not be playing come March. You mentioned Steve Hargrove, so I take it Rodney must be the one at Ellet?
Who is "Pac-man" for Kenmore?
I stated earlier that East could be without their 3 leading scorers from last year. I guess they decided to keep Bickley.
Pacman is Charles Hearn. Junior guard started last year as soph. I think Kenmore will have excellent, deep guard play this year. It all starts next week.

How will they sneak up on people this year?? They have the best or one of the best players in the area in Paulk along with a returning guard play and some decent size.
Kent will be very talented and big but the problem will come down to coaching. They will win alot of games but we will see when it comes tourney time. They return most of their talent and yes Andre Paulk is a DI talent and has some players around him. They also do have size and the 6'10 kid mentioned is more like 6'8 but he doesn't even play the post as he constantly floats around the wing trying to hit jumpers and dribble driving when he should be down low. Ultimately it will eventually come down to coaching and we will see where they go.
On a side note 2 friends of mine very close the the Stow program are saying Stow will be very good this year. They say they have 2 real good shooters and a good post guy, if they develop a point look out as they already have 1 of the best coaches in the state.

Springfield will definitely win the PTC this year... They return everyone from their rebuilding year last year... however, it'll be exciting to see them and Kent battle for the title...
Roosevelt has been the elite team in that league and they have the POY coming back. Springfield will be improved but the big guy must play well to have any sucess.
Does anyone know if any schools (DI-DII) looking at him.

Terrible? Are you sure? The kid will play at the college level and dont be surprised if he gets a scholarship. Please understand, I did not say MAC level but he wont be looking for a college next year.

If you are talking about kid from Kent then yes. Cleveland State I have been told has been on him. I believe he is a definite MAC caliber player: very long, athletic and has a greal feel for the game, good passer and involves his teamates very well. I have no idea how he is in the classroom though. I do know Kent State hasn't been looking at him as of yet but they should.

Anybody that is 6-10 is obviously gonna play sometype of college basketball no matter how good or bad you are because their is always gonna be a college b-ball coach thinking that he can make something out of the height.:hello:
Kent will be very talented and big but the problem will come down to coaching. They will win alot of games but we will see when it comes tourney time. They return most of their talent and yes Andre Paulk is a DI talent and has some players around him. They also do have size and the 6'10 kid mentioned is more like 6'8 but he doesn't even play the post as he constantly floats around the wing trying to hit jumpers and dribble driving when he should be down low. Ultimately it will eventually come down to coaching and we will see where they go.
In all the summer league action he was deffinately playing in the post not floating around like a wing. He did that alot last year because of Hudkins who was 6-9, but he is deffinately closer to 6-10 then 6-8 and his wingspan is pretty close to 7 foot or better

No it's actually the truth. GlenOak had a 6'10" kid a few years ago that was horrible and barely got to play (even when Koufos went down with an injury). He was on the team at Lakeland CC the past 2 seasons.

ya don't forget jon edwards. He was 7 feet tall and so bad he barely played at huson. Then kent state gave him a shot and now he plays in the nba, or did play in it.

I hope this is true. Especially considering his dad is the coach and should know above anyone the importance it is for a kid that size to be in the paint learning to play the post. (Especially considering he wants to play college.) The Hudkins kid was a joke considering his size and athleticism. I would have started Hickle over him who was far superior in all phases.
Too many 6'6 6'7 6'8 kids in high school watch the NBA and believe they need to develop a mid range game to be successful at the next level and beyond but they fail to realize 1.) they probably will never play in the NBA and 2.) They could earn a MAC level scholarship or beyond with that size learning to play down low. Anyone seen KSU the last few years. With the exception of Edwards most of their post guys are 6'4 - 6'8 athletes that defend and rebound.
Hickle started at the 4 for most of the year but ya the mid range stuff you talking about is very true

hudson should be very talented this year. dont be suprised if they win the conference and make a run at states. they have 4 starters returning, as well as every guy off the bench (only 1 senior graduated). they won almost every game this summer, including beating cleveland heights, and barberton to win the championship at West Virginia University. This was without all the football guys, and Josh Jonaitis. They also won the Steubenville tournament this summer. There lineup should be as follows:
Point- Bobby Tyler Sr. 6'2" 170
Shooting Guard- Kevin Meyer Sr. 5'8" 160/ De'Juan Harris Sr. 6'1" 185
Small Forward- Richie Piekarski Jr. 6'2" 185
Power Forward- Colin Geaney Sr. 6'7" 195
Center- Josh Jonaitis Sr. 6'7" 205
Bench- Jake Brandy Jr. 6'2" 170 S.G., Holden Smith Sr. 6'3" 180 P.F., Matt Hollenbeck Sr. 5'8" 155 P.G., Steig Carlson Soph. 5'10" 160 S.G., Sam Gedeon Jr. 5'10" 170 Guard, Zack Barley Jr. 5'10 180 Guard, Gabe Adams Jr. 6'1" 165 Post
Josh Jonaitis is receiving a full ride to division 2 Seton Hill for basketball. He got first team all conference last year. Colin Geaney is getting recruited by a ton of d2 and d3 schools, and got Hon. Mention all-conf. last year. Bobby Tyler also received hon. mention all conf. last year and has committed to UMass to play lacrosse. De'Juan Harris is also getting d2 and d3 interest for basketball after being out all last season with a knee injury. Richie Piekarski is one of the best guards on the team. Kevin Meyer is very athletic and can shoot and is probably one of the best defenders on the team. Jake Brandy is one of the best outside shooters on team. Matt Hollenbeck is one of the best defenders on the team and is a very hard worker. Holden Smith is a scrappy post player who works really hard. Steig Carlson is a great outside shooter. Sam, Zack and Gabe are all good athletes and are 3 of the hardest workers on the team.

Hoban is young but talented. Slack and Barnes are up in the air still. Greg Mcmullen is a stud. he is a monster in the paint and has tremendous leaping ability. The PG question was filled by another stud freshman Sean Robbins who was calm cool and collected, but in their ellet scrimmage he suffered a severe concussion and is out 4 weeks. Seniors Seikel and sokol are dead eyes from the perimeter and will need to step up big if slack and barnes decide not to play. Hoop Hound I got no big predictions this year like i did last year but they should do alright

I agree McMullen will be a stud, but he is nowhere near that level now. Is Robbins going to start? How big is he?

Hoban's frontcourt seems pretty solid so how about the backcourt? Losing Boddie is tough. Who do they have at the guard position that can pick up the SLACK(I made a funny).LOL

RoryStJean posted a freshman by the name of Sean Robbins looks good at PG. Unfortunatley on the IR. Boddie was a great player and he will be missed. TK is a good coach and he'll have it figured out. Don't understand why Barnes and/or Slack won't play their senior year.

I couldn't find it on here, but I did on that other site.
STVM: 2008-2009
Jacob Baker 6-10 270 Jr.
BJ Brophy 6-9 210 Sr.
Daylon Harrison 6-8 215 Sr.
Admir Bektic 6-7 220 Sr.
Jakaar Sampson 6-7 So.
Oliver Hildebrandt 6-5 So.
Ben Bertsch 6-4 245 Sr.
Lorenzo Kongemi 6-3 Fr.
Aaron Carey 6-2 So.
Kris Taylor 6-2 So.
Mike Hammonds 6-2 Sr.
Davonte Beard 6-0 So.
Dom Mitchell 5-11 Jr.
Carrington Glen 5-10 Jr.
Kam Rubin 5-9 Jr.
Ricky Johnson 5-9 So.
Treyvon Crater Fr.
David Blanks Fr.
Off the top of my head, for sure starters:
Johnson?
Brophy?
Harrison?
Even that isn't 100% for sure. Coach Joyce is going to have his hands full sifting thru all this talent and getting the best 5 on the court. Nice problem to have!
The three freshman, Cugini, Blanks and Crater, heard they have tremendous upside potential. Crater has a brother or cousin playing for the Buckeyes?

Slack is conflicted between working out for football next year because he received a full ride to Miami(OH). Theo is really up in the air...he just needs to get motivated to play hopefully it happens soon. McMullen is ready for this level i have watched him play multiple times and he is ready, i witnessed him drop step and dunk over a fellow teamate in practice. he has a very high basketball IQ as well. sean robbins is small but very quick. to pick up the slack there are very few options. adam zsely, a junior, could be the guy.

I'm planning on starting a thread right around opening night for everyone to start submitting rosters, '95. We'll request names as well as heights and grade levels.
I figured once folks start attending games, they'll have programs and roster sheets that will be more accurate than going from memory.

Slack and Barnes are most likely not going to be playing this year. Slack has plans to prepare for Miami (OH) and Barnes suffered from mono the whole football season, in addition to not being motivated to play. Greg is going to be hard to stop in the post, and if some guards step up for the young knights, they could make some noise.

As far as the big kid from Springfield, no one is looking at him.
Thehasbeen95: There really has not been a settled roster for Buchtel yet. Lots of talent to evaluate and they have been playing lots of kids during the scrimmage period. Still a lot of time for Coach to make decisions, Buchtels' first game is not until Dec. 13th.

Pat Robbins (senior) is not playing this year along with three other seniors who would have played a significant role in Hoban's season. My understanding is Pat has had surgery on his hand or wrist recently.
His younger brother is Sean (freshman) who suffered a concussion during a scrimmage a week or so ago.
At this stage of the game Pat is by far and away the better player, but he chose not to play this year for whatever reason.
Although it sounds like it will be some time before Sean gets back to action here's hoping he does and as quickly as he can under the circumstances.:thumb:

Since its only a couple of hours away and I can't wait for it to get started I decided to blow off owrk and put together a Top 20 for the Akron area. As in my real job I will qualify this with the usual I have not seen or may have forgotten a couple of teams. So here goes:
1) St V-M
2) Buchtel
3) Barberton *
4) Hudson *
5) Tallmadge *
6) Hoban *
7) Kent Roosevelt
8) Kenmore *
9) Copley *
10) Springfield *
The asterisk indicates that I have seen that team play or members of that team play in person since June of last year. I'd like some feedback in case I forgot somebody (which I definitely could have in the haste in which I did this).
Here's to a great season for all teams in the Akron area and all over the state of Ohio.
